well she's probably busier than ever now thanks to the members of soul source biggrin.gif would we see this kind of fuss if a well known soulie who went to all-nighters etc offered dance lessons.

From me YES. I think its pretentious and arrogant to offer 'how to dance to soul music' classes. Whoever does them.

Been having a think about all this (ouch) Black music has a fairly rough trot as far a success goes in comparison to other musical genres , when top 100 lists of albums or songs are compiled for TV shows etc black artists hardly get a look in black music is a minority music and northern soul is is a small part of that minority if you get my drift .

We are not as influential as we and I include myself like to think we are and the rest of the world keeps turning .

Russ Winstanleys attempts to cash in have made very little impact . The Casno Cafe etc people just walk past makes very little difference really nor I suspeck will these dance classes .

This is in no way meant as a dig at Paul Sadot or Urban expansions exellent play OUATIW but wasnt the purpose of that to entertain and possibly bring NS to a wder audience ?

In the strange but small world of northern soul we analyse every little detail there are no rules and no one has the right to say how it should be , but one thing for certain its still fun .

Going back underground now the soul police wont find me there rolleyes.gif

Hi mate. The play was a brief homage to a scene i love and respected. That had changed my life. Didn't intend to make a hit or money (lost £35,000, but didnt come on here begging!) When it became a parody and Russ was wanting memorabelia and West End producers wanted White artists singing songs on stage, they wanted a Gravy train, I pulled it! Deleberately havent released DVD etc. I didnt off the back of it start a Northern Soul dance School. I didnt teach the actors to dance, i taught them haer the beat to listen to and love soul music and make it their own.

No James...im just taking the piss out of this tacky crap. The term Northern Soul means f---k all nowadays. Its a mis-nomer, actually meaning 'no more soul'.thumbsup.gif

Interesting "about turns" indeed laugh.gif James? unsure.gif

Anyway who cares about the dancing queen and her lessons anymore, it's so tame compared to some of the other garbage being touted about in the name of northern soul. The point has been proven where there's NS, there's blatant commercialism.

I can confirm that this is indeed the case, and has forced our legal department to issue the following letter:

Dear Mr Arkwright,

Please find enclosed a notice of intent to prosecute for counterfeiting original Wankco merchandise.

As you are probably aware, Wankco are the Worldwide Brand Leaders in NorthernSoul Tat, and as such we cannot allow our brand strength to be affected by superior copies flooding our already saturated market.

This is our final notice to you to cease and desist in any further infringements of our designs, logo's (including the Deformed Soul Fist) and intellectual properties forthwith.

How?

I defended Chris's right to put on some casual classes six years ago without getting personal insults in the neck. Also the way they were presented was not overly commercial, cheesey or comical in nature. They had some sort of integrety (to my eyes anyway).

Today I defend the rights of those to critisise this new very commercial and arguably cheesey and comical offering. But at the same time I have highlighted the risk of the non transitive nature of the end result that some seek to gain some sort of compensation for the wrong they have felt. It can easily spiral out of control and lots of people get hurt feelings.

Essentially, and taking on Debbie's rose tinted nice life is too short outlook, we (as a scene) may be better off had neither of these dance classes have been put together. As has been pointed out, their net effect is minor, their externalities limited, but lots of people seem to be insulting each other, even if they do have very good grounds to seek compensation for apparently being wronged by these classes, somehow.

No about turn from me, as long as you agree with my opinion about the integrety of the offerings, I refer you back to my comments about opinions, rudeness and niceness on page 2 (I think). Two different packages, but same line of arguement, just about innocent.gif

It was said with a smiley face and then a few self righteous brothers chump up about how great and perfect this scene is (which for the most part it is):

On this perfect scene:

Ive never heard deridery comments on here or venues about the overplayed oldies, baggy/beer towel wearing brigade

Never noticed events deliberately run on same nights

Sellers dont drip feed rare records into the market...... The list goes on

The great thing about here is that any hypocrisy is written in print for all to see (less they now go delete those posts)

As for the commercialism, seems its ok only for some to attend or create films/plays/dance lessons/Revival reunions/music hall events and stick the word WIGAN in but not for others, end of day its a big menu of choicee you can have your soul rare or well done with all the trimmings.

