Mace Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Ronnie Love-Chills and Fever A.C.Read-My Baby's Been Cheating Merle Spears-l Wanna Know More to the point, does anybody still actually play these tracks out...........? If so, I'd personally file them under 'Overplayed oldies'.....
pikeys dog Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Ronnie Love-Chills and Fever A.C.Read-My Baby's Been Cheating Merle Spears-l Wanna Know If you think these sound like Rock and Roll, then quite frankly your ears must be painted on. There are plenty of R&B tracks that are IMO borderline R&R, but they would never be played in Northern rooms, so i don't see the problem with them.
Guest kid mohair Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Ronnie Love-Chills and Fever A.C.Read-My Baby's Been Cheating Merle Spears-l Wanna Know So you have 3 records there, on a scale ....say ..1 is Northern soul and 10 is Rock n roll, how would you scale em ??
pikeys dog Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 More to the point, does anybody still actually play these tracks out...........? If so, I'd personally file them under 'Overplayed oldies'..... The latter two have been hammered on the Northern scene for the last 10-15 years, and never played on the Rock & Roll scene, so that kind of answers the question...
Guest kid mohair Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 8-9-10 kinell... so merle spears is full on rock en roll...
Ezzie Brown Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 l don't... frankly i couldnt care less what genre a record is if i like it.......that will do... buy it own it play it an be damned........prob why i never get to dj, apart from havin shit taste ,no records , im unreliable.............just like a dj perhaps!!!!!!!! only kiddin.......... dont reply mace or joe , please . NO MORE NITE
pikeys dog Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 kinell... so merle spears is full on rock en roll... Nah, they are the only three R&B records he knows the names of, and this is a lazy attempt at being controversial. The truth is, webbydublin doesn't have a clue what Rock & Roll, or R&B are and is just trying to get a rise.,

Without blowing my own trumpet, i've probably forgotten more about Soul than you'll ever know. I'd love to take you on in a battle of wits, however I don't like attacking an unarmed man.

Guest rasfoz Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Really webby you could of come on & said RnB stands for rubbish & bollocks, i think you may of came out with more credit & no need of a parachute when you got shot down in flames
Guest rasfoz Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 What are you on about,Soft-Lad?? Dont know hazard a guess ?
pikeys dog Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Tell me this 'How The Fook Do You Know That'? You don't know me or anything about me but one thing l know about you is....'Blowing My Own Trumpet?' isn't that a euphonism for 'Being Up You're Own Ar*e'? Far from up my own arse, I was pointing out that you are, to put it mildly, clueless. By using such examples to prove your extremely lame argument and in questioning my knowledge of Soul music because I happen to have a reasonable level of knowledge about other types of music proves this to me. Ergo it wouldn't be difficult for me to have forgotten more than you know - since you clearly know, to put it in local parlance 'knob all'. . The three records you quoted as having a high content of 'Rock and Roll' are all 'Northern Soul' records, whether you can get your head around it or not. None of them are played on the Rock and Roll scene - and why would they be? There are plenty of great Strollers, Jivers and Rockabilly tracks out there without the Rock and Roll scene having to resort to playing mid 60s Rhythm and Blues / Soul records... so R&R? Nah don't think so... Seeing three members of the Masqueraders (a Soul group that last time i pulled one of their 45s off the shelves) sat enjoying the music in the R&B room at Prestatyn vindicated playing what i play for me (not that it needs vindication). At the end of the day, any record that has been played and accepeted on any scene, becomes part of that scene. So until you can come up with a stronger argument, I suggest you go on refosoul and find some better examples of Rock and Roll that is played in Northern Soul venues. p.s. if there was no R&B (or Rock and Roll as you mistakenly call it) there would have been no Soul music - fact.
Denbo Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 C'mon kids, grow up. And you never know, your elders might let you stay up to watch Tommy Steele.

Julie Moore Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 What a pathetic remark Might just have a couple of RNB's before l go to bed..they'll knock me out for sure! Webby don`t you mean JD`s
Dazdakin Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 OOOh Errr!! Only just seen this thread, now do i or dont i get involved that is the question?? You all know my views on this, so me thinks i will leave it just as is, besides i tell it like it is and people dont seem to or cant handle a different opinion on here.
Guest kevnewry Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 Philip, leave this thread immeadietly, before i drive down the M1 and take your laptop off ya Leave the RnB folk alone........ Room for everybody here my mate
Mace Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 (edited) Webby, any chance you could list up your top 25 or so NS tunes.....records that really float your boat, drag you out onto the floor at any allnighter and totally fulfill your soul, so we get some idea of your personal taste in Soul music. This is a genuine question and not intended for use as keyboard ammo against you. It's just that, whilst I understand R&B is not to everyones taste, especially the more Rockin' varity (which I think we ALL agree shouldn't be played at NS events) I struggle to understand how anyone into soul music can be so dismissive of the gritty soul tunes that are more accurately representative of 60s R&B. For example, are you saying that none of the grittier Atlantic/Stax catalogue has ever appealed to you. ...and what of the Duke/Peacock catalogue......from Bobby Blands vast output, to the likes of Bud Harper etc. If we are to discuss R&B that has been accepted on the NS scene since it's earliest days then these are surely significant starting points, rather than a random selection of 3 tunes that you dislike, and the mud slinging that follows Regards Mace Edited April 13, 2010 by Mace

