Guest mark hanson Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Trying to piece together Gary Rusbrooke's spins from Stafford & Leicester Allnighters. I know some will be from the late Wigan era too as he was a resident by the end of the Casino. I Have about 50 thus far and a few I think he played but need conformation on. Any help gladly received. Here are some I thought he played but need to make sure: Thee Midniters - 'You're Gonna Make Me Cry' (Whittier) C/U as Jimmy Burns N Group - 'Keep On Running' (Wes Mar) Sunny & Sunliners - 'If I Could See You Now' RPR Gary Sole - 'Soul Light Touch' (Knight) Flip to 'Holdin' On' his old Agents C/U from late Wigan Bobby Sansom & Light Years - 'King Of Tears' (Acta) Flip to 'The Happiest Day Of My Life' that was C/U as Paramounts Audrey Slo - 'Gonna Find The Right Boy' (Swan) Sure he played this when he was co-running The Brit in Nottingham so may have dropped it by the time Stafford & Leicester started in 82 Any cover up names would help too. Many thanks Mark Hanson

jocko Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Surprised at N-Group, thought that was Keb in mid 80's sure Gary would be happy not to be credited with that one Used to hero worship Gary a bit in these days, in a young off my head sort of way, he was definitely plowing a lone furrow at times, particularly at Clifton Hall Rotherham. Other ones definitely to add Cassadons - 2 Sided Lover Jackie Beavers - Come Back My Love Twilights - You're The One Sophisticates - I Can't Stand It Ascots - Another Day, He picked up Chessman c/u of Richard did he not and carried on with it, as it still had loads of legs on it. not saying he was first on these, pretty sure he featured them all heavily at Rotherham and therefore probably introduced at Wigan, but would say in early 80's these sort of things defined his sound. Cmon Mr Anderson get a notebook along to old Trafford and ask him, better than watching the rubbish on the park surely! Got notes of this sort of stuff somewhere, but they are in boxes in vareious houses along the way! Top bloke and one of men responsible for changing the sound of the 80's "revival"!
Guest in town Mikey Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 I always associate the Q - Thats The Way with Gary.

Richard sold him Bobby Wisdom - Hand writings on the wall and The Lovers - without a doubt, but once he had them for some reason he didn't like them so sold them to me for £150, wish I could buy them for that now. Dave Greet now has the Bobby Wisdom.

Dave Raistrick Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Yep that's right - James Conwell. Gary bought lots of cover ups and unknowns at the time - l often travelled up to Wigan with him and others from Nottingham - Fantastic days !!! .
Guest mark hanson Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 Thanks everyone so far. Like I say I had a lot of these already but wanted to make sure. I have a play list with him playing The Embers - Playing The Part Of A Fool C/U which is the Royal Esquires. I always thought this was Keb's first but Keb did buy some of Gary's tunes. Records like the Admirations / Aspirations on Peaches is one I would always associate with Richard, same with Eddie Daye aka Frank Wilson, Cecil Washington - I Don't Like To Lose, Executive Four - I Got A Good Thing Going, Imaginations - Strange Neighborhood Johnny Guitar Watson - Ain't Gonna Move, Combinations - Whatcha Gonna Do, The Creations - Remember Me, Moses Dillard - Pretty As A Picture Ray Agee I always put down to Dave Raistrick, though Blue Max played it at Catacombs earlier. Others Dave played first were - Lonnie Russ - Say Girl (AKA The Salvadors). Pat Brady played The Cashmeres and the Traditions. Soul Sam & John Poole had Magnetics 'Lady In Green' Most of these were played at Notts Palais Alldayers from 78 as I have a lot of Soul Source fanzine's that carried a lot of Wigan, Palais, Yate, top sounds. It's like a lot of people credit Gary with MM & peanuts - The Phillie which was Dave Thorley's, as was The Q and others Think Gary played Magnetics - When I'm With My Baby first though? This would have been late Wigan when John Poole and him were finding Al Williams, Professionals, Masqueraders - How 'Professionals' C/U, EJ Chandler 'Superlatives' C/U 'I Cant Stand To Lose You etc. It was a long shot everyone would remember exactly after all this time. It was cause of what Gary played that I started DJing. Many Thanks Mark

Early Stafford it was almost unknown and only a few copies had turned up, don't think it really got that much play until after he had given up djing. But I do think he was the first or one of the first to play Williams & Watson c/u aka Lamont Cranston Band

Nonsense, of course, that it never occurred to anyone to listen to the b side!

Tony Turner Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I'm sure that Gasoline Powered Clock-Forest Fire On Main Street was played as Baltimore & Ohio-Running Away.

Guest mark hanson Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 few more for you Mark...apologies if already mentioned Delettes - Look At Me Magnificent 7 - She's Called A Woman Kris Peterson - Just As Much 7 Sons - Don't You Dare Say No Freddy Butler - You Better Get Hip Girl & Give Me Lots Of Lovin' John Edwards - Ain't That Good Enough Passionettes - My Fault Rees Flores - Look Into My Heart Soul blenders - Tightrope Thanks Chalky but Magnificent 7 was a Yate spin for Ian Clark in 1978 Kris Peterson was around 77/78 when played at say Wigan or Yate (I say Yate as it was Dave Thorley's Monica) Anyway see you tonight mate.
Guest mark hanson Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Seem to remember seeing the Magnetics when im with my baby in a play list in Blues and soul circa 1977/8 Ted you're right in was found at the same time as Lady In Green and became a spin for John Poole & Gary around late 78 / 79. Think also like Sam played it at Wigan before Gary started there. Dont forget Gary did play his big tunes longer than most. He once told me he'd tried The Vondells at Wigan but got no reaction so dropped it till Stafford & Leicester (though it's on the live at Wigan clip on here). Then went on to be probably his best remembered record. It was a flook he got the Vondells at all as Dave Raistrick who covered it as The Stagemasters apparently was supposed to sell it Dean Anderson, but somehow Gary ended up with it. Well that's what Dean told me years ago. Mark
Guest mark hanson Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Gary cut loose many years ago, but he still sees a few old mates at Man U. Good news is that he going to DJ at The Stafford Re-Union. I cant wait to see him either. This is one of the reasons I wanted to piece together a CD or 2 as a memento of what he did to keep new 60's discoveries going after Richard stopped playing so many at Wigan. With Pat Brady too.

Modernsoulsucks Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I don't think Gary ever had, Combinations - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (Kimtone). Unless someones got it on tape, I never heard him play it. Early Stafford it was almost unknown and only a few copies had turned up, don't think it really got that much play until after he had given up djing. But I do think he was the first or one of the first to play Williams & Watson c/u aka Lamont Cranston Band Me and Dave played Combinations. Same for Del-Tours as I got it off Richard. Gary may have had a copy too. Don't know. ROD
Arthur Fenn Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Me and Dave played Combinations. Same for Del-Tours as I got it off Richard. Gary may have had a copy too. Don't know. ROD If it helps with the history thing, re the Deltours this was Richards Ernest Mosley & John Anderson sold me the 2nd copy about 2 months after Richard had started playing it, thing was Sam had dropped northern & i ( briefly ) got 2nd pick at the bowl. Sold mine in 82 (when i decided to move completly to modern ) to Chris Plant, who also got my Bobby Wisdom ( c/u as Billy Kenedy ). Arthur.
