Jaco
There's a Black Abbotts' single on Roulette from 1972 -"How about me/Everybody needs a little something" Could this have something to do with these Black Abbotts who are clearly not "our" Black Abbotts Link to comment Social source share

Guest Dave Turner
Black Abbots "The Painter" was deffo played out. I certainly remember it around 1974ish and have a feeling I had it at one time Brady has one on at £75 and there's a circa 1 min sound clip if anyone wants to take a listen https://www..co.uk/ Seeing the label now I remember I did have one, got it off the market I reckon. Personally I would not give 75P ...... Is it classed as Club Soul or Northern Dave ? Malc Burton Link to comment Social source share
Guest TONY ROUNCE
I'm a great fan of "Burnley Is Babylon" by Russ Abbot (as Wilf Bumworthy), it's a next cut to Marcia Griffiths' rocksteady classic "Feel Like Jumping" believe it or not... Link to comment Social source share

paultp
That's not it Paul, Lord knows what that one is, but "The Painter" is more uptempo than that and although I personally can't stand it, you'd never know who it was in a month of sundays and it's much better than the one on that video. So the lister of the acetate in my original post is absolutely correct and I was laughing for no good reason I listened to the sound clip on PB's site and it doesn't sound like Russ and his mates, but if it was a UK release I doubt they would have chosen/been able to use the same name as a well known band. Maybe it was one of the other band members doing the vocals as they probably started out as a serious band and then realised they could make more money clowning about. So I'm sticking with my story that Russ Abbot got plays. Edit: I've just checked wikipedia and evidently Russ Abbot formed the Black Abbots in 1977 so it probably was a different band if "The Painter" got plays in 1974. (Why am i researching The Black Abbots FFS!) Gutted! That all said it is still a sh*te tune! .... and this is a souless thread which is probably teetering on the brink of freebasing Edited April 16, 2010 by paultp Link to comment Social source share

Guest
Records like "The Painter" most certainly should! We had better be wary for slagging off " The Painter " , as it may be the Bees Bollocks / Dog's Knees to someone ..... Malc Burton Link to comment Social source share
paultp
This is now becoming an obsession! I've just listened to both tracks (the vid I posted and PB's sound clip) and the lead singers sound the same. Should I edit wikipedia? Edit: Here's a [link to a biography of The Black Abbots] which states they started in 1969 and were initially a serious band. So, one and the same band - I rest my case Edited April 16, 2010 by paultp Link to comment Social source share
