It's between The Naturals and O.C. Smith for me. O.C is more classic northern, but i like The Naturals so i went with them. Bobby Womack's version is shocking. ph34r.gif

As far as soul versions go, The Winstons is unbeatable.

They're all pretty much of a muchness after that, apart from Womacks - which, as Matt has remarked, is appalling....

...but as to which version is best? Easy - the 1969 reggae version by the Charmers, with Dave Barker singing lead.

I can't do Refosoul otherwise I'd post it up. Where's that Toad fella when you need him?

Got to be the Winstons for me thumbsup.gif and it's probably the only version I'd listen to start to finish.

O.C. Smith's had something about it but seemed to lose the sentiment in the process. and yes I agree, the Bobby Womack version is pretty horrendous.

Can't remember what the others are like - and I've only just played them.

Mike - thanks for not putting a Reggae version up. tongue.gif

WINSTONS for me - perhaps because it brings back some memories

NATURALS a close second.

oc smith for me

it just sounds more joyus (?) err celebraterly (?)... uplifting  if you know what i mean

give yourself 3 triva points if you can name/describe the episode of the simpsons it was once played

0 if you can name which version - has to be the winstons dosen't it

one bonus for me with the two 45s is that both have decent worthwhile flips

Winstons for me too, has more of a sincere sound to suit the lyrics (if there can be such a thing).

I do quite like the OC Smith version though.thumbsup.gif

Only knew of 3 versions, OC smith, Winstons and Naturals. For me OC Smith tops it, though the Winstons was the first version I'd heard and loved that.

Love so much Bobby Womack, soulman for all moods and soul genres, but gotta pass on this one, survey says uh uh. (can't spell sound effects!)

What's the reggae version, would like to hear it...

ow, I remember it on the Simpsons and pointing it out to my sons, like they were interested, no.gifbut remember nothing of the details of the episode. Nil points for me....

You are going to tell which episode and the context, if none of us guess it, right? smile.gif

Plays as we see Lisa, Homer, and Bart's new T-shirts

How sad..............

The song wins hands down,no but my vote goes to the Winstons..

Winstons wins it for me too,

though I don't understand the strong dislike for Womack's version. It's a solid catchy update of the song that had more of a chance of being played in the black clubs in the US than would a straight slavish copy of the original...

Versions in order of preference

1. Winstons

2. OC smith

3. Bobby W.

4. Naturals

5. Jaedes

O.C. SMITH FOR ME. LOVE HIS DEEP RICH VOICE. WINSTONS A CLOSE SECOND AND REALLY DISSAPOINTED WITH BOBBY'S VERSION. I THOUGHT THE GUYCOULD DO NO WRONG TILL I HEARD THAT.

Beware the cut by Linda Martell though - horrid country version

...an incorrect assessment, as it's actually pretty good for what it is - although I wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't enjoy country music to be too keen on it and I guess that's most people on here except me. I actually didn't mention it in my previous posting because I thought that most people on here would'nt like it.

This, BTW, is the same Linda Martell who was on Fire/Fury earlier in the 60s...

Fair enough Tony. If anyone on here would appreciate that version I guess it would be you. Just not my cup of tea though.

Would it help my defence if I said I'd seen Nanci Grifith live in the early 90s and really enjoyed the gig? Probably not I suppose

smiling as my recollection was similar to yours and so was hoping someone remember it more

Plays as we see Lisa, Homer, and Bart's new T-shirts

How sad..............

that rings a bell, though was it not played via their tv at the time, that's all i could remember

3 points :)

Looks like I'm in a minority of one with The Jaedes then....tumbleweed3.gif

Was a nice refosoul post, certainly first time i've heard it or of it

what else was on the lp

looks like the winstons are starting to pull away unless the workday crowd give oc and the rest a push

will let it run to midweek

 to all those who voted and/or commented so far

Posted (edited)

cheers ! isnt there another reggae version ? hatsoff2.gif

that's what I wondered ... was hoping to hear / compare a reggae version, rock steady one nice enough but not the heartstring puller of Winstons or OC Smith

is this the one Tony R meant?

??

edit

Winston's for me.

And think the Simpson's episode was where Homer got Lisa a video instead of a diary for her birthday.

And more trivia - what was the OC Smith song title used in one of the Simpsons episodes.

oc smith for me
