My god! Just seen the trailer for the film 'SOULED OUT' and unfortunately, it is f--king horrendous....bad dancing, bad dialogue, line dancing northern, cliche rubbish, incorporating badly edited wigan dance footage. Bit like 'CARRY ON AT THE CASINO'.....what a pile of s--te.....as predicted...embarrassing!

When will non-scene people stop making crap films about it and when will people of the scene stop helping the twats!

Of course Binstanley was proud to be adviser...cant wait for the 'Hollyoaks' attempt...hes also adviser on that!

Can't really take it all in from them clips.. Nothing to really focus on for more than a second..

Don't get a good feeling from the advert or really have chance to see if it " really was dogshit"( Paul B's account after seeing the tester film last year)..

I will wait for feedback from the full film and then decide if i wanna see it..

The whole topic matter with regards to Northern soul would be a cult film heaven done well, the feedback so far aint giving much hope but the jury is out i guess..

We can wait for some members to get a viewing of the feature and then start to get an idea of its worth i guess..

I hope to god it aint as bad as Paul S makes out, i really really do.. If so they will have wasted a great chance to make a great British classic...

When is it gonna be out?????

Looks alright to me, a film with Northern Soul as it's "backdrop", looking forward to it.

Pete

Nicely summed up in one sentence.

I saw the whole film (close to the final version) about 10 months ago and I enjoyed it.

It's not particularly dark/underground - but let's face it there is a love story here running alongside the NS theme. I thought it caught the mood of the time pretty well. Ditto the angst of young love, the passion and the edgy side of NS.

For heaven's sake lets not get too PRECIOUS.

Oh well - roll on the release and the Soul Source poll.

If I have to crawl off and hide under the nearest stone so be it.

I knew a lot of people on here WOULD like it. Thats why these crap films keep getting made....no one really cares.

And for some, i think they experienced Wigan purely on a tourist basis...just like the film....so it is probably an accurate portrayal of their superficial involvement in Northern Soul at the time...which is fine. But to me, its a very 'Carry On' approach. Enjoy.thumbsup.gif

Should never have to hide Mike.. Its like anything, its all about opinions and all are valid..

Like other things, i will wait for some feedback when its comes out or private screening.. If the majority don't like it at all i won't waste my time as it will be on dvd before you know it..

I have some mates who took part and i will see what they think, they will not bull shit me.. They thought the screening last year was shite( to say the least) but now its gone back to the drawing board i guess and maybe they will change their minds.... We shall see..

The "Neil" character is in the film for all of about 30 seconds so in that respect the trailer is not really representative. I thought it was slightly over-acted but I was at college/uni in that era and trust me there were some "hippy" types I rubbed shoulders with who really did live up to that stereotype.

IMHO Northern Soul in the early 70's was mostly about ordinary kids with a passion.

This is a film about ordinary kids with a passion and I think it does the job.

It's not high art but that's no crime - esp. if that's not what you set out to make.

THe NEIL character is VERY overacted, hence my 'Carry ON Up THe Casino' analogy.

I guess for each, that period was different. I was one of the ordinary kids and for me it wasn't as cliched or crass as 'Souled Out' presents.

Its almost as if they have tried to make a 'feel good' formulaic Brit flick that will go BIG like ' Full Monty'.

But when people try too hard, its always a disaster. It has to be made from the heart and soul and with passion and knowledge and im afraid this film lacks all of those qualities.

It's just that my favourite films are British films, especially ones set in the 60's and 70's. Anything that can recreate that period I'll watch whether it's any good or not. I mean, has anyone ever seen Velvet Goldmine and enjoyed it?

. . . . hence my 'Carry On Up The Casino' analogy.

It might be a thousand things.

But Carry On Up The Casino it isn't.

It simply isn't!!

Are the "This England" clips part of the finished film? Take the point about NS as the backdrop to a young love story but do get embarrassed when these things start to look like a documentary with the confused standpoint of portraying fictional characters in an historical setting. Just have to see it I suppose although suspect I'll be looking through open fingers. Can't wait for the gritty drug references, perhaps there's room for a sequel, "4 Nighters and a Funeral". My biggest fear is that bags will be back in fashion and I'll have to stop laughing at those who wear them.

