Anyone tell me whether there are any decent CDs covering the Fortune and Hi-Q labels please, and if so where I can pick them up?

Cheers

Richard

Hi Richard,

Legit reissue companies (including Ace and at least two others I've worked for previously) have been trying for years to license the Fortune group of labels, but the owner - who is the son of the husband and wife who started Fortune in the 50s - is a couple of rarities short of a hotbox when it comes to business.

Unfortunately the catalogue's worth to the likes of Ace is diminishing by the year, as the prime content of its catalogue gradually disappears into the public domain and the OOC boys get stuck into it - as they did about 15 years ago, when an extensive series of Canadian bootleg CDs appeared on the (genuine) Regency label, by the likes of Nolan Strong, Nathaniel Mayer, the Royal Jokers, Dr. Ross and loads more. They're all in 'from mastertape' sound, too - which would suggest a bit of 'insider involvement' somewhere along the line...

15 years is a long time, and I haven't seen any of these around at rock 'n' roll record fairs in ages. But they're out there somewhere I guess...

I don't know how they did it, but the (as far as I know) legit Vampisoul label out of Spain issued two CDs about 5 years ago by Nathaniel Mayer and Andre Williams that featured some of their Fortune sides.

NATHANIEL MAYER:

Not quite but almost...Both, Andre Williams and Nathaniel Mayer were getting paid by Vampisoul in order to get the publishing rights to publish these tunes. Wether Nathaniel and Andre indeed were the right persons to negotiate about these copyrights I am not the one to say...hatsoff2.gif

In fact Debora Brown (part-owner) was offered a cheque worth of 250.000 USD back in the day but refused to finalize the deal with ACE. She said "she would only sell if she was offered the same amount as this other Detroit label"...she was talking about Motown g.gif

tony,

where have we heard this scenario before?....aka rca, which adey has no forthcoming resolution with. LIKE WITH MY WIGAN THREAD.......WHY DO SELFISH PEOPLE WANT TO GO TO THEIR GRAVES AND NOT SHARE WHATS PRECIOUS WITH THIS WORLD.......DO THEY SERIOUSLY THINK THEY ARE GOING TO LIVE FOREVER......OR ARE THEY ALREADY OUT THERE LOOKING FOR SHANGRI-LA?. its their loss if they cant make a dime when everythings booted which aint the way we want to obtain it.

Those Regency bootleg CDs were in two series, one was called "Itty Bitty Treasure Chest" and the other was called "Motor City Doo Wops".

Most if not all of them seem to be available, quite cheaply, from a variety of sellers on amazon.com, who presumably don't realise that they are boots (amazon.com that is, not the sellers - who may well know and just don't want to own up to it...)
