Jerusalem Soul in the Holy Land

Tel Aviv Soul Club

I have just got back to England after a short break where I was lucky enough to visit the holy city of Jerusalem, I do not profess to be religious in any way and I am a bit of a fraud because I wanted to visit Yoni's record shop smack bang in the old city.

I have been a great fan of Yoni's web site for many years, it was the very first dedicated Northernsoul site but I have been buying and selling records with him for years and as I was in Egypt on a family holiday I thought it appropriate to hire a car and drive to his shop.

While we were there at Easter thee most important Jewish festival, Yoni told me of a strange site that he saw earlier that year. Yoni was preparing food for his family and he sliced open a potato, to his amazement there was a strange and remarkable pattern and he had kept the potato safely preserved so I could witness his find.

Yoni led me down a small flight of stairs to his cellar and opened a small cooler box, wrapped in muzzling cloth was a potato. To my amazement he showed me the two faces inside the spud, it was of Ady Croasdale and Dave Rimmer talking at The 100 Club.

I wept, the detail was incredible, there was no mistaking Dave or Ady. Here I was in old Jerusalem during the Easter celebrations and I am being hosted by one of Israel's biggest Northernsoul names whilst staring down at two of my fave DJ's on a Perennial Solanum tuberosum.

Later that evening Yoni and I ate the potato along with a salad of green Israeli vegetables and some rather nice cod pieces.

There used to be a marble statue of an angel in West Norwood cemetery that was a ringer for Richard Searling.

A 100 years + of lichen & pollution had stained it's once white wings ....

One dark and windy night, the current girl friend and I were walking home through said necropolis , when the the angel started to sing + cry at the same time .

That was the night my Angel (who has black wings) cried ......

We hurried to the Kebab shop and I had a shish can't remember what the girl had ..

Excellent! Very funny. I needed a good chuckle and that did it. Was it a King Edward?

Has Rimmer gone Hasidic or is that a bearded artichoke?

What's an artichoke Ade?, It looks like a banana ?

I realise what Hasidic means - It is a branch of orthodox Judaism that promotes spirituality and joy through the popularisation and internalisation of mysticism.

I mean everyone knows that, but what is an artichoke?

And I have said this many times before, but please don't encourage Simon.

This is a serious forum and Simons nonsense should be actively ignored and discouraged at every opportunity.

The man is clearly mad.

He is also a Vespa owner.

Many thanks

How many Northernsoul tracks have we got with a religious theme?

MAN OF VALUE by The Del Royals

And of course Tyrone Barkley, I'm not even sure that the Del Royals version was played on the scene, is it the original? And didn't Lou Rawls do it as well?

Terry Callier - I Don't Want To See Myself

I know that northern stall in the souk Carol! And I'm ashamed to say that's where I picked up a boot of 'Pyramid', just couldn't resist ph34r.gif
