Djfriendly Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Which is the first press on the Soul International label??? white sleeve - Stranger or kids sitting on the steps - Prophet Of Soul I guess this is the actual original - I have it on SOUND OF SOUL - same track list - I don't have a sleeve with it. Anyone got a pic?
Philippe Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I have both on Soul International, never heard of Sound Of Soul (???).
Guest Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 I have heard some people say that "white sleeve - Stranger" is the 1st pressing, but I am not sure at all if it is. Someone needs to confirm.
John Reed Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 (edited) I have both on Soul International, never heard of Sound Of Soul (???). Sound of Soul was an August Moon label which Larry Saunders/Sanders had a few released on. There are also a few funk things on it too. There is a great version of "All My Friends Call Me A Fool" by Nobody's Child which was also done by Larry Saunders. I was putting a discography together a few years ago and I'll see if I can find it. I also don't know which LP release came first. Top LP though........ Edited February 2, 2010 by John Reed
Djfriendly Posted February 2, 2010 Author Posted February 2, 2010 here are the sacans of label. I am curious if anyone has it with a sleeve. No sign on popsike
Sutty Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 hey Nick! Don't really know why were discussing this on t'internet when you live 2 mins away but hey, whatever lol I have the one with the kid on and it's not the same tracklisting as the 'sound of soul' lp: where did peace + go fly away love bird instrumental (which I don't remember seeing listed before?) aren't on mine, three strikes against me is called threes strikes on me, all my friends call me a fool + darling i love you are not on the sound of soul lp but are on the kid cover one. where did peace go was also on the free angela lp, as were some of the tracks on all the 3 version on here, so looks like Larry Saunders is a bit of a minefield when it comes to working out what he licensed to who whenever? catch up soon cheers Paul
binsy Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I've got the top one and love the 'three strikes on me' track. Not sure which came first though
Djfriendly Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 Come to think of it Sutty I remember trying to figure out all the missing & extra titles a while ago & yes it gets even more complicated with the Free Angela lp. Another curious thing is that the Sound Of Soul one credits the producer as Dickie Diamond (sounds like a mate of Terry Tibbs) NOT August Moon - could they be one and the same? Nick
Philippe Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Another curious thing is that the Sound Of Soul one credits the producer as Dickie Diamond (sounds like a mate of Terry Tibbs) NOT August Moon - could they be one and the same? Nick I think you're right Nick, they must be the same person. Dickie Diamond is also the producer of the "Free Angela" LP. Larry Saunders was featured recently (or not ?) in the excellent magazine In The Basement, I'll try to finf it to see more details on this. I'd be curious to see that Sound Of Soul cover...

Nick If you look on page 5 of the attached pdf, it has a picture of Marvin Gaye and bit about August Moon being Dickie Diamond https://www.southsiderichmond.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/heart-and-soul.pdf

So he learned with Don Robbey, this may explain why his name is on every song of Larry Saunders LP's ?
Philippe Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I have heard some people say that "white sleeve - Stranger" is the 1st pressing, but I am not sure at all if it is. Someone needs to confirm. Yes, "Stranger" is from '71 and "The prophet of Soul" from '76. It's in the copy of "In The Basement" (issue 47, May-July 2006) with an indepth article (plus interview) on Larry Saunders. The authors found out that Ledisi was his daughter and she made them connect with her daddy. Very interesting, we learn that Trudy Lynn is his sister and and his father was none than Johnny Ace ! The "Free Angela" LP was the first one, released in '70. The article mentions 2 singles on Sound Of Soul, but no LP. Was it ever released ?
Djfriendly Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 The article mentions 2 singles on Sound Of Soul, but no LP. Was it ever released ?
Philippe Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Well it exists, as you can see from the pics but seeing as I can't seem to find any other people who have it & it may have not had a sleeve then perhaps it was not properly released??? That's my idea. In the article, they don't mention any other LP than the 3 already known.
