The Kelly bothers, were and still are based in Chicago. Originally a gospel group, they then switched to secular music and had a hit on the Federal label 'It Won't Be This Way always' in 1963, they then moved to the Nashville Sims label (Love Time was on the Sims label), and eventually to Excello when Excello bought out Sims. There's a great CD on Ace/Kent of their Sims/Excello output. Terriffic Southern soul. They reverted back to Gospel in the Early 70's and the surviving brothers have their own Church in Chicago.

There's a detailed article on the Kelly brothers in Juke Blues #63, get a back issue here

Robert Kelly's solo recording on One Way, "My Time To Win" is an excellent early 70s Chicago ballad with a beat. If you admire records like Otis Clay "You Hurt Me For The Last Time" this is right in the same bag. He was an excellent singer.

Hey Taff,

The Kelly Brothers Photo is previously unknown shot that I picked up from Robert when I interviewed them a few years back for the Juke Blues article I mentioned above.

Is it from Juke Blues that you got the scan of the photo?

Offe Reece is in the back, with from left to right Andrew Kelly (deceased), Robert Kelly and Curtis Kelly. The 'fifth' member not in the photo is TC lee who went solo after a few years in the group.

Martin, I have a call out to our "head" of Graphic Design to confirm origin of the Kelly Brothers pic in our flyer.

He's currently on the lash in Prestatyn so it may be a while before he responds thumbsup.gif

Update from Planet Prestatyn....................... Paul McKay confirms that the pic on the flyer is actually from a UK President label promo photo that he has.

Taff,

That amazing! I had never seen the photo before Robert Kelly produced it, and all the US based Kelly brothers gospel experts I've spoken to, hadn't seen it either. Tell Paul I love his taste, and looking forward to seeing him at Sleepless Nights in Dublin at the end of april.

HI Martin

I'm back from the lash now and can confirm all the above from Taff (Saxapfone). I'll try and get a scan posted of the whole thing later on today. Looking forward to Dublin my friend!

See you then
