I was looking through eBay last night and I came across a Buy It Now listing for Curtis Mayfield's first solo album, Curtis on Curtom.

It was still sealed and 12 bucks, wich stroke as a mega-bargain for a SS copy. Of course, I thought it was a re-issue; still sealed, 12 dollars and 2 available. But I read the full description and it didn't state in any part it was a reissue.

Before I did something I could regret, I emailed the seller asking wether it was an original copy or a reissue.

This is the answer I got:

The LPs we offer are not re-issues. Re-issues usually appear on labels

like Simply Vinyl, Stardazed, Rhino, etc. and in most cases even use

different artwork. Our Classic Vinyl Reproductions are new sealed

re-pressings, on the original labels, lovingly reproducing the original

artwork. Sonically our Classics feature new state of the art reproduction

techniques. And the original cover art makes them a wonderful package for

any true vinyl lover.

I thought I'd share this with you all so we can all come out of the cavern we've been in for years...

They are being issued, and not for a first time, I thought that'll make it a re-issue?

Anyway, semantics...

Just been to his eBay store, he has loads of stuff, all 'lovely re-presses', loads of soul, and most of the stuff isn't even that rare in the first place.

Funny enough, the prices go from 3 to 20 dls. Probably they're reproducing the price as they do with the artwork?

I guess I and he had some connotation with "reissue" that there would be licensing or something.

Even though they are "repros" of original albums, they are re-issues (or even bootlegs if they are unlicensed).

I'm amazed he can say they aren't reissues.

What next? "This isn't mono, it's extremely narrow stereo"? Yeah, I get the idea.

Surely eBay should do something, as they have around 1000 different titles?

Scorpio!

I'd put all my dollars on it. Re-issue, re-pressed, bootlegged.

I'm always on the lookout for still sealed copies of albums - but I always ignore those with the 'Buy It now' option - nearly always repros and always Multiple listings including other genres

Virgin used to sell stuff like this before they closed. Suspicious looking LPs like a Marva Whitney that was a dead ringer for the original (I knew because I'd found a mint copy in a charity shop the week before). Wondered whether they were legal or boots...

Always wanted EvilBay to add a selection

the Seller believes this to be

  • A genuine acetate
  • An original release
  • A licensed reissue
  • A bootleg or later copy
  • has no idea

or something simliar

That way there can be no doubt what the Seller is intending..............

EvilBay dont care to be so definitive, inorder that sales revenue is maintianed,,,,,,boxing.gif
