12. Irma and the Fascintors - You Need Love

13. Gene McDaniels - It's a Lonely Town - Capitol - 1963

14. Barbara Banks - River of Tears - Veep - 1967

15. Little Joe Cook - I'm Falling In Love With You Baby - 1967

16. Bob and Earl - Dancin Everywhere

17. Debra Anderson - Funny How We've Changed Places - 1974

18. The Spellbinders - Chain Reaction - 1966

19. Robert Parker - Let's Go Baby

20. The Chi-Lites - Love Bandit - 1966

21. Percy Sledge - Baby Help Me - Atlantic - 1967

I have often pondered this given the fact that over the years I have played Northernsoul "cold" to some of my friends who were less than impressed.

I think it's a case of going fishing and catching a fish the first time out and getting hooked for life or watching football and seeing an excellent goal then ending up supporting that team through thick and thin.

Northernsoul played cold misses too much out, the atmosphere, the ravel, the venue, the anticipation, the naughtiness of sneaking out and staying up all night when most souls are in their beds, these are all very potent components that make up a soulie and to trying to circumnavigate these small but important pieces gives an incomplete jigsaw puzzle that can some times make no sense.

I will be brutally honest and say that I have heard many records on CD that meant nothing to me until submerged in the full flow of our strange cult with all of the trimmings needed to make the meal a hearty and memorable experience.

Put your CD away, log off from Youtube and save your self some time, you can never capture the essence of Northernsoul without an allnighter, to say so is to lie and to believe so is to have never done an apprenticeship on the scene.

I think I pretty much agree with you there Simon.

Also the word SOUL in this context I presume means Northern or Northern related. Send someone a Northern CD and it could leave them flat. Send the same person a CD of either Sweet Soul, R&B, Deep Soul, Southern Soul, Soulful House, Modern, Funk etc etc etc and perhaps just one of those would knock them off their chair.

Individuals will pick up on a genre or sub-genre because something just hits them about it. I think some folks could hit onto Northern and like it but as you say there is far more than the track itself in order to appreciate it fully.

It's hard enough trying to get some soulies who have been on the scene years to listen to different aspects of the scene never mind try to get someone into it from one CD?

This is not a statement I use often but Simon is right, the scene is made up of many facets which need to be sampled simultaneously to have the full experience.

Good luck.

Cheers

Absolutely....how will it be kept our special underground scene if you open it up to tourists...

Agree, there's already too many of the wrong sort of people into it due to certain people over commercialising NS a few years back, cull not recruitment!

TOTALLY AGREE. BESIDES A 'SOULIE' SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE CONVERTED. THEY SHOULD BE THE ONE GOING OUT LOOKING FOR IT....WANTING TO HEAR MORE BECAUSE OF THE BUZZ IT GIVES THEM. IF THEY GET THAT BUZZ IN THE FIRST PLACE OF COURSE.

AGREE WITH MOST OF YOUR OBSERVATIONS ON THIS ONE EXCEPT THE ALLNIGHTER BIT. GREAT POST BUT CONSIDER THIS.

Surley the essence of what is Northern Soul is the actual music/sound itself. Many people who are into northern, who are now in their senior years, had their first introduction to soul/northern at many of the smaller evening venues and youth organisations.

When the music/sound grabbed you and you were hungry for more, that for me was the very essence of the beginings of Northern Soul. The allnighter gave you all the bells and whistles so to speak and was integral to the scene and very important as it still is today for the introduction of new and vibrant sounds.

Arkright,s post is spot on when highlighting how people grasp the genres of soul.
