Jaco Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 There's a Black Abbotts' single on Roulette from 1972 -"How about me/Everybody needs a little something" Could this have something to do with these Black Abbotts who are clearly not "our" Black Abbotts

Agentsmith Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 wasnt this a played record in the early 70,s, and isnt it russ and his mates, came out on uk i seem to remember absolutely right played at blackpool mecca, covered up as eddie foster i think and i also think it came out on the obscure evolution record label which also issued the fashions "i o u" and a track by otis redding but cant remember the title of that one....and i'll be entirely honest,....i cant recall ever hearing the record but always remember the B & S adverts carrying this track. wouldnt know its value and certainly as its not been played for literally 20 years or more in any djs set. rob.h

Pete S Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Is this it? I can't believe The Black Abbots got played !!! Everyone should be ashamed Edit: I notice Mike Hughes name is on the credits That's not it Paul, Lord knows what that one is, but "The Painter" is more uptempo than that and although I personally can't stand it, you'd never know who it was in a month of sundays and it's much better than the one on that video.
Guest Dave Turner Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) Black Abbots "The Painter" was deffo played out. I certainly remember it around 1974ish and have a feeling I had it at one time Brady has one on at £75 and there's a circa 1 min sound clip if anyone wants to take a listen https://www..co.uk/ Seeing the label now I remember I did have one, got it off the market I reckon. Edited April 16, 2010 by Dave Turner
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I'll let this go for the right price... It's always disappointed me that this was not a cover of Joy Division's "Atmosphere"... ...or vice versa.

Rob That wil have been Laughing Kenny's ( AKA Kenny's Records ) . I can remember him once being in court for breaking into a smile ...... Damn you Rounce , I now have a mental picure of Russ Abbott mincing about and singing the JD song , which will no doubt stay with me for most of the day Malc Burton Edited April 16, 2010 by Malc Burton

Guest Dave Turner Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 £75, I'd ask £25 for it! Not saying that's a good price Pete, just saying that's what Brady has it listed for.
Guest Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Not saying that's a good price Pete, just saying that's what Brady has it listed for. If Patrick can get £75 for it , good luck to him . Personally I would not give 75P ...... Is it classed as Club Soul or Northern Dave ? Malc Burton
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 I'm a great fan of "Burnley Is Babylon" by Russ Abbot (as Wilf Bumworthy), it's a next cut to Marcia Griffiths' rocksteady classic "Feel Like Jumping" believe it or not...
Guest Dave Turner Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 If Patrick can get £75 for it , good luck to him . Personally I would not give 75P ...... Is it classed as Club Soul or Northern Dave ? Malc Burton I'd deffo give 75p for it and then flog it to Pete for a fiver -- everyone a winner Fooked if I know Malc, thought you were the expert

Malc Burton

Malc Burton I was being sarky too mate. Played after the term "Northern Soul" was coined then deffo "Northern" -- not so sure about the "Soul" bit though
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Is it classed as Club Soul or Northern Dave ? Malc Burton This is definitely 'Northern Dave', Malc. Couldn't really mistake it for anything else!
Guest Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 This is definitely 'Northern Dave', Malc. Couldn't really mistake it for anything else! Like it Tony , like it . From now on , records should be classed as " Northern Dave " ones Malc Burton
paultp Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) That's not it Paul, Lord knows what that one is, but "The Painter" is more uptempo than that and although I personally can't stand it, you'd never know who it was in a month of sundays and it's much better than the one on that video. So the lister of the acetate in my original post is absolutely correct and I was laughing for no good reason I listened to the sound clip on PB's site and it doesn't sound like Russ and his mates, but if it was a UK release I doubt they would have chosen/been able to use the same name as a well known band. Maybe it was one of the other band members doing the vocals as they probably started out as a serious band and then realised they could make more money clowning about. So I'm sticking with my story that Russ Abbot got plays. Edit: I've just checked wikipedia and evidently Russ Abbot formed the Black Abbots in 1977 so it probably was a different band if "The Painter" got plays in 1974. (Why am i researching The Black Abbots FFS!) Gutted! That all said it is still a sh*te tune! .... and this is a souless thread which is probably teetering on the brink of freebasing Edited April 16, 2010 by paultp
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Like it Tony , like it . From now on , records should be classed as " Northern Dave " ones Malc Burton Records like "The Painter" most certainly should!
Guest Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Records like "The Painter" most certainly should! We had better be wary for slagging off " The Painter " , as it may be the Bees Bollocks / Dog's Knees to someone ..... Malc Burton
paultp Posted April 16, 2010 Author Posted April 16, 2010 (edited) This is now becoming an obsession! I've just listened to both tracks (the vid I posted and PB's sound clip) and the lead singers sound the same. Should I edit wikipedia? Edit: Here's a [link to a biography of The Black Abbots] which states they started in 1969 and were initially a serious band. So, one and the same band - I rest my case Edited April 16, 2010 by paultp
Guest Dave Turner Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Like it Tony , like it . From now on , records should be classed as " Northern Dave " ones Malc Burton Less of that Burton. These things can get out of control and as soon as we know it every crap record will be called a Northern Dave. I'll never be able to go out again unless I change my name to Marmaduke or summat Best, Dave (for now)
Dave Pinch Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 i think russ was the drummer. i can remember seeing them on the telly as a kid. dont think he was the vocalist you lot would have been too old for kids tv in 1971:wicked: dave

I'll never be able to go out again unless I change my name to Marmaduke or summat Best, Dave (for now) No all crap records should be called southern anthonys. lol. Back on topic "The Painter" was played out it was covered up at the time I remember I L playing it at one of the midweek do's maybe, Welcome Inn Blackpool. I don't think he would admit it now do you? BTW there are alot of us Dave's about. Dave.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 No all crap records should be called southern anthonys. lol. Dave. Ah, but I'm not an Anthony (or an Antony) Dave, so it wouldn't bother me if they were SOUTHERN TONE
