Steve G Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 All of the people who produce this stuff are members of Soul Source, this must be quite hurtful for them, all this slagging off and piss taking - at the end of the day it's just another way of trying to make a living - isn't it? (p.s. before you ask - I'm not one of them ) Well we still have freedom of opinion here...it's not China Pete. Point was thread was about woman giving dance classes, and in the context of the commercialisation of NS, that is relatively timid, so my point was why ridicule her when so many others are making a buck. Seems like many didn't know the extent of this commercialisation / merchandise, and thanks to Arkwright advertising some of his wares on here we now know. Russ Vickers would be shocked if he read all this, but it proves the point made earlier that NS is totally commercialised. Any lingering thoughts that NS is the last true underground scene has been finally laid to rest. Our precious underground scene is overground. Steve

Jordirip Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Our precious underground scene is overground. Steve It isn't though Steve, as it's only the bewildered soulie who buys this tat. what it is, is people on the scene making opportunist bucks out of an ever shrinking scene with less and less disposable income. It hasn't gone any more overground than it ever has. Luckily there is more than one scene under the umbrella of 'Northern' where this stuff is harder to come across than a copy of R. Dean Taylor on Ric-Tic. I'm sure we'll be having dance competitions at certain weekenders soon for the 'best authenticly dressed' kids that have been dragged to the weekender by their parents. Top prize being all you can drink blue slush puppy in a northern soul cup that you can keep and a photo of the winning kid superimposed on an old photo of Mr. M's dancefloor dressed in his/her finary.
Little-stevie Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Got me thinking about what to add to my range now down at the pressing plant.. I don't think there are enough look a like labels to choose from.. From Monday i will have Muttly..... The dogs bollocks in deep soul... Swans.... Something for the soul birds out there.. Wands... Magic new release soundalike 60s stompers.. And.. Muff records.. Fot those who like to dive into a bit of Detroit..
Little-stevie Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Just caught the end of a channel four thing.. "my big fat gypsy wedding " Watch it on channel 4 plus 1 now... Bad taste aint the word.. Watch right at the end, the only thing missing was them Frank Wilson cuff links i guess... Sorry off topic...

Hiya Jordi, I am afraid it's us that's now in the minority/ Agree some are still flying the flag with pride, but a majority? Presumably all this tat sells, or else it wouldn't be produced. Steve
Guest marge Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Do a trendy line in Northern Soul umbrellas. That's next Christmas' pressie list sorted https://soularcade.sp...cessories-D5/p2 How about the gentleman June gardner umbrellas? For the more discerning, oblique reference, umbrella buyers Or the 'Cool off' fridge magnets for the downrtright tarty. As for the Sam and Dave ' soothe me' canestan products, well, beyond the pale. I am still waiting for someone to patent my Gordy Grivels Sorry... I did have a long post about dancing and being self taught and the best dancers having their own adapted moves to the music, but somehow this thread got me talking about umbrellas... and vagisal. Now there's two words I never thought I would post together. Where's the draft button?

stomper45 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Would it be ok if lessons were free? As far as can see nobodys been forced to partake
Paul-s Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Would it be ok if lessons were free? As far as can see nobodys been forced to partake No. Just the fact someone is deluded enough to think they can teach people HOW to dance to soul music. Formalise it. You dance how the f--k you want to a tune. Who judges? Or thinks they can judge? You need to listen to music, love it, feel it and move....any way you want. End Of.
stomper45 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Maybe some people lack the confidence and feel the need to get a few pointers before they incorporate their own involuntary movements to do their own thing and get laffed at in their own right by the soul dance police

Paul-s Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 Maybe she could come to Lifeline or another allnighter and promote her services. Do a 3 record demo dance and give us an insight? Oh no! Even as im saying it, i have visions of a special room at weekenders for beginners with low self esteem...a salon even,Healthy eating and such!

