Thought I would have a rummage through a few of them (before my time I may add) and found that the same arguments ie seventies/modern/oldies were being discussed then albeit in paper form. It's just transferred to the net. They seem like a week by week history of the northern scene as it was.Loads of reports on venues etc and even some pics.As Mr Deejay "Frank" has pointed out the adverts for clubs that plugged their sounds are fascinating.I really started buying Echoes and then found I was buying Echoes for one page in the end!!.Discussion on oldies and Pat Brady playing new sounds Chandlers in 1980/81 !!!! Oldies and newies were mixed and theres a good discussion on how new sounds should be introduced. What record is Chris Holmes pointing at??. Im sure Alan Rhodes ended up as a deejay on Radio Tees.I have an interview with him,Chris King and Eddie Holman somewhere.

I loved Echoes, always felt it was superior to Blues and Soul. We used to buy them after school, walk to my mates house and read them in his bedroom and decide where to go next. Great days. smile.gif

It's not really a fair comparison though, as most of the interesting developments as far as the early Northern scene was concerned had already happened by the time Black Echoes started up (in 1976). Blues & Soul was really the only worthwhile mag for Soul music in the early 70s and was avidly read by all.

(The first issue of Black Music was in late 1973).

Wasn't that one page in Echoes (or Black Echoes as it once was) called The Rambler...Checkin' lt Out' by Frank Elson in B&S was brilliant as well! yes.gifthumbsup.gif

Was one page in Black Echoes at the back and I think there was half a page of advertising. All pre internet.I think Blues and Soul only had Franks ramblings in the end as time had definately moved on.

The Chandlers was hardly a new sound in 80/81.

It was 1st played by my fellow DJ in Accrington in 1975 the late Andy Riding R.I.P.

In fact he sold it to Pat in 1976.

It is being quoted as a newie by Pat Brady in the article..........someones oldie is always someones newie.I think Kris Peterson went on to become a newie as well.....after being an oldie

Hi, Dthe, I can remember a Thursday night at the Addison Center Kempston and later at Daly's Club on the main road but thought the Rovers was a Friday? Could be wrong as got married around that time and had to stop enjoying myself!!

coincedentaly, I used to print Black Echoes at Beds County Press and met Neil Rushton there a few times as he worked for the paper. I aslo, used to post a copy to an old mate in the navy, who I met at the Casino, called Andy Bate or Bates and thought it was a great laugh to address it to Master Bates, oh stich my sides back up!! Perhaps thats why I never heard from him again.

Yeah I knew all those faces, are you talking about Chris B*******n ? still see Tony W and Hammie, I think we must know each other. The pilgims was a great bar to end up at before or after a niter do you remember the Lair on the he opp side of the river ? it was a back bar of The Anglers Hotel before it burnt down.

Tilly did'nt go to many soul do's in the my time but all the brothers were/are good blokes. I suppose who you remember depends on when you were going and there are a few overlaps, glad you have good memories of Bedford always been a stong soul following here to the day.

Cheers Andy

Ha!! Trainers!! could only have been Dunlop green flash or those black ones with elasticated sides in those days!! It's more like eastern europe now in Bedford after a spell being twined with Jalabad.

I cant quite place the chippy but I can relate to the type of owner, more like Stavros but without the charm. Come on down as they say, there are a good few still knocking around, theres a bit of a soul night coming up at Stewartby just off J13 M1. Cheers Andy

FRANK BEVERLEY/IF THATS WHAT YOU WANTED

(WHITE SASSY DEMO).

We have that copy of Blues and Soul, also, somewhere among

the many shelves full of "old"soul mags.