Mike when you saw me leading the Diplomats conga, did you notice the smile on our faces. It was the smile of death, we were celebrating the fact that most northern soul records started as naive attempts by artists at making a buck out of a their musical skills, the fact that they became tragic failures who were completely ignored by mainstream and only known by the appreciated by the knowledgeable few filling us with glee,we could really feel the angst (goes down on one knee, clenched fist to heart whilst remembering to switch off flashing light whirring NS dickie bow)

Its about integrity mate, if you don't get the difference between Paul's play and Winstanleys tat and the other tat referred to on here then you are never going to get it.

And no amounts of "self righteous" or "soul police" cover up insults are going to change that.

All good art has integrity, ridicule all you like but that will never change, and neither will individuals lack of integrity,

I really try and not get involved in this now but this is a pretty good summary of where large chunks of the scene are today. Very sad.

Although every cloud has a silver lining, some of the humour on here on this one however has been great, and almost a retutn to the good old days.

Simple!

But that#s like comparing Paul's OUATIW play with that rehash musical version. I refer you to Jocko's recent post on this page.

If you don't agree with my view point about the packaging, product and the generated externalities you won't be able to understand my line of arguement, which is essentially the same on both threads (six years apart).

You raise the issue of integrity. I'm not debating whose whose events/productions/tat are best. its about freedom of choice, the right to buy some NS willy warmer or go learn how to dance like a jerk if i want to. The hypocricy shown on this (and other related threads) is funnier than the humour. A dance school gets ridiculed this time, but not before. The oldies brigade get slagged off, yet its its ok for the (Wigans) chosen few to attend/create revival events when it suits and on and on.

You are right , it is a choice, integrity is a choice, people choose to have no integrity, it doesn't make it right. The fact you choose not to differentiate between things with integrity and those without is your choice and you could argue suggests you lack it also, I do not know you well enough to comment.

In the cases you mention it could be seen as people having no integrity, although I am yet to see any evidence of these examples other than people like you comparing apples with pears, and desperately trying to ridicule people with integrity. It seems to be a feature of many people on the scene nowadays, pretending to champion the underdog but actually choosing the dumbing down of a once great thing, which results in large chunks of the scene having no integrity, one of the reasons I have little to do with it.

And before you quote me the fun bit, this scene had pure integrity all through the 80's, filled with characters who sure knew how to have fun, so lets leave that argument out.

Would be nice to stick to facts for a change in some debates................

If someone thinks there is a market for a NS dance school has it got to get approval from certain NS folk first?

And then the people who decided to go to such lessons, should we deride them?

I choose to let people make their own choices, if that means in your opinion I have no integrity so be it.

If its good it will work, if its crap more likely it will fail.

Thankfully all those records that at sometime some A&R Supremo thought were substandard tosh found a home, huh integrity eh.

Im not saying this will happen with this scene, but this does happen alot.................

I have some friends on the 40's-50's scene, who are very much as passionate about that style of music as we are about ours, they could do all the dance's from the era, they dressed only in 40's-50's vintage clothing & had there homes dedicated to the period that they were into..........they called themselves purist's

But when dance classes became available for this style of dancing, a new breed of people started attending the nights out & the weekenders, they would get in the way on the dance floor, they even started to dress in the clothing, just to try & fit in more, but they did look like they were wearing fancy dress  , it was almost like they were bored & were just looking for a new passtime

When this happened it did put the real purist's off, because the music & the way of life was there life & they felt that it was being ruined by some part timers

Im probably only a youngster on here  , but i have been with my music that i love for over 20 years now

And what i believe is this...............The passionate people will last forever & the faker's will get bored & move onto something else :thumbsup

You think that's rude? You should see me face to face. whistling.gif

NS is more than a night out for some. Its been and for some still is a big chunk of who we are. Its helped to form a bit of me (which bit would be telling), its coloured some of my views of the world, helped to shape my bizzaare sense of humour and is a big slab of my history. Therefore you can expect some frustrations from my corner when I see what I perceive as the Northern Soul scene become dominated by something which, again in my view, is quite different and in many cases, such as these dance lessons an embarrassment.

