Shame it's always the 70s in these films sad.gif It just perpetuates the myth in the media that northern soul died in 1981 when the casino closed. I'd love someone to set a film in todays scene, although i suppose dancehalls full of sweaty middle-aged people just aint sexy for an audience. ph34r.gif

My god! Just seen the trailer for the film 'SOULED OUT' and unfortunately, it is f--king horrendous....bad dancing, bad dialogue, line dancing northern, cliche rubbish, incorporating badly edited wigan dance footage. Bit like 'CARRY ON AT THE CASINO'.....what a pile of s--te.....as predicted...embarrassing!

When will non-scene people stop making crap films about it and when will people of the scene stop helping the twats!

Of course Binstanley was proud to be adviser...cant wait for the 'Hollyoaks' attempt...hes also adviser on that!

Great post, sums it up for me.

Don't know why they bothered

Waste of time and money,

Voices of East Harlem - Cashing in, should be the title track

I've just received a reply to this assumption.......'No it F*#in isn't'......lol.....the trailer does look a bit chessy, I personally cringed a bit when the comment was made 'And the chicks!'....I actually thought it was all about the music, I'll wait to make full judgement on seeing the whole film, I don't think it'll be shown mainstream here & as 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown' was, will be destined to some of the alternative cinemas...which may not be a bad thing.

I knew a lot of people on here WOULD like it. Thats why these crap films keep getting made....no one really cares.

And for some, i think they experienced Wigan purely on a tourist basis...just like the film....so it is probably an accurate portrayal of their superficial involvement in Northern Soul at the time...which is fine. But to me, its a very 'Carry On' approach. Enjoy.thumbsup.gif

What is it with you Mr.Sado just because you think you are some kind of Writer /director /producer, or whatever you dream to be .... just because you wrote a play, which i aggree was very succsesful, you think nothing can ever be done again without your seal of approval....you think your word is sacred....whats up ? jealous cause you were not "consulted" ?......as a matter of fact we saw the version in Bolton of your play which you said was "crap"....but had standing ovations ....

Looking forward to seeing more details on this, have worked with Elaine many times in the past and her attention to detail/ style/feel along with her inside knowledge of the scene/ soul music based on her own lifelong interest will help bring something to the screen that shows some real passion...

Time will tell i guess...

Lets have em and then the lookbacks can start...

Agreed. If Elaine has anything to do with this film, then IMO immediately it becomes of interest. Unlike Souled Out.

 .....Like using a classic Ns track like 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' to highlight a film about a dead fish & waring neighbours ?

That's it...i just must go & see it...it can only be class :D

Sorry guys...& you know I love you really you dirty 'half' blue :D ( Also I think you're stance is wait & see what it's like anyhow?,which i too subscribe to) But by making the statement along the lines of it's great 'cause so & so did it comes across a bit narrow minded doesn't it?.

It makes me wonder if you may be getting caught up in the web that (imo) always dogged Ns...It always appeared to me that, apart from the smallish band that sourced the music & drove it all,... a lot of the people in the crowd were more in love with, or rather more influenced by, the image & percieved 'coolness' as deemed by the faces rather than the music itself!

Which makes me smile when there is all this talk about defiling Wigan Casino by making it look like a sideshow for tourists.

This is only an opinion based on what I remember...I was too young but to catch a fleeting glimpse towards the end in the flesh, but as a young lad I used to avidly read the columns in Black Echoes & Blues & Soul which I regularly bought. I can vividly remember the 'cool popular kids' that used to go from our area around 76/77..& I would say a good 50/60% (probably more!) of them didn't stay with or really care about the music as they got older...I wonder if they ever really did? So my point is...after about 76...in the main was it anything but?? I'm guessing..but were more people there for the odd experience than there were regulars? It certainly seemed like that to me at the end. So I think the point that someone made about 'rose tinted specs' is very apt.

Back to my original point...My feeling is that...If you love the music how can hearing it in any situation bring you anything but joy ?? .. It's something I have never been able to get my head around!

Before anyone dives in...my statement about Elaine was just highlighting my point...I love the stuff she has done & hearing 'Cliff Nobles' when viewing that trailor of hers just brought nothing other than a warm glow to me...despite the fact that there is no logic for it being there (again imo). If someone else had done that my guess is that it would probably have been slated to high heaven!

On a similar line...Simsy...perhaps you could explain why hearing classic Ns tunes alongside moving images of young people enjoying themselves whilst eating a KFC brought such revultion on you ? What was so wrong with that? Something else I couldn't see.

:D Don't know why i've got involved in this quarters edition of Groundhog day again :) ...I only popped on to check me SSFF score & partake in the the new top 500 debate. I guess keep reading all these over the top slaggings of something that no one has even seen yet gets to me. Whatever happened to innocent before trial !

