How about if all the people who think this work of fiction is crap before they have even seen it all get together have a whip round raise a couple of million quid write their own script and make their own film then they can cross all the 'T's and dot the 'I's themselves and make the perfect factual account or is it simply eaiser to rip the piss out of everything else?

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Hi Mark, Was thinking the same myself......Always easy to get things wrong, but get things totally right,....Don't think so????

He's just a hippy character who runs a record shop.

The kid who plays the lead roll goes into the shop in one fairly brief scene.

He certainly doesn't play a major part in the story line.

As I said before I did think the actor hammed it up a bit. But I am sure that is pretty much how most soulies looked on "the great unwashed" back in the early to mid 70's.

So all in all nothing to get too het up about.

mark - you were generally a man in the know - who is it that gets the rare soul on the tv - i heard holly st james on the documentaries about the british family two weeks back - is it somebody like clarkie - sure i remember him teaching media and marketing or was that just a dream

I would think it's more to do with someone at the production company who likes the music and suggests they use the tracks which seems possible when you consider how obscure even something like Laura Green is to someone who has never rubbed shoulders with the Northern scene.

The problem being that if you asked 100 people what happened on a particular night at a particular time you would get 100 different answers.

people can't even agree on what was worn

If all the people who said they went to venue x actually did you wouldn't have got them all in

Look at some of the posts about your first niter...................some of the posters would still have been in short pants

If the rose tinted specs are not removed then you will NEVER get a true version of what went on,never mind a half decent script and a good film.Treat it like a work of fiction,a puff job,and you wont be disappointed, take it seriously and you will.

The funny thing is despite all the opinion here I wager that pretty much everyone who has ever been involved with the scene will go and see this even if they don't admit to it or at the very least watch it when it goes to DVD. Bugger me some people got all excited when KFC used Frank Wilson, Laura Green etc. for their adverts or it's major news when a tune is used in a TV show or mentioned on Corrie so a movie good or bad will just be too much for people to ignore.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

hit the nail on the head there big fella, PROFILE with those adds...IF EVERYBODY WATCHES IT REGARDLESS OF OPINION...ITS A SUCCESS ANY WAY!...more than the mindless junk that the youth of today worship. you know when you look at QUAD it looks dated ( which is what it was meant to be ) and the acting, in places is wooden but its a LANDMARK that portrayed to the world what the mod culture was about.to a mod... it was saying...LOOK AT ME!!.

THIS SCENE OF OURS IS, WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BIGGEST CULT MUSIC MOVEMENT ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET AND ITS PLAYED ON EVERY CONTINENT, in the 70's the ugly scourge of journalism didnt do us any favours and tried to bury us as a fad...huh! and paul o'grady with misplaced reverance made us blush temporarily (cringe...oh no, not again! ) but as the dust settles again we relax, safe in the knowledge that the media has given us a more realistic and sharper focus, thanks to some clever marketing by....none other than northern soulies in suits with a substantial I.Q. plus, the compilers of cd s with attitude and sleevenotes to match....applause for ady, tony, tim and richard and last but not least, the sound emitted from the airwaves. so, weve had quad...now northern soul takes to celluloid....i used to love saturdays at the abc minors in walsall and a ZOOM and cheering on flash gordon!....THATS AN IDEA....WE CAN ALL STAMP OUR FEET FOR JENNY ELLISON WHEN SHE DOES A TWIRL!!

there are plenty of excellent film makers in the uk who could have got this right and do it justice like it deserves.

As mentioned earlier film makers tend to put the best clips on trailers so my impression of it based on watching the trailer would be pretty poor, but i could be wrong, does any one know if the clips of this england are in the finished film? wicked.gif

its interesting the whole debate-punters who visited generally had such affection for the place-its amazing that after 30 years the place is still at the centre of the debate-i visiited alot and lost my youth really, dont have a romantic view etc but do acknowledge that it was my right of passage "if not a bizzarre one".How do you judge the film is the question and what factors come into the equation.

