Never mind that, stop in and write me a list of 50 or so super obscure British things I should be looking for, I thought I knew pretty much everything til you posted those scans up.

p.s. I said I thought I had that "Circus" record on Parlophone, found it, and it's not that bad really!

I'm on to it Pete.Got my camera posed.Check out the collecting British thread soon.thumbsup.gif

I just know that at the bottom of this pint glass full of neat vodka there is written a flyer with the full and comprehensive meaning of the word "crossover" on it :-] . But seriously it must be really confusing for young people reading flyers/advertisments . Take r n b . Does that mean soulish r n b , funkyish r n b, heavy r n b soul , modern r n b or hip hop type r n b or rock n roll merry clayton -shelter- type thingy r n b ,mod type r n b , doowoppy type r n b ect ect . Im confused and im in my 40s . How must people a lot younger feel. Its difficult And is "london soul" yet another sub genre ? . Personally the words "70s" (given the same font and space as "60s") on a flyer makes me consider attending an event along with "northern soul" or "rare soul" . And "uptempo" definatly

In answer to wiggyflats original question theres a plethora of nights dedicated to "traditional Northern Soul" as have been mentioned already by other members, Lifeline is one of the best nighters ive ever had the pleasure to go to,to me that was traditional "Northern",yet DJs played stuff i'd never heard before which was fookin brilliant!!

Rugby is my favourite for several reasons, NCS puts on brilliant events also, and i've some fantastic nights at Middleton.

My point is,you lot over there are so fookin spoilt for choice and it has'nt once crossed your minds how lucky you all are!

You are literally a car or train journey away from some top events and all people do is moan and cry, that they dont like this played and they dont like that played ffs enjoy the fookin time we have left with it.

Ever since I was a spotty 14 year old getting into this wonderful music for the first time,

theres been bitching and in fighting and im sick to death of hearing about it,

Lets enjoy the music, after all look how much choice we have now compared to all those years ago!!!

Sorry if i ranted on......... But we will all be a long time dead......... Kevthumbsup.gif

I understand the frustration.

My preference is for music that was released between February and October 1965, on labels that contain two vowels or less, eg Sugar Pie Desanto - 'Here you come running' on Checker, whereas Dontells - 'In your Heart' would have to be excluded because even though the date is correct, there are three vowels in Vee Jay. On the plus side Motown has two vowels with plenty of releases in the time period, but I'm not a great fan of Motown and couldn't listen to a whole night of it. Sometimes I'm lucky and as many as six records that suit my criteria have been played in a single night. Across the board venues usually do the business more than others.

Your wrong to say "its never crossed your minds" kevnewry. I for one have said over and over again on this site how "lucky" i feel to be from this time and place. I wish i had a massive house or a barn and you could ALL come and stop with me . Something else iv also said before . Its not our fault your from/live were you do anymore than its our fault that we come from here . Im proud of were i come from and i hope i dont come across as bragging about it but im damned if i ever start feeling guilty about it . The thread isnt about choice its about genres . With respect. Its debate . Its a forum.

Geography sarahleen is not the issue, but i'm sure you understand the sentiment behind it, i lived in England for many years, guilt is also not the issue and i'm more aware than most, it's a debate and a forum, and genres and choice, is by association within the context of "SOUL music very much the issue, i was merley highlighting it, i do apologise if you felt offendedthumbsup.gif

And kev . At one time i went into a supermarket and i had 3 choices of yoghurt it was hard to decide . These days you go in a supermarket and theres dozens. With mad names and different labels. I miss the old days when you knew what you were getting and im sure it tasted better. Maybe theres just too much soul choice. Yes the music is better than ever i agree but it needs young people and its confusing for them (us all really) and thats why people debate it because they care about the scenes future .The music is awesome yes but the "scene" is confusing . Its splintered .

Sarah, you've just without probably realising it agreed with my post, WE all care and yes, of course it's confusing these days, but only if you let it.

The scene became splintered as early as the mecca/wigan days it's nothing new, people sometimes forget that "Northern" was a little baby once, and has now grown into a monster, the scene has developed and grown so much that sometimes we forget "where we started"

So much is now played at venues that is not "Northern Soul" but is accepted in the wider umbrella that enfolds the general Rare/Northern scene.

It's all a matter of what you like or dislike, the point I was trying to make was there is so much choice now unlike years ago, when you knew what you were gonna get at an alnighter, just think these days it's far more exciting to expect the unexpectedwink.gif

Reg iv tried to avoid mentioning events because it seems people sometimes get mistaken for nepotism on here and often it probably is .I can honestly i feel lucky to have been at EVERY event iv been to . I dont know any big name djs or promoters . The stand out niters iv been to in the last couple of years have been burnley, winsford, wilton ,radcliffe , the awesome 100 club anniversary and the awesome stafford reunion . But there are a few (esp in the midlands ) that i havnt been to yet . As for nights yes driving beat leeds and bradford east bowling are both fantastic and uptempo . And id like to mention brighouse ritz and keighley okeh. But there are loads i havnt been to or probably have slipped my mind. They have all been good . Its hard cos iv probably missed some out . I also went to rimini for the saturday and the music was great (but it went a bit jazz funk in the last hour BUT Please dont tell anyone i said that , please reg lol ) Like kev said im tho i am lucky were i live

Yes kev. When i first got back into 2 years ago the r n b and lack of 70s was a big shock . The first time i went to burnley ( very uptempo funky r n b soul that wasnt doowoppy or very early 60s in general) it blew my head off. Didnt have clue what any of it was though they did play some great classics like -hold on- . Burnley stood out because it 60s funk rn b soul HEAVY . and iv always loved funk . If i had to pick a niter that came closest to the old northern alniters in the very early 80s i went to (wigan rotherham peterboro stafford morcambe yate ) then it would have to be the 100 club anni and stafford reunion . They played rare and classic they played well across two decades and they played uptempo . One of the stafford sets was a classic "newie " set . Either before or after keb darges (also great) the nemies set i heard was particully exceptional and reminscent

Where abouts are you thinking wiggy?

Or are you not bothered about travelling?

Wherever Wiggy is going i would like to follow him.

And i dont even drive, but will go anywhere somehow.

I have also found the same.

No Offence to oldies people or any other Genre.

just looking for something slightly different to everything else.

Following on from Webby's highly charged debate re R&B.I've looked at the flyer gallery and I've noticed Quality Soul, Rare Soul, Northern Soul,Popcorn, Latin etc etc.I did a night in London recently where it was advertised as Northern Soul ie uptempo sixties/seventies dance music. Not necessarily oldies. Can anyone point me in the direction of similar nights around the UK.I don't want this to get into a slanging match re oldies....vests/bags/bootlegs CD's versus Rare soul....midtempo,popcorn, r&b,doo wop etc.I do go to rare soul nights and do enjoy them for what they are but I would like to get out to more Northern Soul Nights around the UK that play originals and lots of new sounds in a similar style and don't playlist r&b,ska, popcorn etc as there are at least 3 or 4 of these type of gigs I visit in London.

the soulboyspromo nights in edinburgh They are not afraid to say northern soul .2 rooms 1 northern 1 more modern stuff .These boys have been into northern since the beginning of dawn but it is always fresh .

I should have added, something different with an uptempo beat, where i can dance my legs off

wich will probaly be in all of 10 minutes at my age.