Wombles...they were once underground, but now overground, Wigan Wombles! In fact, perhaps thats a good Team name for Sharons competition crew! Uncle Bulgari is, of course, our own Mr RW. Uncanny resemblance me thinks! Underground, overground Wombling free, the Wombles of Wigan C, soulies were we, Making good use of old tunes that we find, no OV vinyl, cos boots will do fine! Uncle Winstanlia, he can remember the day when he wasn't behind the times, with his plan for the world, take the Casino and turn it into mugs and teee ee eeeeees! Steve G Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 get laffed at in their own right by the soul dance police You know what stomper, I have seen some pretty cr*p NS dancers in my time, flapping about, out of time, no rhythm, pogo-ing about etc. But I have NEVER seen people laughing at them, and that is one of the beauties of the scene - you are absolutely free to express yourself to the music without being laughed at. There are no dance soul police.

Always has been one of the great things about the scene, soul as you soul. People only look and watch if you're REALLY good. Mark S Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Been having a think about all this (ouch) Black music has a fairly rough trot as far a success goes in comparison to other musical genres , when top 100 lists of albums or songs are compiled for TV shows etc black artists hardly get a look in black music is a minority music and northern soul is is a small part of that minority if you get my drift . We are not as influential as we and I include myself like to think we are and the rest of the world keeps turning . Russ Winstanleys attempts to cash in have made very little impact . The Casno Cafe etc people just walk past makes very little difference really nor I suspeck will these dance classes . This is in no way meant as a dig at Paul Sadot or Urban expansions exellent play OUATIW but wasnt the purpose of that to entertain and possibly bring NS to a wder audience ? In the strange but small world of northern soul we analyse every little detail there are no rules and no one has the right to say how it should be , but one thing for certain its still fun . Going back underground now the soul police wont find me there

Going back underground now the soul police wont find me there You arguement is flawed in several ways. Most notably you can not say that because OUATIMW had externalities, and these dance classes also have externalities then they can be compared with out examaning the nature of the externalities. Also this Northern Soul 'thing' is very serious for many people on this DISCUSSION forum. So to say no one has the right to give an opinion about how the externalities of these dance classes effect them as individuals is a deeply flawed stand point to take. It could also be concidered hypocritcal to tell people that they shouldn't have an opinion within the context of this discussion and the nature of subject matter, even the nature of your critisism of the critisism undermines the foundations of your stand. I don't think it's hard to understand that some people on here are 'hurt' or made to feel worse off by these dance classes taking place under the banner "Northern Soul", the reactions on here are their way to seek some kind of compensation for it, those who critisise get support and are made to feel good by others who share their stand point. This is a good outcome, and it's fair. Of course, it may be non transitive in the end (A is better than B, B is better than C, but C may not be better than A), and as a result of all this every one gets wound up and lots of people's feelings are hurt and the insults get out of control and no one is happy. Meaning, in conclusion, that the world may well have been a better place had the dance classes never taken place and never been presented in the way they have. Because they are, technically speaking, a bit pants. Edited February 19, 2010 by James Trouble

There are no dance soul police. It was said with a smiley face and then a few self righteous brothers chump up about how great and perfect this scene is (which for the most part it is): On this perfect scene: Ive never heard deridery comments on here or venues about the overplayed oldies, baggy/beer towel wearing brigade Never noticed events deliberately run on same nights Sellers dont drip feed rare records into the market...... The list goes on The great thing about here is that any hypocrisy is written in print for all to see (less they now go delete those posts) As for the commercialism, seems its ok only for some to attend or create films/plays/dance lessons/Revival reunions/music hall events and stick the word WIGAN in but not for others, end of day its a big menu of choicee you can have your soul rare or well done with all the trimmings. Mike when you saw me leading the Diplomats conga, did you notice the smile on our faces. It was the smile of death, we were celebrating the fact that most northern soul records started as naive attempts by artists at making a buck out of a their musical skills, the fact that they became tragic failures who were completely ignored by mainstream and only known by the appreciated by the knowledgeable few filling us with glee,we could really feel the angst (goes down on one knee, clenched fist to heart whilst remembering to switch off flashing light whirring NS dickie bow)