firsTly you need to watch it-then the question is what level do you judge it on? on artistic merits -doubt it -on realism -highley unliely if the trailer is anything to go by?Is it just to say "we were part of the magig to our peers-family-etc,if so harmless on that level and as we all know "the scene is very nostalgic"mainly due to the fact we are in our 40s-50s and 60s.Wigan to me was blueys, petty crime, bunking school, adolescent crushes lol,but Then when the quality came via searling or should i say jOHN ANDERSON it became a SOUL REVOLUTION-A total obssession which still rages now "so how does that get reflected in a film "it simply does not",because it is potentially a light hearted lookat a certain period of history probably glammed up and tacky-might make you laugh but the question at the end of it to quote MALCOLM MACLAREN may be "DO YOU EVER FEEL THAT YOUVE BEEN CHEATED".or maybe this is our scene and we like it.I dont care because i wont rush to watch it -but deep down I know I will lol AT SOME POINT.

I had not been back to wigan since 81 had a week on a course and stayed in the hotel right near the shopping centre in November -visited the cafe and if that is the cultural legacy then we have failed miserably lol, because it is a costa with a few pics -and dancing to linda and funky boys near gregs really is ridiculous [this is only my view].I guess waht I am saying is that I really hope there is something to feel proud off in this film-something that tapS into the time on more than a superficial level -i have an open mind till I see it,but the trailer looks woeful -I am a film buff so maybe biased lol.

Finally the other famous club of the times was ofcourse the studio in NYC some class films have been made about that place and its mercurail owner -maybe potential futuure attempts should really get into the seedier side and be true to it,instead of f--king danCing in the bedroom and wide trousers!!!iF THE FILM DOES NOT SHOW THE FLOURESENT LIGHT THEN THATS ME BIASED I LOVED THAT LIGHT IT REALLY MADE MY TEETH AND SOCKS SHINE.LOL.

THe NEIL character is VERY overacted, hence my 'Carry ON Up THe Casino' analogy.

I guess for each, that period was different. I was one of the ordinary kids and for me it wasn't as cliched or crass as 'Souled Out' presents.

Its almost as if they have tried to make a 'feel good' formulaic Brit flick that will go BIG like ' Full Monty'.

But when people try too hard, its always a disaster. It has to be made from the heart and soul and with passion and knowledge and im afraid this film lacks all of those qualities.

Yes, I agree, but isn't the point with this film that it's been made to appeal to the mainstream (i.e. "civilians" biggrin.gif )!

Had it been made from the heart and soul and with passion probably the only people it would have appealed to would have been us lot on here g.gif

Posted

I knew a lot of people on here WOULD like it. Thats why these crap films keep getting made....no one really cares.

And for some, i think they experienced Wigan purely on a tourist basis...just like the film....so it is probably an accurate portrayal of their superficial involvement in Northern Soul at the time...which is fine. But to me, its a very 'Carry On' approach. Enjoy.thumbsup.gif

Have you seen it yet Paul ? all of it i mean

Posted (edited)

Yes, I agree, but isn't the point with this film that it's been made to appeal to the mainstream (i.e. "civilians" :D )!

Agreed..... It's just 'Saturday Night Fever UK', ie Working class boy with shitty job goes to night club - meets girl - dances - takes drugs - gets beaten up....

I wonder if the real club goers of Brooklyn complained their scene was never like the film?.......

Edited by Teapot

It's a trailer advertising a film.

The thing with advertising is that if it doesn't appeal to you then you can rest assured it isn't aimed at you.

Posted (edited)

I was asked to be an extra for this film, i could of kissed the chap who asked me, because he thought i looked young enough to do it, (dont say a word Webby  )

But because i was moving house at the time, i could not make it.

I dont think it will appeal to everyone on here, but it may spark some interest in the younger generation, which would keep the scene going perhaps???

As for myself, i would enjoy watching the original footage, i cant say about the rest of the film, as i have not seen it, but i do think, when you try & re-create an event that happened, its never quite the same :g:

Im glad i did not do it now!

does anyone else remember the ticking off we all got on soul source from the director over a year ago ! ?

AND WHO CAN FORGET THIS GREAT POST FROM STEVEM

quote

>>>1974. Power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the terraces. Flares,Chopper bikes and beer at fourteen pence a pint.

