Shsdave Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Is there any doubt over whether this is a genuine 60s recording ?
grant Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Is there any doubt over whether this is a genuine 60s recording ? when was it first discovered/played?
Guest in town Mikey Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Is my world about to come crushing down Dave? What have you heard? IMO its the best discovery of the decade. As far as I know it was only played from around 2003/04??
Johnmcc Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Is there any doubt over whether this is a genuine 60s recording ? No, unless you know something...........
Shsdave Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 No, unless you know something........... I don't know anthing John just heard last bit of a conversation that seemed to suggest she was part of the Steve Brookstein "family" Could of been a joke ? Just thought I'd throw it up & see if there were any rumours flying around ?
Dave Rimmer Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I don't know anthing John just heard last bit of a conversation that seemed to suggest she was part of the Steve Brookstein "family" Could of been a joke ? Just thought I'd throw it up & see if there were any rumours flying around ? There will be now
Ady Croasdell Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 They wouldn't have chosen that name in a million years, she sounds like a librarian from Redditch

Jumpinjoan Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I hate this record. The perfect song for Cilla Black. Listen to it and tell me it does not sound like Cilla
Chalky Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) I hate this record. The perfect song for Cilla Black. Listen to it and tell me it does not sound like Cilla I must have cloth ears I got to admit it ain't the greatest vocal/record on earth but it is good northern!! Edited February 19, 2010 by chalky
Guest Matt Male Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Funny, i never realised it was only around for a few years, it sounds like the sort of stuff from youthclubs when i was a teenager, it just feels really familiar for some reason Is it really a 1960 release as i've read? It certainly doesn't sound like 1960, late 60s maybe. Agree with Joan i don't like it either. (i'm assuming were talking about Love Finds A Way?)
Ted Massey Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 discovered by Adey Pierce John Anderson had never seen one or heard of it until then
Mark Bicknell Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Over rated, over priced and worst of all over here lol I'm with Joan on this lousy record. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Dave Abbott Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I THINK ITS GREAT NORTHERN. POPCORN WYLIE JOBBIE
Eddie Hubbard Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Vocals are a bit dodgy , but the sax break is one of the best ever , no way could anyone replicate Mike Terry .....Best ,Eddie
Corbett80 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Wouldn't imagine it's 1960.....pure '66 i would of thought? Then again the Del-Larks date makes you question all of it!
jocko Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Poor soul record, f**cking fantastic Northern Soul record. Yes I do differentiate also, sometimes, it has the balls to make up for the weak vocals, unlike some of the other "pop" stompers previously mentioned!
Ady Croasdell Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 that's put the cat amongst the pigeon's Could you change your avatar please, it's putting me off doing my accounts. Or send her round to help.
Ian Seaman Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 has to be one of the best dancers records out there !!! OK the vocals are a bit weak but it is pure Northern Soul and without doubt a real gem of a find. Dunno about Chalky having cloth ears, there must be 100's of sounds with dodgey vocals that get played every week Again if you look round most people that hate it haven't got a copy and that ain't going to change much as i can't see many more copies being found now & good !!! let it remain dog rare ! Ian.

Ian. the cloth ears bit was referring to the Cilla Black bit, I don't hear Cilla in there. I know vocally like said it isn't one of the greatest but as far as Northern goes, like you say one of the best dancers, and at the end of the day dancing is what this scene is essentially all about, taught or not Can remember at the 100 Club, Guy was looking through the records and he dropped everything and dashed for the dance floor when this came on some years ago. Dave Thorley Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Pocorn told me that it was a contract job. She came in wanting to put a record out, paid Richard whatever, he recorded her, arranged pressing and handed them over to her. As far as he was concerned that was the end of the story. Took him a while to remember the record when he was first asked about it. Producers like him would work on their own material for their own labels or the label they were signed to at the time and also do contract jobs. So Richards name does pop up on a few Detroit things where his involvement may have been little. Normally when you see executive producer on a label, the chances of them being at the studio when the track was cut is only 50/50 Dave Edited February 19, 2010 by Dave Thorley
Gege Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I had the pleasure of talking with Popcorn Wylie a few times. He was a very nice man. When I brought up the Margaret Little record he gave me a few clues that I am still trying to piece together. He gave me some cross streets in Detroit of where he thought that he had to go to pick up some money from the person who invested in the recording. After looking in a 1966 Detroit Phone Book it checked out. Maybe there is still hope that there is a box of Margaret Little records out there just like the Clara Hardy record on TUNA that turned up???
Rob Moss Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Popcorn told me that a guy came to him with a singer he wanted recording. Thought he was a barber and seemed to think the guy's name was Geneboro. I agree with Eddie Hubbard - the backing track is awesome. Vocals are terrible. Mrs. Miller meets Tiny Tim. Popcorn thought that he had a tape somewhere with the backing track on it so we will see...
Prophonics 2029 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I have seen a copy go through ebay so is it very rare or in the 10's of copy's known to mankind. Oops now I check it has 3 up for sale.

When she'd recorded it and picked a few up, did she just disappear? What else is on the Geneboro label? Found an old thread on Soulful Detriot. https://www.soulfuldetroit.com/archives/1/664.html?1021614989
Jumpinjoan Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Again if you look round most people that hate it haven't got a copy What has this got to do with anything? There are hundreds of records I dislike that I haven't got. No one buys records they don't like do they? There are hundreds that I love that I haven't got either so I don't see your point. Billyboy Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) They wouldn't have chosen that name in a million years, she sounds like a librarian from Redditch I Knew her well, & its time to own up... I was in this library on this very rainy Wednesday in Redditch. I just happened to have my old trusty 1960's compact reel to reel tape recorder tucked under both tables. Couldn't believe the tunes this Suebo chain smoker was belting out whilst stamping away....everybody going... SHHHH ...and all. Well just a small hop over the pond and I slapped her on vinyl.....JOB DONE. Tried palming it off to Cilla and Dusty ....but they just told me to piss off. So there you have it...Sorry to disillusion so many these past years...but the cats out the bag now & boy I feel so much better... Yep ...Maggie Little....always made you pay if your book went overdue.....QUITE A GIRL I'll get me coat.... Edited February 19, 2010 by Billyboy

John A Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I've heard the "barber" story..from Tim Brown, said Popcorn Wylie owed his barber a favour.Margaret being the barbers daughter. I think the records great btw.
Simsy Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Clocked one of these on the decks (Sam) at Rugby and exited quick to have a step about. Great tempo, great tune! Mick H has got one as well. Who else? Edited February 19, 2010 by Simsy

KevH Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 It is Cilla all day long. Love Finds A Way Chuck Must admit when i first heard it,i could hear what i thought was a "manufactured" sound.Right at the beginning is a strange "Ohhh baby" vocal from a chap that sounds like its been added. Saying that ,folks with the knowledge say its genuine 60's - Mike Terry involved. Was it recorded for a TV show? Personally ,i like it,perfect dancer with all the ingredients. But is it too perfect............?
Wrongcrowd Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 One hell of a backing track, and whilst vocally it's not great, it's a great all-nighter tune...which to these ears sounds nothing less than a genuine, on the fours, Pocorn Wylie, Detroit... And come on, if anyone was going to 'manufacture' a retro-tune, then it's not hard to find someone that can sing is it.........
