Following on from Webby's highly charged debate re R&B.I've looked at the flyer gallery and I've noticed Quality Soul, Rare Soul, Northern Soul,Popcorn, Latin etc etc.I did a night in London recently where it was advertised as Northern Soul ie uptempo sixties/seventies dance music. Not necessarily oldies. Can anyone point me in the direction of similar nights around the UK.I don't want this to get into a slanging match re oldies....vests/bags/bootlegs CD's versus Rare soul....midtempo,popcorn, r&b,doo wop etc.I do go to rare soul nights and do enjoy them for what they are but I would like to get out to more Northern Soul Nights around the UK that play originals and lots of new sounds in a similar style and don't playlist r&b,ska, popcorn etc as there are at least 3 or 4 of these type of gigs I visit in London.

Uptempo late sixties soul and seventies stuff. No R&B,Latin, jazz, mid tempo, popcorn.I usually get a clue if its advertised as Rare Soul then I expect Latin, R&b,mid tempo etc and if it's Northern soul I would expect the late sixties uptempo stuff with seventies but it does get confusing.

Its all that shi* you keep buying....thumbsup.gif

I'm with Vince on this... Bournemouth tomorrow night... is always across the board..

nothing set in stone... just where the dancers want it to go...thumbsup.gif

mmm. Stoke Kings Hall?

Yeah done Stoke but they are mostly oldies events. Is there anywhere similar who programme new stuff n a similar style amongst the oldies.

Take that back about bournemouth... they like to play across the board for everyone...

like most do's I suppose....wink.gif

See I got stuck when you said just northern and all uptempo. Most the nights I know like that do play a bit of other stuff.

Lowton possibly? They have a oldies/cross the board room plus a separate rarer room?

Went to Marton Manor last xmas in Middlesbrough. This was my type of night.Pure uptempo northern and quality seventies all night. There must be other places.

What is across the board.......does it mean everything inc r&b,popcorn latin etc though and does the rarer room mean midtempo.I already visit these style of venues if thats what across the board/rare room means. Are there any venues that nail their music to the mast ie NORTHERN SOUL where you can go and know what you are getting ie uptempo late sixties and seventies. As I said Marton Manor did it for me I wonder if there are other places with the same music policy.

Where abouts are you thinking wiggy?

Or are you not bothered about travelling?

Not bothered about travelling....and would prefer niters but dont want to get somewhere where I've been told its Northern Soul and find I'm at a rare soul gig which I could have had in London.....ie glad someone put me straight about Bournemouth that they do programme pocorn/r&b etc.I want a full on night of uptempo sixties/seventies.

Come on Wiggyflat this thread is like a red rag to a bull!

When you say "Traditional Northernsoul" do you mean "Wigan Casino Revival" stuff? I think you have to be a little bit more specific than giving such a broad brush description because the term "Traditional" will be open to interpretations that are always going to cause heated debate; I kinda suspect you know this already?

If you want traditional Northernsoul that is served up as quality and danced and enjoyed by some top people in a magnificent setting then Blackpool at the end of the year for a weekender or Stoke. I love the spectacle and enjoy every minute of the dos with great friends and an atmosphere that's hard to beat.

There are loads of people who dress in the classic casino style and don't take them selves too serious, there are loads of people who travel vast distances for Stoke and to be honest if you are really looking for traditional Northernsoul then this is the place to be.

Most Allnighters up and down the country offer their own slant on rare soul and if you are looking for traditional Northernsoul then keep away from the Allnighter Scene coz it's a long way from the Snake or the Lambrini.

wink.gifI can't believe I'm falling for this wind up!

Dont worry about Mischief thats actually a compliment from him laugh.gif

Solid Hit Soul in London is a must and to be honest there aint many venues that like to keep it mainly uptempo all night, SAYING THAT, Groovesville in Bedford, Move On in the midlands and many more to name too, but its also about knowing your djs i guess and you obviously know these anyway, looking back through Lookbacks and seeing playlists and of course asking on here you should get many good response and ideas,

ps, Mischief plays wishy washy disco drollful tunes so avoid him like the plague laugh.giflaugh.gif

Kent Soul Club tommorrow night. And I am the promoter before you ask.wink.gif

We do play across the board, but the guests we've got tommorrow will suit your tastes I reckon, with Steve Clegg being very into his crossover/early modern dancers. And Dave KD loves his female lead vocal, grittier than motown sounds.

Bunny plays out and out stompers, and so do I , though I am leaning a bit more towards RnB, but nothing too rock'n'rollie, if you know what I mean.

I think everyones take on what traditional Northern Soul is will be different - to me I think it would be oldies.