Guest Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 True....but it will cost us half a sixpence! I think you are talking Little White Bull
Amsterdam Russ Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 I recently put Jimmy Robbins 'I can't please you' on a cd for my father to listen to - he grew up in the 50s. Said he really liked it. Why? Because, he says, it reminded him an awful lot of Chuck Berry. Sometimes I think that we suffer from too much of a desire to label things and stick them in pigeon-holes.

Webby stop listening to tunes like louis neefs and start listening to tunes like JT Parker, Little Dooley, Jimmy Moore, Otis Lee, Tommy Andre and Sammi Lee all of which have massive Rnb influences then tell me you dont like Rnb . You obviously need educating otherwise you wouldnlt come on here making such ridiculous posts !
Weingarden Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 There's plenty I could say, but I choose to bite my tongue.
Wiggyflat Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Northern soul is uptempo dance music of black tamla origin but can encompass seventies/eighties etc with the right sound. It has nothing to do with r&b,jazz,RARE SOUL,doo wop, latin, popcorn or any other trendy labels people want to call it.It is NORTHERN SOUL.There are plenty of gigs without the term NORTHERN SOUL on the tin as it is a word that is not in vogue. The current word is RARE SOUL.Do not be confused as this word has nothing to do with NORTHERN SOUL.Expect mid tempo, funky latin, popcorn and ballads.Anything apart from uptempo black music.Sometimes the term NORTHERN SOUL has bad connoctations from the seventies ie OLDIES.(Not moved on).NORTHERN SOUL are words to be proud of and not added to a flyer as an afterthought. There is history in the term that no amount of Adidas beard stroking trendy media glasses wearing beardos can steal or attempt to understand.
Guest Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I'm a poet, And l didn't know it, But l sure do show it! I'll go for the (Gene) Latter We are Mods ! We are mostly in our late 30s and early 40s now. We never went to the Wigan Casino because we were too young. But we all collect 60s records. We collect and learn as much as we can about 60s RnB .........Ska.........Soul....popcorn... Latin....... etc We restore 60s Lambrettas and still get our clothes made at the tailors. Many big Mod RnB spins have gone massive on the Soul scene over the last 20 years. Otis Lee ....Charles Sheffield ......Carl Underwood, just to name a few. Most Mod people I know like a bit of everything , from the early 60s 45s right up to the new releases like the new Kings go forth LP That's why we are different to you old soul boys ! We don't have the same musical hang ups as you lot IMO Mod lads will buy unknown 60s RnB n popcorn 45s the same day as a classic 60s beat rarity turns up for sale. Mods have had similar tastes in Soul music to Soul boys at times (Stafford era) ............but things have moved apart again recently. I think you have to take your hat off to the Mod scene These lads do what they do, and they dont give a fook about anyone else !
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 i can't get my head around this. was he trying to ask what Rock 'n' roll songs are played out or was it to be is R & B more soul or classed as Rock 'n' roll. Never heard any R & B at Rock 'n; roll nights and i been to some. maybe the odd doo wop type song like Why Do Fools Fall In Love the closet is a Little Richard song played on the scene but it's not Rock 'n' roll but he was a Rock 'n' roll singer
ImberBoy Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Never professing to be any kind of expert, I do hear RnB that's sounds very soulful and I do hear Northernsoul that sounds very RnB, I love it when we get three rooms where your ears take a fluffy assault of mixed beats! Great that we have such diversity and long may it live. Loads of Northernsoul that you could cross over to rock n roll with.......... VELVET SATINS - NOTHING CAN COMPARE TO YOU Northernsoul coz it was played at the Northernsoul venues, soul? Not too sure, Rock n Roll......... I think so? There aint much that survives being placed under the microscope is there? Webby be very carful that them RnB Catz don't take out a fatwa on you for this RnB blasphemy! I still have them standing out side my house in their turtle neck sweaters and tweed jackets!

Gritty soul/Northern always been played. We did get some real early stuff played 5 to ten years ago but much of it seems to have disappeared to more specialised venues. And anyway the roots of rock and roll lie in R&B as many of the early R&R acts were simply black vocal/R&B acts.