I think Mark Bicknell's post said it all really.

One thing though...i wish they would just get it out there now & get it over with

The point that Pete is trying to make is that it was HIS idea for the play,HIS hard work and effort that saw it to fruition. If you thought of something(whatever it doesn't matter what)developed the idea marketed it,then saw someone try and take it over, water it down and try and take credit for the lot, wouldn't you be annoyed?

Winstanley was in the right place at the right time to make a lot of money out of Wigan then and now,he saw the commercial possibilities and still does.

It was Wigan that put N/S in the mainstream and the reason that a lot of people left the scene.Russ Winstanley did that, and he for some reason he thinks he has a God given right to trample over anyone to get his snout in the trough when he thinks there is something for Russ Winstanley...........NOT for anybody elses benefit/the scenes benefit.

I disagree. I don't know why people keep having a go at Russ Winstanley. He played Northern Soul around Wigan for years before the Casino was set up, so I don't think he was as opportunist as you make out. He was the one who put all his endeavors into building arguably the most popular Northern Soul venue of all time and good luck to him. Were the Abadi brothers opportunists when they opened the Twisted Wheel or Chris Burton when he opened The Torch or Mary Chapman when she opened Cleethorpes Pier or Dave Thorley when he opened Stafford? Without the Casino and all the other venues over the years there wouldn't even be a scene. If Russ hadn't have opened Wigan Casino the scene wouldn't have grown the way it did. He also gave a lot of DJ's the opportunity to break a lot of records in those years and that's something we should applaud surely?

All this bile and hatred that keeps pouring forth simply fuels negativity. It's a free world and no one is forcing anyone to watch anything. I don't know what the films gonna be like 'cos I haven't seen it so I'll reserve judgement until then.

I was asked to be an extra for this film, i could of kissed the chap who asked me, because he thought i looked young enough to do it, (dont say a word Webby laugh.gif )

But because i was moving house at the time, i could not make it.

I dont think it will appeal to everyone on here, but it may spark some interest in the younger generation, which would keep the scene going perhaps???

As for myself, i would enjoy watching the original footage, i cant say about the rest of the film, as i have not seen it, but i do think, when you try & re-create an event that happened, its never quite the same g.gif

Im glad i did not do it now! laugh.gif

Debbie x

Lots and lots of people were asked...it was a general subject on the internet....pete and I applied and they phoned us back.

filming went on for weeks....we had loads of fun and made alot of friends including some of the cast. Pete and some of his mates did a photo shoot outside for the local papers.... all again good fun...

the directors and producers and their teams were very friendly( and very patient with us untrained crowd LOL)

we and many others were asked back several times for different shots.....it was filmed over several months....which we enjoyed doing very much, and for the fun and new friends we made we have no regrets whatsoever....same as any film, you like it or you dont....not hard is it? lol rolleyes.gif

And yes it is true that to try to re create something that happened is very hard....but only those of us who attended the casino can ever be the true judges of that i guess?

Ian,I think part of the problem with RW is that he can be and is seen as a very rude man, ally that with having a very succesful career out ot the scene then he will brass people off,and as you know, the brits love nothing better than sniping at successful people.I accept your point about the Abadis and Chris etc, they too saw an opportunity and went for it.

Yes, maybe. But the guy wasnt ever really into the into the scene. Can you remember him at any of the great allnighters before Wigan? He's an embarrassment to us. Have you heard him talk on the radio? He's the reason the general public have the notion that we northern soulies are a bunch of silly tossers. Aint that right?

But he would probably argue that he earnt the right to claim some benefits from Wigan Casino. Fair play to the bloke. He put Wigan on the map didn't he?

It's seems like it's kinda fashionable to knock Russ and I think it's a bit unfair. He was the one who put a lot of energy into Wigan Casino. He started the biggest ever nighter in Northern Soul history from scratch and maintained for a huge amount of time. It outlasted Studio 54 for a start! laugh.gif

He had to pre-advertise the first night for months in Blues & Soul, set up a membership scheme, deal with all the applications and post the membership cards out, sort the sound system, book DJ's and keep the local coppers happy. He also gave regular guest spots to most of the DJ's at the time and dealt with the attendant politics pretty well I thought. He ran a huge all-nighter week in week out for years and arguably spawned a whole new generation of Northern Soul lovers.

So whatever anyone's views on his social graces or record selections, I reckon he has as much right as anyone else to consult on a project which features his creation.

This film is par for the course and probably to be expected. It's probably more akin to a UK version of "54" - the film based around Studio 54 then an accurate reflection of the scene. I just saw the trailer and personally I can probably take or leave it, but it's not aimed at me or a lot of the people on here. It's aimed the middle England audience so don't expect any miracles LOL....

