I can't figure out this label, but everything on it appears to be a reissue of something else. For example, I have johnny sayles' chess release on this label. I can't figure out if it was legit or not and who the market was and when they were done.

Thanks for reply. I'm no expert collector or anything it just caughty eye and thought I would throw it out there. There is a spelling mistake on the label. It should read B.Blackburn. (Bill)

It's a bootleg. Even the title is incorrect.

'You Better Believe It' (actual title) came out on South Camp in 1967 and was then leased to MCA's Uni label in '69, coupled with 'Lonely Weekend'.

Another Tony Borders track (the Revue single 'Cheaters Never Win') was bootlegged on Greenlight 101. Some people assume it was the first issue but I think it was a 1970s bootleg for the European market.

sort of related, there is an LA dramatics bootleg on the "Blackjack" label that I've seen sell for $50+ a few times on ebay. I think people tend to see small labels and think "it must be the original label" but this was several years after they were already on volt, totally stupid.

Thanks for the replies. I accept then that it's a boot but it seems

such a lot of effort to go to by the bootlegers for what i think wouldn't give much of a return. Is it made to look little label on purpose? It seems an odd one. Finally, why boot TB and when were they made ? Oh well I haven't discovered a rare piece. I had already spent my fortunes and was waiting for soul source fame! Damn, Another 8 blown.

As Paul says above these were bootlegged for the Dutch deep soul market of the 70s/80s. Looking at the typesetting above I'd say this was manufactured towards the end of the 80s.

It's pertinent to ask why they would choose to bootleg such relatively easily available titles but you must remember that not everyone interested in that music was a 'record collector' in the sense that we would understand it: many just wanted the sound and weren't fussed about owning the original artefact.

Rather than source the original label 45 from the pages of Goldmine or the lists of the likes of John Anderson there was a ready-made market for cheap and plentiful soul oldies in the record shops of Holland. I was amazed at the amount of soul in Amsterdam record shops when I first visited in the 80s. While there were lots of these strange looking bootlegs of the more popular titles there were also a lot of obscure deep soul originals and maybe more interestingly, really convincing counterfeits of rarities like Ralph 'Soul' Jackson on Sounds of Birmingham. I'm convinced the latter was an example of an attempt to defraud the few collectors prepared to pay lots for certain rare originals.

John Ridley kindly sent me this info.

Hello Paul,

I'd love to list the boots but as you say they are so few and far between for deep soul it probably isn't worth the effort.

As to why it was bootlegged in Holland it was for the Surinam community who are/were mad about deep soul. You can read more about this - I think it's really interesting - here

Best wishes,

John