JOE MCCAIN, 17 and restless, is bored with the flatline tedium of a life that seems like it's going nowhere. Enter JANE, moving to the beat of a music that Joe's never heard, a vision of loveliness who opens the door to a whole world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino - the home of Northern Soul! Swept along on this tide of pulsating dance and lust, Joe finally finds somewhere he belongs and the acceptance and true love he yearns for.

Then, on the way back from Station Road, where he has been having secret ballet lessons, rather than boxing, he finds a kestrel chick. His best mate, played by Pete Postlethwaite, the brass band conductor and football coach tells him he's got a trial at Sheffield United and its his last chance or he'll end up down the pit like their Jud. While playing in an FA Cup semi final, suprisingly held at Uniteds own ground, he can't stop worrying about a bet he forgot to put on.

His football career over, he becomes a stripper with some mates. The kestrel meanwhile, gets caught smoking at school and is given the stick by the headmaster. Stripping leads to a chance to be enrolled in the Royal Ballet school, and he becomes a huge success as a swan, dancing at a brass band contest held outside a hospital.

His dad meanwhile, still has no furniture as he burned it in an unlikely North East Arctic winter and Thatcher wouldn't give him any dole, the cow.

A heartwarming tale of stereotypical Northern folk.<<<

Well I for one will be going to see as I was in it. If I havent been cut out I look pretty ridiculous in it and was made wear an awful looking beret.

If its a bit cringeworthy (like Quadrophenia) then Ill be the first to admit it. In that I was born the year the Casino opened and was 8 when it closed I wont be able to comment on the authenticity but the outfits on the set looked every bit as ridiculous and hideous as the footage and photos that Ive seen.

I just hope it doesnt create the kind of revival for Northern Soul that Quadrophenia did for the Mod thing. I couldnt handle going to allnighters and Soul event seeing teenagers in spencers and string vests with dodgy 7ts haircuts. Its bad enough at some venues as it is.

If we didn't know the story line, or the plot, or the romance angle. If the director and the producer hadn't been on this forum. If we hadn't seen any clips. If some of us hadn't appeared in the film and if some of us hadn't already seen it all the way through, then yes perhaps it would be wrong to cast the first stone. However that is not the case.

They could have had rockabilly or punk as a backdrop to this American financed love story. However Northern Soul is more hip at the moment, the ad men know this and so did these film makers. Just like with the Mc Gate ads that sold our wonderful music down the river for a few greaseball burgers... thmbdn.gif

Elaine Constantine did the Moloko short film. I may be wrong but I feel the Elaine Constantine film will have a lot more cred than this Souled Out effort. Again I may be proved wrong, just a feeling. Yes, we'll be able to pick holes in it but it just seems a bit more sincere to me.

You need to ignore the music and the fact it was based in a New York club, but still...

Why?

It's not 1975 anymore.

Who cares?

They can do a Blue peter appeal to rebuild Wigan casino for all I care.

Anything to get new people on the scene.

Pete, no it's not 1975 anymore and inevitably things have moved on. I suppose I look back on the days when, in general terms, NS was reasonably unheard of without the circus it's now become.

As for new people on the scene. Kids today are more used to completely different style of music than we were back in our youth. I remember regularly hearing Atlantic/Stax/Motown on the radio, local general discos etc and many of us picked up on it and that was the kinda music we liked. Different today of course and I suppose in one way media exposure will bring in some who will become diehard fans. Spreading "the faith" doesn't bother me, with the net there's enough exposure already for young folks to "click" onto Northern, or just soul in general.

If they want to go along to a local venue, take a looksee and decide if it's for them then all well and good.

I often wonder though if the scene wouldn't be better off with less people in it, a couple of niters, a few soul nights here and there but well attended by the committed instead of the 2 or 3 events in one town thing we have now. It always worked before.

I probably haven't expressed it as well I can think it but it's just my view mate thumbsup.gif

For the record, Butch is the musical supervisor on this project (www.northernsoulthefilm.com) and I know for a fact that Massive Attack have got nothing to do with it. Elaine is going to great lengths to secure rights to the original recordings, so those artists that are still able to do so will reap some benefits by their music being used in the film.
