We have all seen lookbacks where people have described a night as "Across the board, something for everyone".

What does it mean?.....does it mean each dj plays 2 or 3 tunes that do it for YOU? and the rest of their sets are just not happening......so are you only getting 10% of your night?

Or does it mean one dj,s spot did it for you and the rest of em,s spot did not.....so are you still only getting 10% of your night.

My thought.....if there's only something for you and not the whole night.............then there's somethng wrong:yes: or are we only mean,t to enjoy a little bit of the night? as it would seem. atb Dave

Always thought "something for everyone" meant if you pitched up you'd get a free dodgy CD, or "soul patch" for your holdall, or even free food. Surely that's what it means?

Don't it mean "with an element of suprise".In other words random plays that don't flow..."You weren't expecting that were you!!!".- "Too right mate".laugh.gif

Too often it means one of the DJ's plays Angie Stone - Wish I Didn't Miss You, Drizabone and the rest of the night is oldies. I've challenged one or two so called ATB promoters who I now didn't play northern to the present day to post playlists so we could see for ourselves. Needless to say they never posted any.

If they claim to play across the board it should be northern to the present day....

Does it mean ................

If you turn up you will be led down some stairs and oiled up by three Turkish mud wrestlers with lisps, forced then to undress hurriedly and place on some sort of wet suit that is never ever going to cut the mustard if you ever swam in it, then ordered to eat three small melons and then told to dance for some Arab rich boy over her studying modern history and physics, then a quick shower and back to his place for open sandwiches and crisps,

Coz that's what happened to me when I went to The 100 Club and what will happen to you if you fall for the "Across the board, something for everyone". Scam!

Yup agree with the sentiment of this. Though Angie Stone etc viewed as "oldies" amongst the modern crowd.... and as for Drizabone it's fooking ancient

The acid test for me when doing one of these ATB nights is do they have CD players? If not, it's not ATB. Simple. As I am sure Imber knows most of the best new releases ain't on vinyl. (in fact many of them ain't even on CD either).

Sorry folks...........not really getting a sensible answer....must be me!.......what l mean is .....we read it all the time in the lookbacks section....people commenting on nights/nighters saying that "the dj,s played something for everyone,a bit of everything......music down the MIDDLE.......but is this really "jack of all trades, master of none".....or "something for everyone" translates to trying to please everyone and suceeding in pleasing.....NO ONE.......Because everywhere we go that seems to be the view....dave:yes:

yes but these are modern to the oldies crowd, hence across the board, I'd love one of these across the board nights to book Robin and let him play what he played at Stafford t'other week, see how across the board they are then.....but then again that set could/should be now classed as oldies laugh.gif

thumbsup.gif I think you've answered your own question - and very well too.

Usually put up by lack-lustre promoters who are just trying to attract anyone through the doors in order to boost the coffers.

Lack of vinyl and unwillingness to put on decent dj's just adds to the monotony.

Personally I like the expression as it tells me where to avoid.

Yes Chalky a solid Modern Oldies spot from Robin-so are the old Modern oldies newies because they are new to some people who didn't hear them when they were new ? or is everything old when it becomes released? what about new 60s ? or old 70s ? If its good play it-and if you yearn for something different search out those places!

as long as its soul

I lurv 60's.......... but then a lot of 70's does it for me also - and some of the stuff i hear from the 80' 90' 00's does it for me as well

Jonny Herbert from the groovejunkies played a full set of what i suppose would be termed as 'modern' at an event I was at (i didnt know most of em) and in my opinion he played the best set of the night - i was on the dancefloor throughout his set.

but...

other dj's on that night played a mix of allsorts of eras and i thoroughly enjoyed that also

2 genres of soul for me

i like it, i don't like and the later i use to rest from the first

Darcyboy asked a sensible question and as usual the 'oldies v everything else' ' brigade have spoken. Those in doubt, get along to Bestwood, that is certainly across the board. It was'nt 99% oldies, in fact it was'nt even 60% oldies. it was a damned good mix of rare 60's, underplayed 60's, lots of 70's, a few classics and some very modern stuff. so yes, it was certainly 'ACROSS THE BOARD'

well thats my take on it anyway yes.gif jeri

To be fair it's mainly ''everything else brigade '' that read or contribute to these sort of threads . Yes without doubt Bestwood is a superb example of ''Across the board'' events , but a gain you don't have to travel to Bestwood for them l, they are all over the country.

Anyway my idea of something for everybody means a well stocked bar

Think the oldies nights that you guys go to have it spot on as regards to not being ALL OVER THE PLACE you know what you like and stick to it........hence a good non dreary night.........not my cup of tea l might add......dave

the 70's is probably more rightly classed as 70's northern so can't really class it as across the board, it has to include plenty of other era soul to be truly across the board. nothing to do with oldies vs. anything else, in most experiences across the board is far removed from what it is supposed to mean. More often than not nothing past the 70's except Drizabone, Angie Stone etc are played and they are more northern in there appeal than modern.

You rarely see a modern DJ at one of these Across the board venues for some strange reason

In fact the best spot for me would every type of music, mixed into the whole hour, I'm easily bored if more than 3 of one type of record gets played one after the other but then that's probably why I wouldn't make a DJ...

Hi again Tony, no the question really was for Chalky, because in the last couple of months we have had SteveJ and Andy "Tats" Taylor on as guest at New Pilsley, and we are trying to operate ATB venue, which is not easy in these parts.

Still interested in a spot?