Are the original clips gonna be in the film or is that just for the trailor???

Sorry Stevie, typing as you were posting. By the way I don't think anything for ages has captured the continued passion for the music and surrounding scene as your brief Channel 4 contribution did.

For what it's worth i think it looks alright.

It's not a documentary or an Oscar contender but to be fair most of us got involved when we were kids as it was the 'thing to do' at the time and a great laugh. We fell in love with the scene and all that goes with it and it's only now, looking back, that maybe we take the scene and our part of it so seriously.

We recognise the inaccuarcies whether they're as a result of our selective memories, inaccuracies in the research or whatever but most of the people who'll see the film couldn't care less and if just a few percent of them come to love the music then it's a win.

I don't expect many welders think Flashdance was particularly factual but still a good film!

Haven,t seen it yet Paul but defo trust your take on these things, sadly I reckon as you have stated that whenever the scene comes under the spotlight the incorrect perception is always displayed. So, it will carry on that, whenever you go to a birthday bash or an engagement do etc, and the DJ says "and now for some northern soul" and then proceeds to play "Nine times out of ten" and "3rd finger left hand", someone will turn to you and say "you are into all this stuff aren,t you", well we know where they are getting their assumptions from again.

No you started it.....You went to The Torch! laugh.gif

What perturbs me about the trailer for " SO " , is that it - like a lot of trailers for films - contains the best bits from it , and the rest will be unfortunately be lack lustre and well below par .

" SO " will be , and deliver what a person wants out of - pure and simple .

The alarm clock at the beginning and the bog scene at 1.28 I did find authentic thumbsup.gif

As for most of the rest of it, puke. Don't think I'll be making a special journey to watch it, and if I do I'll be wearing a dirty old raincoat with the collar turned just like I do when visiting the local porno palace laugh.gif

It's all f'king circus.

well i reckon....

yes it will be a bit cheesy, embarressing and factually wrong in places.....like ALL 'themed' films are and will have to have a story behind it or its a documentary !

quodrophenia had all these faults but i still enjoyed it and overall i think it was good for the scooter scene and i hope this will be too for the soul scene after all enuff people on here reckon it will be dead soon without youngblood so lets hope this gets some in..

He's just a hippy character who runs a record shop.

The kid who plays the lead roll goes into the shop in one fairly brief scene.

He certainly doesn't play a major part in the story line.

As I said before I did think the actor hammed it up a bit. But I am sure that is pretty much how most soulies looked on "the great unwashed" back in the early to mid 70's.

So all in all nothing to get too het up about.

ive not seen any trailer despite knowing about the production but it already seems that its delay in going to the big ( or small ) screen would suggest perhaps even its sponsors may have been a bit sheepish about its originality and continuity but ,its all about not judging a book by its cover. im no fan of shameless and frank were on radio t'other day and he sounded boring then but i do remember people having longish hair at wigan so thats a myth. tell you what though...when messrs. croasdell, burton and the dublin bhoy get on the stage its "the comedians" all over again...its good to lighten up!.

How about if all the people who think this work of fiction is crap before they have even seen it all get together have a whip round raise a couple of million quid write their own script and make their own film then they can cross all the 'T's and dot the 'I's themselves and make the perfect factual account or is it simply eaiser to rip the piss out of everything else?

Come on Stevie, you know you'll go and see it even if all your mates tell you it's pants. It's our pants and the only Northern related film to come out since "Blue Juice" so let's not kid ourselves we won't be paying out 7 shillings and 6 pence at the foyer.

Well you don't know me then Ady... Would i bother if it gets slated.... No chance.... why waste my time...

It would be out on dvd before you know it i guess..

With you all the way there,Mark!!

The funny thing is despite all the opinion here I wager that pretty much everyone who has ever been involved with the scene will go and see this even if they don't admit to it or at the very least watch it when it goes to DVD. Bugger me some people got all excited when KFC used Frank Wilson, Laura Green etc. for their adverts or it's major news when a tune is used in a TV show or mentioned on Corrie so a movie good or bad will just be too much for people to ignore.
