Wow. Is he still at it? I hope he perseveres. He interviewed me extensively for several hours a few years back. It'd be great to get it all documented 'cos Cleethorpes Pier was a magical nighter and obviously a brilliant setting.

Health and Safety would probably prevent it ever happening on a pier again I guess..........we got away with murder back then didn't we?

By the way, how's Mary these days? Is anyone in touch with her?

Please give her my best Rob. She was an absolute one-off and the East Coast would have been a lot less lively without Mary and Colin!

Ian D :D

Any chance of a list of Big Cleethorpes sounds and records that were pioneered there and then went big elsewhere.

I spoke to Mary and Colin last Wednesday Ian , and I am pleased to say that they are both in good health and spirits , especially Mary , as she was drinking a lage glass of it - whisky - just before my call :shades: . We have arranged to meet up on the Saturday of / at The Brid Weekender , so I am looking forward to it spending a highly enjoyable day with the pair of them .

When I spoke to Mary last week and approached her about your request Rob , she was delighted ( as you know after speaking to her ) to talk about the " real " story behing Cleethorpes , as we both agreed ( as you did with me ) that the story of Cleethorpes should be now told - warts and all - about those halcyon days . I have no fear that the end result after compilation between you two will make interesting and worthwhile reading .

Yeh Malc, finished my article 1500 words for the Brid mag, i could have wrote thousands more but sadly it needs to be short and interesting and i think and hope i have managed to capture the nuts and bolts of how it evolved from the inside and what it was like for the likes of us , just sending down to mary today to read because i am allowing her add a postscript

Great memories of Cleethorpes in the mid 70's, with the wind blowing on the front just about knocking you over, and the Pier sinking under the weight of people. My favourite Cleethorpes sound from those day's was Bits & Pieces "Keep On Running Away" is this still played ?. Also remember Mary had a Soul Night in Lincoln, I think it was at a pub called The Turks Head but it was so long ago now my memory might be not that good. Keep posting those old pics much appreciated down here in Cornwall.

Despite it being creditable on the music side ( especially in the entrace / modern " room " with Colin Curtis , Paul Rowan and Rick Scott ) , Ian Payling ( Payo ) who promoted that night on the pier , sadly took a lot of flak for the conditions inside ( caused by / responsibility of the owners ) which were beyond his control , i.e. the cold caused by no heating , the rain coming in through the roof , and as Rob says , the condition of the carpeted areas ( which were stickier than the floor of an Amsterdam peep show booth ) .

In respect of the cold , a lady came up to Colin Curtis and myself and stated the fact that it was cold . Colin looked at me and said to her ( recalling a true story by the way ) " Cold ? this is not cold . There was one place in the midlands where me and Malc were at where the heating had broken , They had put space heaters in , and the people were dancing around them . Dance a little bit more - you will soon get warm "

The lass looked at him , then at me , shook her head and walked away ........