If you do come, introduce yourself to me and tell me what you think, if not enjoy wherever you gothumbsup.gif

Yes a "full on night of uptempo 60s AND 70s " and i agree NORTHERN SOUL is not just about the classic oldies (a lie told by some frankly ) . Im confused too . Im confused by all the labels and rooms. Why isnt it called OLDIES (in general any 60s, classic or not !) and NEWIES (in general any 70s). Great thread wiggy and im sure there a few are other people as baffled as me by the flyers

Posted

Is this topic a p*ss take?

The very first flyer although gives no music policy there is a clue when they say Northern Soul, two of the next four say Northern Soul & Motown or Soul and Motown nights and surely everyone has a good idea what DJ plays what.

We also had a rather large discussion on across the board too!

Surely 'programming new stuff' is hardly hand in glove with 'Traditional northern' or am I way off base

Confused

And why when anyone asks a simple question are they accused of causing trouble . And why is the thread then closed down . Why does it feel like NORTHERN SOUL is a dirty word these days. Im not trying to cause trouble Im asking this on the verge of tears here .

I do go to Solid Hit Soul...a great night but they play across the board r&b,midtempo and a bit of latin etc.Theres about 3 of these gigs in London that are alike.I like them but I want late sixties uptempo and seventies..not an across the board mix.

If its traditional NORTHERN as in classic oldies yes.gif youv`e no chance down in the smoke no.gifno.gif

I beg to differ ma'am, 100 Club Xmas party and the Crossfire dos, though Wiggy probably didn't enjoy the recent one which was London Oldies.

It depends when you grew up and got into it, my first nights included records like Tony Clarke The Entertainer, The Platters Washed Ashore and an obscure Jimmy Radcliffe release called Long After Tonight Is All Over; so no one's gonna tell me that a sublime mid tempo Detroit track like Tobi Lark's Lots Of Heart that I'll play on Saturday at the 100 Club ain't Northern.

I mean newly discovered stuff in a similar style ie.......uptempo danceable stuff.I don't want to just hear the obvious sounds all night either.

no one has accused anyone of causing trouble, or if they did I didn't see that bit, I simply asked if the topic was a genuine request because to me it comes across as a bit of a p*ss take. The topic starter knows his stuff from previous discussions so to ask this question is a little puzzling. He also asked what is crossover when we've just had world war 3 over the very same question in another topic. I also went and looked at the flyer gallery and 3 of the first 5 said Northern Soul.

The majority of the venues in the north are oldies driven! Especially the midlands and north west.

So get thee sen a hanky and dry your eyes, why what is in this topic would make anyone shed tears is beyond me

in that case i think your never gonna find what you want if SHS dont do it for you, there aint a venue ive been to the last few years that dont play a bit of this and that and the one that did in my opinion get as close to what your after was SHS, if you do find this event then please let me know cos what your looking for is right up my street to i think thumbsup.gif

Burnley would of been a suggestion but thats finished now

Adey had no problem with London oldies...it said London oldies on the tin so I knew what I was getting. If I didn't like it I wouldn't pay my £15 and go.I like Solid Hit Soul and Boogaloo as well but I just want to go to some venues where the majority of the music is uptempo sixties and seventies and I don't mean played on CD/The Top 500.As I have said I love R&B,Jazz,Punk all different forms of music but I went to Marton Manor in the north east and wondered if there were similar nights all over the UK.

maybe this is your calling do the do that you want... if its what you want i'm sure others will want it as well...

and attend it and support it...

promote it as an uptempo night.... see what happens..

most of us probably got in to "northern" because of uptempo stuff any way..

Yes ha! We have page after page of arguements and we STILL dont know what "crossover" is . You tell me . Is it modern , is it circa 1970s, is it jazz funk is it a cross over of genres . Lord we even debate over wether its spelt xover or not . Wiggy asked a simple question (like webby did) . And both have been accused of a having a hidden agenda . Excuse me if i get emotional while NORTHERN SOUL gets kicked to death people !

wiggy, does the 100 Club not do it for you then huh.gif

I like the 100 Club.Started going in 86 but it was unique at the time playing rare soul,r&b,early mod sounds, mid tempo and out and out northern. The 100 Club type of night seems to have spawned loads of other similar sort of nights up and down the country but the 100 Club is still a few steps in front of the game.As I said there are about 2 or 3 in London at the moment similar that are great places but I just want a change. A place that is not necessarily only oldies either but who programme uptempo sixties and seventies.I'm not trying to be controversial...if I was I would be saying that is crap that is good.As I have said I was at Marton Manor up in the Boro at xmas and the music played was exactly up my street.I don't want this thread to get into a slanging match either.

I booked Roger Stuart who I thought was across the board (whatever it means) but he ended up playing a full set of traditional Northern Soul.I knew where I was with Ian Dewhirst(He played loads of seventies/cleethorpes/Mecca sounds).I played uptempo sixties and seventies.Think I will advertise the next as uptempo northern soul and seventies and leave it at that. What do you call records in the same style that are not oldies though?? and will people think its oldies/baggies and the top 500 and CD's.It used to be so simple...