Don't really know SteveJ, but Tats is quality, one of my mentors when I was a nipper  Steve G answered the question for you really, but why are you limited to DJ's from the Midlands? what is it with the Midlands and sticking only to Midlands DJ's? There are plenty not too far away. Sean Hampsey, Bully, two from just up the road in my old town who can do quality soul music from all eras.

Hi Barry, does Lincs count as E Mids? Both good lads.

But we're really winding "Dave" up with all this "modern" talk. Suspect what he wants us to say is that the only good night is one with non stop raw thumping uptempo northerm soul from start to finish no wishy washy midtempo soul and no "70s disco" music let alone anything more recent :lol:

SORT OF GOING OF ON A BIT OF A TANGENT HERE, BUT THINKING OF THE MANY DIFFERENT GENRES INVOLVED IN THE 'NORTHERN SOUL' SCENE THESE DAYS, THEN CAN A VENUE TRULY PLAY 'ACROSS THE BOARD.' ??????????

DIFFERENT DECADES ARE ONE THING BUT THEN THINK ABOUT THE 'TYPES' OF MUSIC

HERE'S A FEW OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

CROSSOVER

BOOGALOO

GARAGE

JAZZ FUNK

R&B

SKA

DOO-WOP

POPCORN

ROCK N ROLL

SOUTHERN SOUL

PHILLY SOUL

GOD FORBID...EVEN DISCO

LOADS OF OTHERS AND LOTS I'VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF AND WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS ANYWAY EVEN IF IT CAME UP AND BIT ME.

at Stafford last week there was all types of soul music played from the off. All were played 25 years ago so considered oldies as such but I dare bet plenty of it would be considered too modern for many of the across the board promoters

Which is what it is mainly played in the east midlands (nothing wrong with that if thats what you want)

Think that Fish & Mark are really west midlands guys, who I know well, but I'll book DJ's from all parts

We have Sean Hampsey on at A1 soul in August.

Growling oldies brigade ? Can't remember reading anything about growling oldies brigade standing on the sidelines in any Lookbacks :whistling:The growling would be the bar staff (one or two of them anyway) Those standing to one side growling would have just been served and are growling back at the bar staff, it's how we communicate in Bestwood wink.gif

No two Bestwoods are ever the same, all depends on the guest DJ, ...next time @ Bestwood ...Ted Massey...and Spiv....Ted can play all night long for all I care

Like Debbie said earlier, it's not an oldies night, might vere more towards oldies if the guest DJ is known for oldies, if guest DJ's are known for modern, then the night veres more towards modern...simples....

Saying that i'm a 60's girl primarily & although i'm starting to listen to a it more 70's (it's being drip fed slowly!laugh.gif) i just can't get into 80's-Y2K stuff & wouldn't go to a do thats advertising thats what its playing...i probably wouldn't attend a do that said atb either though!

Same everywhere it seems Barry.

You simply cannot please everyone because the scene and what constitutes soul / northern / modern is now so varied. Events write ups full of people bigging up their mates sets too. When did it all become so complicated? As others have said there is good music and bad music in all types / styles.

shouldn,t of asked such a daft question...............seems to me everywhere is across the board wether they'll admit it or not/like it or not.........dj,s not singing from the same song sheet..........thats why it,s hard to get consistency nay impossible.....one minute it,s up the next it,s down, this way then that way. like l said oldies venues that are known as such have no identity problems therefore they have great nights......same for the modern venues..........the rest....wink.gif need to get sorted methinksyes.gif

it aint a bit complicated at all, people who go to events usually know what kind of music to expect,

most people choose the genre or make up of the music played they like. and go to events/venues where they can here this. simples

as to lookbacks , its not the done thing on here to be open about a write up and the maxim seems to be if you cant say anything nice then dont bother postinghatsoff2.gif

Since the music night I co-run is called "All Things Soulful", then I suppose this is one thread that I really should post a reply to.

We run what could be termed an across the board night. 5 hours or so, once a month on a Saturday of tunes from the 6ts to new releases. The philosophy being that a lot of people either like soul from all eras, or are open minded enough to listen to them and then decide. Other attendees prefer their Northern/Modern/New tunes or whatever, and by mixing it up, they know that they don't have to wait long before hearing something that floats their boat. If you want a whole night of one particular genre, and hate others, then this isn't the gig for you, but then the title sort of tells you what to expect.

Does it work? Well, we've been paid well to do it for over 5 years at the same venue, so we must be doing something right.

So, here's a recent playlist (all oldies are ovo, newer items on whatever they were originally released on, vinyl, CD, whatever);

Frank Beverly - "If that's what you wanted"

H.Andrews "Steppin' out"

Rell "Let me show you"

Kindred The Family Soul "Everything I need"

Temptations "Girl why you wanna make me blue"

Randy Brown "Do you love me"

Kim Weston "A thrill a moment"

Adrians Evans "Weatherman"

Joyo Velarde "The way we are"

Tommy Tate "Do you think there's a chance"

Garland Green "Don't let love walk out on us"

O'Jays "Let life flow"

Candi Staton "Young hearts run free"

Terry Callier "Look at me now"

Quasimode "Sayonara blues"

Mark Grant/Russoul "It's over"

Groove Junkies/TC Moses "Far away"

Margie Joseph "Come on back to me lover"

Donny Hathaway "Whats going on"

Karin Jones "Ready ready love"

Johnathan Jeremiah "Whats a guy got to do"

Cool Million "Back for more"

Magnificent Men "Keep on climbing" etc....
