I'm also amazed that a lot of these tunes that I thought were from the Cats/Torch & Mecca were in fact Wheel plays. Must have been fantastic. By 67/68 a lot of Manchester drinking clubs were dominated by the latest soul releases and some re-releases on stax,atlantic,motown,direction,and a smattering of stateside.So a lot of this stuff got played at early sessions less so at the allniters.

OK I didn't go to the Wheel but I did go to the Moon in Duckinfield, Birdcage in Ashton and Poco Poco in Stockport from '69 to '71. The clientelle was made up of a lot of Wheel lads and I recognise loads of those records from then. I can definitely state that I bought Gloria Jones for £1 in 1970 in Ralph's Records in Stockport off "Scotch Joe" and "Little Louis" who assured me it was a Wheel sound and if you'd have seen them you wouldn't have begged to differ! At the same time I bought "Here she comes" CP DJ also as a Wheel sound from them and ended up swapping it for "Darrell Banks "Angel baby" with Al Burkehead. Im assuming Brian when he says Tib St means that little shop with other outlets in Oldham and Ashton [Jim [Dobbs?] was his name I think and his wife was usually behind the counter]. When I worked in Manchester from Sept '71 It always had oddball imports but I did pop in once or twice prior to that. Dave Withers, McCadden and me got in his "warehouse" at the back of the shop in Ashton that John Hillel took over. Can't remember exact date but Carolines was on then in Manchester. Full of imports and we got 40+ Lenny Curtis plus others. So I'd say Tib St was a source for Northern from quite early on. Francis T could probably add info too. ROD

When folks say things that are impossible to be true, especially folks I have never heard of, like TELL ME IT IS JUST A RUMOUR was played when it didn't even exist well I get very skeptcal. No one in the world could have heard that before and forgotten they had ever heard it Coupled with all the years and all the hundreds of people I knew amd no one atall has ever said it was played at the Wheel except this guy! DO ME A FAVOUR! The guy who discovered it was a staunch Wheel goer anyway. He would have hardly brought a massive sound like that into a new venue and said "Wait till you hear this", if it was already known, now would he? .

By 67/68 a lot of Manchester drinking clubs were dominated by the latest soul releases and some re-releases on stax,atlantic,motown,direction,and a smattering of stateside.So a lot of this stuff got played at early sessions less so at the allniters. Hi Brian, Our old mate Fred Benson used to play a large number of records listed at the Riddings Soul Club- Scunthorpe at the same time the Wheel was on the go. Fred nearly always finished with a combination of the following. Also, Just a Rumour' may well be on a 67' LP Bbut it wasnt played until early 70's..an old mate of mine who was a Wheel regular long before me, always loved 'Why When Love Is Gone' and when he heard Rumour on returning to the scene a few years back couldnt believe it. He'd never heard of it til then..and he was an Isleys fan. No, not at the Wheel. . Me and Swish started going to nighters at exactly the same time and between us we might still have a few brain cells working if not all.. Joy Lovejoy, no way at the Wheel..first played at Hernies..loads more examples..I think as myself and Swish have recently been discussing, there are one or two people re-arranging their heritage on here. A local record shop had loads of British Motown and Soul albums for sale in the late sixties. I purchased many including Motown Memories 1 and 2, Edwin Starr,Mitch Ryder, Impressions, Shirley Ellis, Jay & The Techniques, Stevie Wonder, Collections of Motown Big Hits etc. I Was not really into sending off for stuff in them days apart from the odd one. Most of these had at least one track that was played at the local Soul Club which played many of the sounds Brian listed, and I used to play uptempo tracks off these albums to like minded mates at the local youth club.I was expanding my knowledge ( and theirs ) of the music we were into, and hence that was why I was aware of You Ought To Be In Heaven and Ghost In My House. and stated that others may have played these in other surroundings at the that time. I think the first time I heard Tell Me It's Just A Rumour was at the Compass Club around 1973 but dare say was aired earlier, and got to admit I had not heard a number of Brian's list until around the Torch days, but without going to the Wheel, I can only go with what Brian says. My heritage came from older mates letting me play their Soul stuff at the youth club 67/8, buying my own records and going with my mates to soul nights in Scunthorpe, then to the Attic at Doncaster. Do not want to re-arrange it, in the words of Chris Clark- Just want to go back there again. Steve

But, I dont think it was played out until much later.. played in quite a few places around the Birmingham area as was a lot of stuff generally regarded as being first played at the Wheel, the UK is quite a big place and it cant possibly be true. And to say stuff was never played at this and that venue is bo***** because how can any one possibly say they went to every occasion said venue was on and being in there from start to finish and actually remember what was played and not played. bloody impossible.

