Sheepherders For $2400?

I see that the Sheepherders "If You Ever Need Me" sold for $2400 and change. Is this a realistic price? Is this a really big record at the moment?

This doesn't surprise me at all. Very rare, great and indemand. I first played this out at the Drunken Monkey some 5 or 6 years ago, since then its been picked-up and pushed the likes Steve G, Maria and Carl and one or 2 of the US boys. So realistic??... on balance, I'd say yes.

1st heard this on the OL' VIRGINIA SOUL compilation cd and considering it was back in 2004 this record has taken it's time to surface.

Apart from the few that Tia pan mentions who have been playing it ,a fellow N.east collector picked oune up recently,how much for i don't know.

Is it worth that price...why not ..it's rare soul and has al the ingredients to fill a dancefloor ,unlike some expensive rarities .

I watched it with interest and maybe because the seller had other more well known big 45's up for auction ,Melvin Brown and Martells(all in great condition) ,this was a tad overlooked.

He did however do his homework and put soundfiles up ,but at that price i would well assume it's gone to someone who already knew it and it's potential .

Sleeve notes from the cd make for some interesting reading.....the band made up of a white backing with a black frontman ,were all very young .

It was a miracle they got to perform ,because they had to get past the strict rule of performing as minors in a club tha tsold acohol.

Gigging on a night and having to drive 4 hrs to get back to school the next morning.

To re-iterate ....it was very slow in reaching that price ...the Martells and Melvin Brown rose in price a lot earlier before they peaked.

I looked at it 100 times over the week ,with a view to having a punt ,whereas i never cared for the other two overrated piles of sh**e

I have noticed over the years that this seller always achieves top end prices for whatever they are selling.

Full marks for their excellent ebay sales presentation...this obviously works.

Massive demand on it, I must of had half a dozen enquiries about it over the last year, as I told them I've never seen one, never mind had one.

I'm not surprised it went so high. Personally can take it or leave it.

The 'Sheepherders Ft Bubba Bailey' is brilliant, I have hammered away with this for some years (although I'm sure someone mentioned to me once that this had limited plays at Stafford TOTW ?), it took me a while to get my copy, whilst living in Virginia & it was sourced via my friend who does the Ole Va Soul comps (must get in touch), I think it may have even come via a group member. The Sheepherders also recorded as the Royalle VII on Windmill & the Newport News on RCA. The Sheepherders track is of course the only 'black' lead vocal with Bubba Bailey, the line up was very transcient & was a college band I believe. Its a real belter of a dancer & I'm very pleased, that it is eventually getting some recognition. Virginia has some brilliant out put soul wise & the VA comps helped get some of the lesser known Funk n Soul gems a wider appreciation. Well, done Brent my man, I know they were a labour of love, but hey, they were worth it buddy.

I bought my copy from a collector here in England circa 2002, he said it was a potential Ambassadors C/U, I forgot to cover it when I first played it at Mike H's (Mr Soul-Source) Drunken Monkey soul gig in North Wales, the rest is history. It is good and very soulful, not dirty and raw, but brassy and crisp.... nice. So there you have it. ATB
