Pub Nights

This is not about would you start one but how well attended can they be. Should advertisement be noted more or not

because i sadly other week was on my way to a venue here in Peterborough and upon the trip noticed a sign on a pub notice board outside that said Northern Soul night and date was the next day. I was intrigued as to who would be doing it and who might turn up.

me and dad went got there and was 1st ones in the part where Northern soul would be playing. there was 2 people man and woman who was setting up. They had records and some CD's i think. proceeded to play a wide mix of some well known motown, a few Northern and some bits and pieces from the 70's like Love Really Hurts Without You. did hear the odd tune i wasn't expected.

Well sadly it was a poor event, now i wasn't complaining about the music but fact was me and dad was the only ones there interested in hearing the soul music. there had been 2 others who joined in the part but they didn't seem too fussed. the bar woman only seemed happy with the obvious You Can't Hurry Love type song. It was sad that for free entry there wasn't a few more who would attend not even anyone who likes general soul/motown. we left early as dad said don't say anything but let's slip out and it meant they would be playing to no one. if they had packed up the bar lady could have easierly played the jukebox again to those in the pub who wasn't there for the Northern soul.

anyone else experience things like this and would you try any new pub nights advertised as Northern soul

In Stockport there is a good choice of decent soul nights but there are still dodgy pub and dinner dance type evenings . On the established soul nights you know they will be well attended and a good mix of quality sounds being played .

The other nights will probably have a looser more flexible music policy and are probably run by oppertunists that may or may not have dipped their toe into the scene at some time ,unless the DJ is known I would steer clear

There are however exeptions Brian Walker used to run a great pub night in Stockport a few years back

I used to go to the George Hotel which was near the railway station in Peterborough in the 70's. They had a northern soul / motown night every Sunday night in the bar. It was run by Steve Allen and used to get absolutely rammed. Was well advertsed and well known by everyone. Great nights, shame it ain't there now. Whos' your Dad ? I might have known him before i migrated to Australia. Tony T Bone.

my dad is James Wallace but is known as Jimmy and he says he always rememers Tony Edgely who was from here who went to Australia to live and remembers when you visted back here seen you around at the right track and city club and so on.

That's nice to know mate, give my regards to Jimmy. Has he still got his denim jacket with all the patches on ?? Tell him i will be back in the U.K. next week, coming over for Prestatyn. ATB Tony. OZ.

Still wearing denim jacket with patches on it same as me and mine but getting full on his so got another one and started putting patches on it lol there's not stopping him
