Hi

A bit of fun for the weekend.

A few years ago I made up a design for a Northern Soul Monopoly with Ric-Tic and Golden World taking the place of Old Kent Rd and Whitechapel. Frank Wilson's DILYIID was Mayfair coz of rareity and value. Shrine were the green streets etc. Community chest was selling and swopping records/ palmed off with a boot or a nice shiny white demo The Water works. Ramesy Lewis. If I had to put a record in jail today it would be Mike Pedicin 'Burnt toast & Coffee.

How would you fill your board?

Don't know if you are aware but a few years ago some organisation in the US put out Motownopoly - allegedly this was not authorised by MCA/Motown!

A handfull of the games turned up at Beating Rhythym in Manchester (Tim Browns' shop) & I got one as a Birthday present from Mark Bicknell.

I haven't got a clue what it actually looks like inside as it is still in its cellophane wrapper - I thought that it might turn out to be worth something in years to come which may be true if the rumour I heard was true. Alledgedly (I feel I have to keep using that word) an injunction was taken out to prevent its sale and only a few 'got out' so to speak.

I will take a couple of photos of the box & post later - unless anyone else has it & does it quicker.

Wow! I'd sure like to see one of those. I'd have it straight out of the box and heading for Mayair. It would be interesting to see how they arranged the property. Bet top blue was FW. ...and Old Kent Rd...something by Black Russian!

Would be good to see those photo's Mike.

Maybe Glenn Gunton & Neil Rushton of Joe Boy have had similar ideas.....if he can do a 'Pop up' Wigan Casino.... anything can happen.

Cheers for the info .

I was thinking maybe streets should be studio locations, Michigan Avenue (Chess), East McLemore Avenue (Stax), West Grand Boulevard (Motown) etc... If you own several studios then you are starting to create a monopoly (literally) of the production of soul music.

I like the idea of trading records through cards, or maybe a set of cards representing artitsts to be signed to the studios (labels) you own? Who would be the most sort after? You build your little label empire with your stable of artists. Sounds fun to me.

That makes it more interesting Matt. Proper anoraks board game then.

If you pass GO you collect a nice tasty w/d or acetate item you've been looking for.

I think we are on to something here....

I like the idea of acetates and mastertapes or copyrights as rewards for passing GO, that allows you to build your catalogue of songs so, for example:

You own Chess, you picked up Linda Jones from an artists card and you have her record Do I Love You from a master tape you picked up earlier. Now you have to pay to get it distributed and make more money.

It's getting away from a Northern Soul Scene game though into a record industry mogal game. A northern scene game would be completely different and based in this country.

NORTHERN GAME

Sections of the board are venues? You get to be the biggest promoter buying up all the big venues throughout history (would the Casino be Mayfair)

Here's an idea as well....

Crate Digging Cards - YOU SPEND A FEW WEEKS IN THE STATES LOOKING THROUGH WAREHOUSES.

- on very rare occasions you get a Crate Digging Card and luck might turn up something amazing that you can break at your venues.

Chance Card - THE DS FIND DRUGS ON THE PREMISES, CLOSE YOUR VENUE FOR TWO TURNS...

Chance Card - THERE'S A RUMOUR THAT ONE OF YOUR RESIDENTS IS PLAYING BOOTS, LOSE REPUTATION.

I've got a headache now from thinking too much on a Saturday morning... laugh.gif

Like I said I'll post photos later but the three 'Mayfair' properties are Ain't No Mountain High Enough, War and I Want You Back and the aim of the game is to "buy songs, collect recording studios, trade your studios for a Gold Record (which) sounds easy enough but lose your voice, get dropped from your group, or have your record fall from the charts, and it becomes a little more difficult and a lot more fun!" (reminds of another thread on here about celebrating failure actually).

The players pieces as opposed to the top hat, car, scotty dog etc in the standard game are star, saxaphone, musical note, microphone, guitar and juke-box.

Likewise mine is still sealed, mine came from Tim.

I did not know the Motown cafe had shut down, last time I was there was in 2003.

They're all closed down now Dave. Shame as they were always worth a visit when you were in the cities. The Orlando one was probably the worst one. The Las Vegas one always seemed to be rockin' when we were there. The staff were great. I got a nice waistcoat and some other 'stuff' before they closed it. Problem was ..it was $3.00 a beer and when the music came on and the staff metamorphed into The Vandellas or The Tempts the beer went to $9.00! Ah the shortsightedness of big business eh? I'm still convinced that had the chain been franchised and fans could have bought into it they could have been successful. Guess we'll never know now.

That's ace! laugh.giflaugh.gif I was thinking more of records or labels, but venues could work, lol.

Or how about the 'Who Am I' game of northern soul DJs?

Am I male or female? Oldies or newies? Did I DJ at Stafford? shades.gif

I pinched one of those too dave laugh.gif

Oops just realised Dave T's post hasn't copied properly in my reply - I meant the Motown cafe menu in the shape of a gatefold LP!

Didn't realise they had all now shut!

Went to the Orlando one in 2000

Cheers

what would you go to jail for. playing a re-issue or CD and you have been ordered to go to jail

maybe the streets would be based on record labels, most collectable label being mayfair etc

A few things

Go to jail for

a) knowingly passing off a bootleg as an original

b)promoting a night knowingly on the same night as someone already established in the same town (has been known)

c) nicking records out of Rob Messer's sales box

Go straight to Go if

a) a tune you're playing goes 'big'

b)you find a great unknown record

c) you get to a nighter and find loads of your mates there and have a wolloping time of it.

d) finding the records that were robbed out of Rob Messer's sales box.
