hehehe

im not knocking him for doing what he's doing. takes a lot of dedication to get to where he has i just feel that the music is pretty weak in the scheme of things and if you are going to cover something as firing as love is alright then do a decent job of it. im guessing some people who buy this will not even know the phil la soul version. just buy that instead or the cbs one for 50p.

when someone knocks up a heart shaped record you have to enquire as to why. became obvious on listening.....something has to sell the record if its not the music. can think of 1000s of ways to spend 7 quid better.

cant really see anyone playing this stuff out ?? bamboos version of tighten up seems to be getting airings

The way he markets himself may not be the way the more 'traditionalist' of us like to see our music handled, but we are in 2010 not 1968, music styles and trends are cyclical in their popularity and if it wasn't Soul, he would probably have been trying to resurrect some other musical style. The young man hails from Detroit and has therefore every right to explore and express his soulful music heritage. Mind you, he has done a bloody awful ELO cover biggrin.gif.

PS, for those who may not have had knowledge or sight of the original, follow the link below, I'm glad my copy is in much better nick than the one on here .

I agree that the Cliff Nobles original on Phil-A-Of Soul is still the best, as for white guys can't sing soul music, Dean Parrish, Chris Clark, Dusty Springfield, Len Barry, The Reflections and a host of other 'Blue Eyed Soul' artististes from the genre known as Northern Soul would have to be written out of annals of our music. Whilst soul is predominantly a black music genre we have to give credit to artistes of other ethnicities who sing from the soul. Type in Mayer Hawthorne into the search bar at the top of this thread and have a look at what has been posted before on this site. As another case in point search for Eli Paper Boy Reed next and tell me that the current 'White Boy' soul offerings are not SOULFUL!

Since when are Chis Clark and Dusty Springfield white guys singing soul? I'm pretty sure they are women.

my 2 pennys worth:

MH stuff is as weak as a 2 day old asthmatic kitten with 1 lung and 3 legs. it badly needs putting out of its misery.

This is what happens when people (white or otheriwise) get grand ideas well above their talent limit. that said, like most pap, im sure it sells very well.

There are some excellent new bands/artists...imho he aint one of them. 10/10 for getting off his arse and making it happen.... 2/10 for weak content. a great tune murdered.

well said. Ditto!

im no traditionalist . open minded music lover who buys most black music genres from 50s upwards, yes.

the point being made was i thought it was a gimmick to cover up the weak music.

and to be fair it sounds like if 'it wasnt soul' it would be something else which is a major downfall. its almost like 'im doing this 'cos i think its uber cool' . soul minus the soul.

the fact he hails from Detroit is neither here nor there. If anything he should be better positioned to do a better job.

Actually the original post concerned the video for 'The Ills' which is brilliant. I personally think the guys vocals are weak and he looks more than a little like Jarvis Cocker.:lol::hatsoff2: Edited by K.I.D.

in my opinion he is just too light... its not HORRIBLE, but he's not that good. i'm afraid he'll get a lot of credit for being

"clever" and "unique" but the music just isnt that good and unfortunately alot of young people today arent familiar enough

with real classic soul music to appreciate when something is really good. i dont mean to be hating TOO much...but i wouldnt

spend my money on it.

white guys CANNOT do soul:no: , they can do dancers, Rufus Lumley/Round Robin

If you mean Round Robin "Do The Slauson" etc then I'm reasonably certain that that dude isn't white.

Heard this record earlier today. He's on Stonethrow records just like Mr Hawtorne. Better voice though.