Swish met Brian - without him knowing it - at our get together in October , for they were both in a group of gentlemen nattering away downstairs at The Ryan Hall . Malc

Quite suprised really a lot of stuff I thought were Torch or Casino discoveries turn up , must have been brilliant hearing them for the first time . 1

I had the Morris Chestnut BEFORE it got big, in fact I used to lend it John Vincent to play. I had it pressed here in Sheffield with Linda Jones on b side and sold about 10 copies at Wigan one night.... Me and my best buddy Mopsey turned up at your house on route from VA-Va's one saturday too to buy some. Malc As a raw nighter recruit in 1971 my first venue, approx 9 months after the Wheel shut was (as I've said before) The L'ambassadeur in Bradford. The sounds played as far as I recollect were virtually all old Wheel sounds, and apart from Ric Tic and Mirwood stuff, were played predominantly on British copies. The lads who DJ'ed were all old Wheel regulars. When the Junction/Torch came on stream' I believe there was a major infux of new kids onto the scene, in fact by the time of the Torch the new kids considerably outnumbered the old Wheel crew.Plus many Wheel regulars I knew never made the transition to the Torch. There was also a certain elitism, not by all I hasten to add, regarding those who had been to the wheel and those who had not, understandable I suppose. Imported records were not a major part of playlists until 72/73 when Bradford Market, F.L.Moores and a few others started bringing container loads over from the states.This meant that, since the British record catalogue had been fairly well trawled, there were few new discoveries between the Wheel closing and the Torch opening apart from what was happening at the Mecca, but the Mecca wasnt an all nighter. I also remember that prior to Bradford Market, when record hunting, it was always in little shops that didnt have an import amongst the thousand in the racks. So I agree with Malc that most of the records at the Torch were new to most of the kids attending, wherever they had been played before. It is a bit of surprise to me though that "Tell Me Its Just A Rumour" was available before the MFP LP and that "Ghost In My House" was played out prior to it being found on a 45. I think that people need to realise the Scene in those days was relatively small (less than 500 regulars ?) compared to the Wigan (best disco in the world) days. Therefore what was played where and by whom is always gonna be a contentious issue. Small venues that were not nighters and may have done mid week nights could have played all sorts of stuff, but it was not until it was played at the Wheel that it became a Sound. On the Imports theme "Babay Reconsider" was a complete anomaly. Definately a Wheel record and still rare as rocking horse shit. Kegsy

You obviously didn't go to the Wheel unless you went to the last one with ten thousand others( I wasn't there then) I don't know where to start but lets have a go. I have made one mistake on the list Barbara Lyn- Take your love and run THE REST 100% got played plus lots more. I didn't mention Sandi Sheldon because it on the CD's and if you read the post I said I would avoid them already listed. All but 1 0r 2 I played personally. Out on the floor was played at the Cats, Chateau and the Wheel from 69 onwards. Domino played as a new release,Queen of fools, I hurt on the other side (until I left),Darkest Days,Unsatisfied,Love reputation,Feels Good,your'e loosing me,Good things come to those who wait, In orbit,Sufferin' City and You ought to be in heaven were all big tunes at the Wheel. A lot of the others you dispute Lady love, heartbeat, picture me gone,Invitation and few more were clasic tunes played from re lease and less so later on. Robertr Banks, Fireman and The Kelly brothers I played quite a bit were never that big. This is the thanks I get, The drifter and few more I played the last half hour. Williams and Watson and Isley Brothers(I'm pretty sure) Phil Saxe played of the album (we didn't know at that time is was out on OKEH) I had left by then September 1970 The Adlibs Dave Godin brought down. All but The Adlibs,Isley Brothers Joy lovejoy, please let me in and Darkest Days I had in my collection when I left so a lot didn't get played afterwards from September 1970 onwards. I also had just got Emanuel Laskey and Moses Smith from a deal I done in May but didn't get until September so they got played on my last night. Regarding CD's I don't recolect Bobby Paris or The Vibrations being played. THE PEOPLE WHO TOLD YOU THEY DISCOVERED WHATEVER ARE FULL OF SHIT.
