Never was into the badges thing myself apart from the original VaVa badge I had on my cloth & leather handled holdall but had to laugh at this ----

Question: What's the significance of the Northern Soul badges?

Answer: The first cloth Northern Soul badge was created by the Wigan Casino DJ Russ Winstanley, a pioneer in the movement, in 1974 as a way to celebrate the first anniversary of its first "all-nighter." Eventually these became popular with other clubs, as well. "Soulies" would routinely sew these badges to their vests or other articles of clothing as a way to show both their experience and solidarity with the movement.

C'mon, give them a break.

For a yankee article is not that bad, it even mentions OVO:

"A real Northern Soul all-nighter, however, always uses the obscure 45s. Vinyl is part of the tradition."

I suppose we get mocked all the time about our threads in Freebasing...

Amazing read Steve!

So good to be part of this, and I quote, "retro fad"

Strange thing is, as far as I'm concerned, the whole point of my connection with "Northern Soul" is the constant, almost habitual, search for new music to my ears. Retro fads are not my bag Mr. Powers..

You cannot get your breath ..... First the NS scene , now badges .

With regard to the statement " and often wore badges sewn on their vests " , I always found it to be a ferker trying to stitch them onto a string one .....

As a natural outgrowth of the Mod movement of a few years earlier, they were naturally dressed sharp, .................. Because of this, many soulies often dressed in loose, bell-bottomed pants.

Not incongruous at all, the baggies have been rigt all along!

Please Note Steve L ......the Northern Soul dancers rarely drank alcohol on their nights out

All together now, one, two three, . . . . . . sometimes shouted in the crowd, included "Right on now!"

Reminds me of when I took a posh workmate (Cheltenham Ladies College) to Stafford in about 1985 - among the classics she came out with, eg "why is everyone chewing?", and "I've never seen so many tattoos" was "aren't there an awful lot of working class people here". PMSL. Suffice to say the relationship was doomed to failure.
