Can We Have A Wheel Thread? I'd Like To Hear What Was Played

As a raw nighter recruit in 1971 my first venue, approx 9 months after the Wheel shut was (as I've said before) The L'ambassadeur in Bradford.

The sounds played as far as I recollect were virtually all old Wheel sounds, and apart from Ric Tic and Mirwood stuff,

were played predominantly on British copies. The lads who DJ'ed were all old Wheel regulars.

When the Junction/Torch came on stream' I believe there was a major infux

of new kids onto the scene, in fact by the time of the Torch the new kids considerably

outnumbered the old Wheel crew.Plus many Wheel regulars I knew never made the transition to the Torch.

There was also a certain elitism, not by all I hasten to add, regarding those who had been

to the wheel and those who had not, understandable I suppose.

Imported records were not a major part of playlists until 72/73 when Bradford Market, F.L.Moores and a few

others started bringing container loads over from the states.This meant that, since the British record catalogue had been fairly well trawled,

there were few new discoveries between the Wheel closing and the Torch opening apart from what was happening

at the Mecca, but the Mecca wasnt an all nighter.

lso remember that prior to Bradford Market, when record hunting, it was always in

little shops that didnt have an import amongst the thousand in the racks.

So I agree with Malc that most of the records at the Torch were new to most of the kids attending, wherever they had been played

before.

It is a bit of surprise to me though that "Tell Me Its Just A Rumour" was available before the MFP LP and that

"Ghost In My House" was played out prior to it being found on a 45.

I think that people need to realise the Scene in those days was relatively small (less than 500 regulars ?)

compared to the Wigan (best disco in the world) days. Therefore what was played where and by whom is always gonna be

a contentious issue. Small venues that were not nighters and may have done mid week nights could have played

all sorts of stuff, but it was not until it was played at the Wheel that it became a Sound.

On the Imports theme "Babay Reconsider" was a complete anomaly.

Definately a Wheel record and still rare as rocking horse shit.

The scene was bigger than just 500.

The Wheel could hold 600 - 700 and was regularly packed,The Top 20 was also packed,The Cats, The Chateau and about another 20 were also going although not allniters.

When I left the Wheel I would say 30% were played on import.

Imports turned up in lots of unusual places ie Whitchappel Market ,soho and record corner in London, Tib Street,Shudehill,in Manchester etc.

I use to import from 1970 onwards when you had to fill all sorts off forms for sending money out of the country because of the balance of payments.

FL Moore was also importing in 1970 and many private colectors were turning up with all sorts of stuff what was credited as later discoveries.

Baby Reconsider was originally a Chateau record made more famous at the Wheel but their was lots of anomalies.

By 1971 imports I would guess were 50% of the scene at The cats and The mecca

Our old mate Fred Benson used to play a large number of records listed at the Riddings Soul Club- Scunthorpe at the same time the Wheel was on the go. Fred nearly always finished with a combination of the following.

Although I never made the Wheel,the sounds played there has shaped the rest of my life musically and introduced me to hundreds, if not thousands of friends with the same love of this wonderful scene ( and just as many who want to argue about it as well ! )

What is impossible about Tell me It's Just A Rumour? Already said twice that it was available on an LP in 1967.

Who did discover Out on The Floor and where was it played then? Enlighten us.

I thought Brian was a DJ at the Wheel so how can you say he never went?

Sure, time and gear plays tricks on our memories,BUT NEVERTHELESS, I went to the Wheel in 1970 and continued going to almost every all-nighter there was until about 1980, and then went to most if not all, after that.

I was a record dealer at Nighters as soon as i learned enough, from, 1972 onwards any way.

I ran a shop from 1981 to 1995 selling records.

In the 10 years after The Wheel I met hundreds and hundreds of nighter people. I bought and sold 1000's of records. I once wrote to Frank Elson at Blues and Soul cos he was kind enough to mention me a couple of times in that magazine, in fact he once did an article on Leeds Central where I d.j'd at for a few years in the late 70's early 80's In fact he put a photo of myself and Pat Brady in the same article.

When I wrote to him I gave him a top ten of every all-nighter I had ever been to. He never published it and said words to the efffect I was pushing it cos all he had asked for were peoples favourite top ten NOT FROM EVERY PLACE THEY HAD EVER BEEN

Last year I found a draft of that letter, funnily enough. A bit later on I shall write it on here, OK.

So, I am trying to say to you and all that with all my vast experience, in fact VERY VAST EXPERIENCE, I think I would have found out if OUT ON THE FLOOR, or indeed , a lot of these records Brian claims he played before anyone else knew them, were really played at the Wheel, don't you?.

Also Blackpool Mecca started in 1971, not 1970. Look it up on Google if you like.

The Catacombs was unknown to nighter people to at least 1972, maybe 1973.

I'm not doubting your dedication to the scene or your pedigree.

After the Wheel I went to up the junction once and The Torch at least half a dozen times plus quite a bit to the Mecca and a odd visit to Va Vas and The Pendelum.

I use to take stuff for the DJ's to play at The Torch etc.

I was probably the first guy to specialise in rare soul lists 1968 to 1975.

I supplied all the main DJ's and collectors Keith Minshul,Colin Curtis,Ian Levine,Dave Langley,Neil Rushton,Julian Bentley,John Manship,Ian Dewhurst, Soul Sam,Pep and 100's more.

