a bit wishy washy 4 a niter record ! easy to dance to! would that be a waltz or cuz the puppet master is pulling the strings ! bit more of a clenched fist type of soul fan myself !!!

You can choose anything you want but you have to tell us why.

My top sound that I can play on a loop is

"Rare pleasure" - let me down easy

I love the fact that its British, it's a great dancer and yet slightly melancholy, the lyrics are simple yet there is a real story and a feeling of pain and hurt. A disco, dance beat drives me to the wildest dance and I love the horns that make this a rare stand alone track. I can hear it every day and yet still marvel in its composition as a master piece of strings, clip clop percussion and soaring but understated vocals.

It is a far removed from The Snake or do I love you blah de bleedin blah, its never gonna be found in the divies box but I tell ya that I love this record.

Simon, I don't know if your taking the piss, but this tune ticks all the boxes in our house - younger wife who grew up with House - great 70's tune which to my mind was proto house well before First Choice Let No Man Put Asunder (which was also really early - 1980). Of course, the David Morales sample/plagiarisation may have skewed my thought patterns a bit.

But, great though it is, not Northern to my mind (although if this is the sort of Northern played where you go we'd like to come). Mel Britt for me.

Like I said at the beginning, throw the rule book away and add the track that is YOUR Northernsoul Anthem.

I'm now listening to FIRST CHOICE ( LET ME DOWN EASY ) never heard this version and I always thought the 1976 version was the original, kinda bet it was? I would have lost money on it being British? Still you live n learn.

So back to enjoying your Anthems keep em coming and don't forget to let us know what inspires you. Tis good to be in love with all of this wonderful music.

There's one tune that still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up & sends a shiver down my spine, it still beckons me to trip the light fantastic (If only I could) & like a gigantic magnet pulls me to the dancefloor, I remember the first time I'd heard again after some 15 years of being off the scene & that intro that says "THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL,NOW DANCE".

I'm with you on Rare Pleasure what a great record, and better than the First Choice version.

Mel Britt, absolute classic, great to dance to.

Dobie Gray? As an anthem I think you'd find it hard to argue against considering how many people were brought into the scene by this tune.

But my vote so far has to go to Frank Beverley, it's got the lot, if you had to play one tune to someone to show them what Northern Soul sounds like that would be it, it has the beat, the horns, the voice....wonderful.

Before I go can I just throw Johnny Sayles into the mix, another one with everything in there.

Why:

The drum intro picked up by the bass and then the brass comes screaming in - The soft laid back vocal sounds as though hes in tears and is pleading for her to come back.

"It gets so hard - Being without you" you could apply this to anything you loved!

It could remind you of the Northern soul night you went to and you sing this to yourself looking forward to the next night - so i think this should be the National anthem!

I understand that this record was a disco anthem many years before the later re- mixes

I must admit to being a fan of this record

It has been out there in the mix for over 20 years now

A good funk piano riff, and nice Soulful vocals

Really great record. Love it to bits. But not British. They were from New Jersey as far as I know. Cheri was a great, but not particularly prolific, label - I've got most of them. One or two other good bits and pieces- Sherm Nesbary and Hyla Parker to name just two!
