ImberBoy Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 JOE 90 RON GRAINER ORCHESTRA Guess what, I like this track! Yup I'm out, I am a Divvy. Did you dance to this in the casino days? Some one had to? It didn't clear the floor so who danced and the million dollar question is.............. would you dance to this at a nighter? Would you dare play this at a nighter? If not why not, it aint the worst track played. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9hMTC9NusM
Pete S Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Ron Grainer is a cover version - the original is by Barry Gray from the TV show. I love it, but only because my little boy likes to watch Joe 90 on dvd. As a northern record it's a disgrace and was literally started as a joke by dave McCadden.
Guest Nick Harrison Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 As a northern record it's a disgrace and was literally started as a joke by dave McCadden. And almost as trashy was the Teddy Vanns Orchestra -Theme From Colouredman on Capitol (IMHO). So defo a "big no" to all of the above questions Simon.

Mach Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) Yep!..was Guilty, mi sen ,..young and naive..( still ave affection for it though) Edited January 25, 2010 by Big Chris
Harrythedog Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I remember well hearing this for the first time on a saturday night at the Casino. I knew then that the game was up and the sooner the Casino shut the better.
Guest Matt Male Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) Surley I'm not dancin on me own? I like it, but because it reminds of when i was a kid, i never heard it at Wigan. Like all these type of records it was a time and a place thing. I still have affection for Murial Day - Nine Times Out Of Ten and openly admitted the other week i like Barnaby Bye - Can't Live This Way. It's about nostalgia and memories of when we were young and carefree i reckon. Not a bad reason in my opinion. Ron Grainer's not a patch on the Barry Grey original though. Zed1 Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 i like it too part & parcel of going to the casino Agreed, it's all to easy to look back with hindsight and slag off these type tracks (which seems a popular passtime on this board) yet love them or loath them, they were part of the scene - and lets remember Wigan had no monopoly on crap records - it just makes an easier target, sadly.

Agreed - but when a Promoter/DJ at the venue releases the record on a label called "Casino Classics" that doesn't really do Wigan any favours does it ?
Zed1 Posted January 30, 2010 Posted January 30, 2010 Agreed - but when a Promoter/DJ at the venue releases the record on a label called "Casino Classics" that doesn't really do Wigan any favours does it ? I'll more than agree with your agreement, however many of these tracks were happily played before and after at other venues yet you'd think Wigan invented all of them reading some of the stuff posted on here. It seems a popular point scoring exercise with some on this board that as soon as anyone mentions the 'W' word you have to immediately pounce and state "Wigan went crap after Footsee, This England, Casino Classics, Mod invasion" (insert relevent excuse). Yes!, there were some crap tracks played, but these were a few small flies in a very large jar of fantastic ointment - just because you continued to go to Wigan after 77 it doesn't mean you're some kind of knuckle dragging neanderthal who only went to Station Rd to dress up in comedy trousers and worship at the alter of Frank Wilson.

Guest Little Anthony Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Remember being on the dance floor when I heard it come in for the first time thinking "This sounds familiar" then realsising what it was and retiring to the stage. Another example of the dross that Winstanley associated himself with...along with Time out, the Wigan Joker and much of the stuff released on Casino Classics. Most people I know still want to thrash him to within an inch of his life..and then thrash him again for having the arrogance to subject us to this dross then trying to line his pockets by selling it under the description 'Northern Soul'.....tosser!
Wiganer1 Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 hey dont forget brad stevens - now im your number one..

I seem to remember all these records being floor packers, so the majority must have rated em. Another you`ll like...mistura / flasher I don't mind stuff like Teddy Vann.. a 'monster' when I first started going, but Joe 90 and songs 'specially recorded in a garage near Wigan' was taking the piss!..In actual fact, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that he'd lost the plot and was actually just taking the piss to see how far he could go!
Agentsmith Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 joe 90 part of our childhood, played theme tune at mod disco's....ken knows that and by barry gray. lord sitar booted by soussan but original capitol issue. cochise?...huge!, footsie ....soussan even did an acetate with car horns on and no world cup crowd!. pop records galore all points north, south, east and west and for how many years? and we castigate r n b....our scene evolves like the gaudi in barcelona and it feels like its been around for centuries.....dont you just love it!. dance to the music?...we did at stoke nye to sly & the family stone, dance floor rammed, 1000 people cant be wrong?, well done dave.e. fast forward connie stevens....yes, youve heard this one already on SS but richard,s given it his stamp of approval and he's no schmuck!...see, were still finding them now. oh, and talking about theme tunes, here's one to make pete.s's neck hairs stand on end, and wednesfield man...."locke's theme" by bob's band on atco and tho' you want to hang winstanley high, he played that at the casino!. rob.h

Good reply. It seems that a hell of a lot of people stopped going to the Casino in 77/78, it must of hit a bad patch musically to send people away. Such a shame really as the best sets were in 79/ 80. (Searling). You missed out! Joe 90! Great to watch on the telly when we were kids. Shit as a record, come on!
Agentsmith Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 im having an arkwright attack ken....IIIIIIIIITS THE WRONG FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFLAMING TRACK GRANVILLE...PPPPPPPPAINT IT BLLLLACK YER DOPEY APETH! ROB.H
Paul R Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 First time I heard Joe 90 at a Northern night was around 74 at the Geraldo Club in St Helens. Can't remember the DJ, Dave something I think. played it for a laugh. Also the Kid was mentioned, Surely a Wheel sound? Paul

Paul Paul You may be right about The Kid but surely Joe 90 wasn't played as early as 74 - still big on the TV then wasn't it? Anyway, on the subject of instrumentals, it's a very thin line between s***e & 'right on' isn't it? To wit: Bari Track Harlem Rumble Frantic Escape etc...... Mick
