Britmusicsoulfan Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Here are a few of his clips. It's not bad! https://www.spinner.com/interface/mayer-hawthorne?icid=main|main|dl5|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spinner.com%2Finterface%2Fmayer-hawthorne
Swifty Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I quite like that , thanks for sharing Cheers Swifty
Cunnie Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 Not bad & a mate of Snoop Dog as well. Been around for a while now. Have a listen to him covering a big Butch spin. Proper Northern
Cunnie Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Thought the clip above might have generated a bit more interest. Maybe the vinyl version will
Samson Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Thought the clip above might have generated a bit more interest. Maybe the vinyl version will The drums are excellent......but I just don't like the rest of it. Why wouldn't you just listen to the original?
Pete S Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Thought the clip above might have generated a bit more interest. Might have done if I hadn't posted it up 6 months ago
Soulacola Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Might have done if I hadn't posted it up 6 months ago This guy has been generating interest among a lot of younger people who down load for a while. I remember hearing "maybe so, maybe No" being played by some Djs in a London bar on Brick lane about a month ago and the bar was rockin, everyone appeared to be listening to the tune and singing along. depends on your age group but this is soul for teens and twenties, its hip, tight and not dad like. My son whos 18 is trying to get a vinyl copy of some of his stuff to play out in the bars he djs in, not sure i could play this but i reckon hes very very cool. love the videos and like his attitude. he's not got Marvin Gayes voice but he sings within his range and thats class.
Ian Seaman Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 this LP is great but shame the 4" vinyl doesn't play very well !! i bought the LP on it,s release and have it on indoors all the time. ian.
Guest Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 (edited) Don't know if any other soulies have come across this young fella, this track is a different, though no less soulfull, rendition of the Cliff Nobles classic, which is the flip side of 'The Horse' using the same backing track as the A side. Nevertheless, a very creditable performance by this young chap from modern day Detroit. I hear much Chicago influence in his tunes, particularly that of Curtis Mayfield, check out some of his other tracks, especially 'The Ills' on youtube. www.youtube.com Edited June 1, 2010 by K.I.D.

Nocker Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Agreed we'll leavethe ELO cover to others! Fortunatly Mr Blue Skys isn't on the CD, but you get a nice litlle 4" single of Love is alright with it.
Guest son of stan Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 (edited) I've heard his version of, "Maybe So, Maybe No" a few times on the radio. Not bad, but it always makes me want to reach for the original. He can't quite pull off the "..bom BAM, bom BAM..." bit with the same aplomb as the New Holidays. Good effort, though. Is the rest of it in a similar vein? BTW I liked Raphael Saadiq's recent LP which has the same sort of feel to it but consists of original material. Edited June 2, 2010 by son of stan

Cheers mate, I know what you mean regarding the originals (of any good soul tune), check out the video that some generous soul added to Mayer Hawthornes 'The Ills' on youtube, some magic images. Thanks for the tip on Raphael Saadiq, I'll check him out. As an aside, Eli Paper Boy Reed earned himself a couple of plays on our Soul Galore Radio show on RedRoad FM 102.4 FM, we stream live on the net (www.redroadmusic.com) every Sunday 7-10 PM, also well worth checking out.

Hey, I think we need a thread on Frank Wilson "Do I Love You", how about you go start one? yours sincerely, Muppet Your odious tone shows not only your lack of personality but a complete lack of social skills. In what way does my post represent a re posting of the three posts that you highlighted? Your supercilious attitude in your initial response will never endear anyone to you, you Antipodean pillock. As for Frank Wilson, have you ever seen two copies of the 6 supposedly available of this record on the Soul label, side by side to compare them? No, neither have I or to the best of my knowledge has anyone else, so there may well be a case for a new posting on this subject:P,how about you fuck off knobjockey!

Guest Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 He was just saying that there were already 3 separate threads on the same topic. What's wrong with that? He wasn't rude about it. It was the supercilious tone that riled me. The man is obviously some kind of convict shipped off to the new world many years ago! I hate people like him, just like their comments, they are unnecessary and unwanted.

Guest posstot Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 Anyway, yes he's good. I'm quite jealous...i'd love to be involved in recording some soulful stuff. I'm quite handy onthe drums, and singing in the bathroom

Cunnie Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Good to see some of you finally waking up to Snoop Dogg's mate Mayer Hawthorne after what seems like an eternity of shouting him up on here. Now have a look and listen to this.
Guest Brett F Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Hi Ted, Martin, yeah I played his 12'' at the recent excellent Morecambe weekender, good soul music is still being recorded.

I got told off by a fellow 'Soulie' for posting this on the site a month ago, somebody on You tube put the video on 'the ills', excellent images that fit so well. https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/132896-mayer-hawthorne/page__view__getlastpost

Guest Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 has any one seen this amazing clips to go with it You can slag my opinion off., BUT, this is not, or anywhere near soulful, its some white guys doing a BLOODY GOOD version of Love is all right, but no way do they sound like the original....their vocals are too smooth, the original has a harsher edge on the vocals, I have it somewhere, Cliff Nobles if memory serves mwe correctly...........BUT white guys CANNOT do soul:no: , they can do dancers, Rufus Lumley/Round Robin, (I'm open to correction regarding the ethnic origins) for example, BUT THEY CANNOT DO SOUL:no: , and before you all start THINK about it

There are a few singers who sing/sang what I define as soul, a few of which are IMO are very good. Two for example, Johnny Daye, George Soule johnny daye - stay baby stay - george soule - get involved - Not bad for a Fred Dibnah impersonator eh?
Ted Massey Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 As you raised this thread Ted Sure you ain't just bigging up Johnny Weston's younger and dare I say more good looking brother? thats not fair all the women swoon over Johnny boy;)

Whilst soul is predominantly a black music genre we have to give credit to artistes of other ethnicities who sing from the soul. Type in Mayer Hawthorne into the search bar at the top of this thread and have a look at what has been posted before on this site. As another case in point search for Eli Paper Boy Reed next and tell me that the current 'White Boy' soul offerings are not SOULFUL!

Jnixon Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 my 2 pennys worth: MH stuff is as weak as a 2 day old asthmatic kitten with 1 lung and 3 legs. it badly needs putting out of its misery. This is what happens when people (white or otheriwise) get grand ideas well above their talent limit. that said, like most pap, im sure it sells very well. There are some excellent new bands/artists...imho he aint one of them. 10/10 for getting off his arse and making it happen.... 2/10 for weak content. a great tune murdered.

Jnixon Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 So you don't like him then? hehehe im not knocking him for doing what he's doing. takes a lot of dedication to get to where he has i just feel that the music is pretty weak in the scheme of things and if you are going to cover something as firing as love is alright then do a decent job of it. im guessing some people who buy this will not even know the phil la soul version. just buy that instead or the cbs one for 50p. when someone knocks up a heart shaped record you have to enquire as to why. became obvious on listening.....something has to sell the record if its not the music. can think of 1000s of ways to spend 7 quid better. cant really see anyone playing this stuff out ?? bamboos version of tighten up seems to be getting airings