It's a little UK film that'll probably make its costs back and appear on DVD in 6 months. Probably not to be taken too seriously......

Maybe it'll spur Paul on to make his own film? It could be very theraptic for him and then he could channel all his passion and energy into his own vision instead.

Good points well made Ian..............it must have been a monster of a job to organise Wigan,RW is probably unfortunate in that in some eyes he is seen as "The Bogey Man" that took what was a small close knit scene in small clubs where most people knew most people(if you see what I mean) to a huge club that was aimed at getting as many punters through the door as possible and yes exposing those people to N/S or whatever handle you want to put on the music. He was hugely succesful in what he did, but, like me,there were a lot of people that didn't like the direction that "the scene" was going in and stopped going.

I won't be watching the film in whatever format because it won't be MY reality. Each to their own,and no disrespect to anyone, but Bags,Baggies,Badges and Footsie were not and are not for me and represent a small moment in time many years ago.Yes Wigan was a big part of the scenes history...............................but it was only still a part, and RW a part of that part.

NO! What apologistic tosh Ian Dewhirst. Russ W. didnt 'put Wigan on the map', we did. He just took advantage of the then burgeoning scene, saw an opportunity for both financial and personal enhancement and became the ' big man' you obviously see him as. Me, I could'nt imagine anyone more inappropriate to represent our scene on film...but maybe you'd like to try.

Haha I don't think so. Plus I never saw Russ as a 'big man' either. It was fairly straightforward. He ran Wigan Casino and booked the DJ's, so whether you liked him or not, you still had to deal with him if you wanted to play the Casino. He ran a great nighter with over 100,000 members and numerous highly pleasurable nights throughout the 70's for a whole generation. He didn't take advantage of the scene - he provided a much-needed nighter venue at the time following the closure of the Torch and Va-Va's.

And for the record I never socialised with Russ or kept in contact. We had a pretty arms-length relationship but he was always OK with me so I've no reason to knock the bloke. I saw him for the first time in 30 odd years last year at the 100 club and he couldn't have been more pleasant. He's just a bloke who loves Soul Music and happened to run a highly successful venue for a decade. I can think of a zillion far worse characters than R.W......

From the film companies point of view, since they were covering a part of the Northern Soul scene in the early 70's, it probably made perfect sense to them to approach the guy who ran the largest venue over that period - I mean, he was there every night wasn't he.........?

Richard I'm here mate,if you read my last post,I have said I appreciate the amount of work that went into the Casino, but didn't like the direction it was driven. As with any business (and it was a business) that takes a drection that you(or we) do not like (for whatever reason) then the person in charge takes the flack,in this case RW is "known" as Mr Casino so he takes the plaudits or the Brickbats.

Some people think RW is a hero, others not,but what do I know,I'm just a punter.............................

There will always be people that will disagree with my opinions, because they see things from a different angle, some people think there was nothing before Wigan...................and don't get me started on the fancy dress.......................................

Steve.

And just to keep on thread,I don't think mocumentries will attract new blood to the scene.........as my teenage stepdaughter asked me when she came to a nighter with us---------Why are some people dressed like that Steve?................the musics great, but?

He's always been an easy target but I wish I'd have run such a successful venue over that length of time. I'm not saying that he's in any way shape or form a representative of today's scene but he was in a pretty unique position in the 70's so I don't blame him for accepting a role of consultant for a film based upon that era.............

Like I say, it's up to others to come forward to raise the finance and make a film that represents their point of view.

Has anyone on S.S. got a spare couple of million quid to put their vision on screen? Easier said than done I reckon.........

And with the greatest respect been there and done what................knows this scene inside out how?

I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just interested in how someone who has spent so much time and effort building her career (yes she is good at what she does)can know "This Scene" inside out

Ok "inside out" perhaps a bit strong (I've been around a few years and I know I don't have that level of knowledge so point taken). but Elaine unlike other producers / directors has done nighters on a regular basis for years, that's what I mean by been there and done it. She has a passion for the music and the scene and its that, that would drive a film which would get my attention. Whether she was at the Casino or not is not a deal breaker for me, knowing the crack is. and IMO she does.

I also know people on the scene who have built bloody good careers who attended nighters week in week out from the Casino, right through the 80s to the present day. Didn't stop them getting stuck in.

Guys

Don't forget that this film is not ALL about Wigan.

It's nearly a year since I went to one of the showings - but I am sure that less than half the film is at or directly associated with Wigan.

Apologies if my memory is playing tricks.

Can anyone else who went along say if I've got that roughly right.