Anybody who was serious about rare soul would know of me I actually disovered a lot more after the Wheel.

By the way I made a mistake on them lists Williams and Watson track we use to play wasn't" one good reason "It was Taking no chances had it cut on to an EMI disc try listening to it you can

I will second that statement . Without the involvement of Brian and his like minded associates , the scene would have not developed as it thankfully did .

As for " keeping the faith " , someone asked me recently why I was still " involved " and was as interested in the scene and records ( 2011 will be my 46th year of being " involved " ) , and my response was simple - it is second nature to me , and something I do not give a thought to , and which will hopefully continue to be so until I ( Harlem ) Shuffle off this mortal coil .

Hi Steve,

Apart from The Carrolls because we played the Peaches and Herb version were all played.

I tried to list tracks that were allniter tracks not put on the previously listed CD tracks.

I could go on and on and list stuff that was played but was also played in a lot of other clubs in Manchester etc.

We did play stuff on new release or import untill it spread to the rest of the clubs then dropped it.

I could go on listing lots more like DANNY WHITE AMD DONALD HEIGHT etc but I think I've listed enough.

Their's a lot of stuff we had but didn't play either because of the tempo or quality that became biig sounds later.

I don't know what your'e on but I'd go and get it checked out.

You obviously didn't go to the Wheel unless you went to the last one with ten thousand others( I wasn't there then)

I don't know where to start but lets have a go.

I have made one mistake on the list Barbara Lyn- Take your love and run THE REST 100% got played plus lots more.

I didn't mention Sandi Sheldon because it on the CD's and if you read the post I said I would avoid them already listed.

All but 1 0r 2 I played personally.

Out on the floor was played at the Cats, Chateau and the Wheel from 69 onwards.

Domino played as a new release,Queen of fools, I hurt on the other side (until I left),Darkest Days,Unsatisfied,Love reputation,Feels Good,your'e loosing me,Good things come to those who wait, In orbit,Sufferin' City and You ought to be in heaven were all big tunes at the Wheel.

A lot of the others you dispute Lady love, heartbeat, picture me gone,Invitation and few more were clasic tunes played from re lease and less so later on.

Robertr Banks, Fireman and The Kelly brothers I played quite a bit were never that big.

This is the thanks I get, The drifter and few more I played the last half hour.

Williams and Watson and Isley Brothers(I'm pretty sure) Phil Saxe played of the album (we didn't know at that time is was out on OKEH) I had left by then September 1970

The Adlibs Dave Godin brought down.

All but The Adlibs,Isley Brothers Joy lovejoy, please let me in and Darkest Days I had in my collection when I left so a lot didn't get played afterwards from September 1970 onwards.

I also had just got Emanuel Laskey and Moses Smith from a deal I done in May but didn't get until September so they got played on my last night.

Regarding CD's I don't recolect Bobby Paris or The Vibrations being played.

THE PEOPLE WHO TOLD YOU THEY DISCOVERED WHATEVER ARE FULL OF SHIT.

NO REARANGING HERITAGE OR DODGY 40 YEAR OLD MEMORIES

I was given 2 C120 tapes by a guy called Philip Nowland, who I think was a policeman, but was a Wheel regular. He had a fantastic collection and most of what Brian lists were on these 2 tapes, recorded in September 1970 and given to me then.

I still have the tape listings and will scan them when I get back to work. I am slightly surprised at some of the records that Swish doubts. They are commonly known to be not only Wheel records, but played at most Sunday night venues in East Lancs from 68/69 onwards.

I'm not getting involved in this discussion other than to say two things.

1. I totally agree with Brian Phillips and his recollections - let's face it, if he doesn't know, who does?

2. Spent one night there in the company of 'Docker' and Les Cokell - they spent 8 hours discussing soul music and I think I'd heard of about 5 of the records mentioned by them!!!!! It was after this 'memorable' event that I decided to start collecting seriously and got my first DJing job at Lord Jim's in Huddersfield.

Those were the days.

I was given 2 C120 tapes by a guy called Philip Nowland, who I think was a policeman, but was a Wheel regular. He had a fantastic collection and most of what Brian lists were on these 2 tapes, recorded in September 1970 and given to me then.

I still have the tape listings and will scan them when I get back to work. I am slightly surprised at some of the records that Swish doubts. They are commonly known to be not only Wheel records, but played at most Sunday night venues in East Lancs from 68/69 onwards.

Can I just mention a couple that really pull chain and are from early days that I think kind of got under my skin and enticed me to sample some R&B type soul. I still love Staxy soul today and I do believe my R&B leanings are as a result of tunes like this .

I had "No stranger to love" at the time but I never played it or I never heard anybody else play it at the Wheel.

Loads of the stuff Brian lists was on them, and I can confirm Tell Me Its Just A Rumour was on as was loads of the Rict Tic stuff. I also bought Queen of Fools off the policeman before I had ever heard it played out.

I know a few Wheel lads to this day and I have never been aware of a live tape from the Wheel. I would be really interested in one of those. The earliest tape I have is one I did down the Pendelum. Mark F and Pete S put it onto CD for me along with a load of Wigan and Blackpool Mecca ones.