For example Boot Playing Dj's playing the same 100 records till the end of time. If all the scene was like this, and I guess from your comments you're OK with Boots DJs, what would be the driver for say Butch to turn up /break your beloved Antellects?

The ahem.. uniform. I've been told I shouldn't wear trainers, off the peg shirts and modern clothing. I read on here from some that only real soulies wear the uniform, that real northern dancing only includes floor work, that "rare sh!te" is not proper northern, oh and that we're soul police (like that one). They're opinions - that's all, my head doesn't drop off because they differ with mine.

Northern for me was about an eye on the past but looking to the future (you end up looking like Marty Feldmen though), the next big northern monster, the underplayed side and the odd class oldie. It was about turning to your mates like you've been hit with a bat asking "what the f00k is this?? For me it was never about listening to the same old tunes, as boots, dressing in a style that was only relevant for a few years of the scene. But what pains me to say is that now is the dominant image of NS. Now we have dance lessons so you can 'get out on the floor'...

As for saying this to anyone's face, well those who know me know that given the appropriate situation I would back everything up in person. Of course I wouldn't walk up to someone and comment on their dress, but in the real world, like on here if it cropped up or was relevant to a conversation I wouldn't waste a beat in voicing my opinion. As for Djs playing boots - again I wouldn't waste my time strolling up to the decks but again I'd have no problem debating it face to face if the situation required it. I've done it before and would do so again.

Come off it James. The only difference is then it was Trickster and he's a mate. Now it's someone you don't know and it lacks integrity and is "cheesy"?

The only difference is that Binstanley has hitched his caravan to this woman's site. More fool her for letting him.

I personally don't get this "NS dancing classes thing" whether its Trickster, this woman or old Windbag-Stanley himself doing the back flips. As others have said it doesn't really matter how you dance when you feel the music, but I guess if people want to cut the mustard on the dancefloor and pay good money to do that, then thats their choice. But in the scheme of things it's at best a minor curiosity when there is so much completely OTT garbage floating around branded "NS".

Hopefully now everyone accepts that trying to pretend NS is some sort of glorious underground phenonemon is a lost cause. Long live "rare soul".

anyone remember when some tried getting the term "northern dance" going in the 70s, around the time the uk pop thing was at its highest

I agree with that, just what I thought when I read the soul police thing. I've never seen anyone laughed at EVER by regular scene goers. Always has been one of the great things about the scene, soul as you soul. People only look and watch if you're REALLY good.

Some folks ain't great at it but who cares, the scene has always been mature in that respect. The only ones looking stupid nowadays are those dancing around handbags and with drinks glasses in hand.

This is so true. Even today I see some people throwing themselves around in the most bizarre (to me anyhow) manner and I think to myself 'what the hell...' but I would never slag them off to their faces or even to friends or even at all ! We all started through trial and error (mainly error in my case !) I remember chatting to someone at Wigan (you know how chatty people could be) in 1980 and asking him how long he'd been going and he told me almost apologetically that he missed the first one, when he asked 'what about you' I shamefacedly replied 'it's my second night' , he replied 'Well you've got to start somewhere..." A lesson in manners I never forgot. We all must have looked so shit that first time we stepped onto the floor.

Posted

I dont like boots, i prefer original yes.gif

But some folk are not as well off as others & might not beable to afford the original, if that is the case?, then i would not put them down for buying a boot no.gif

But if anyone touched my Antellects, i would rip there throat out with my bare hands! laugh.gif

My question was about DJs and boots, not punters. I didn't put anyone down for buying boots because of their financial situation but asked how tunes such as Love Slave would get broke if we all ditched our integrity and followed the route of boot playing wannabees.

Also if you think we shouldn't care about what people wear why make the comment on NS hoodies and chavs? Bit hypocritical methinks, personally don't see everyone who wears a hood as a chav but as my first post we're all entitled to our opinions on dress.
