Pete S Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 (edited) THE TOP 100 NORTHERN SOUL OLDIES OF ALL TIME - AS CHOSEN BY ME. IT GETS LONELY SITTING HERE AT HOME GAZING OUT OF THE WINDOW SO TO KILL SOME TIME I DECIDED TO GET ALL MY OLD FAVOURITE RECORDS OUT AND SEE IF I COULD PUT THEM IN SOME ORDER OF FAVOURITISM. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT TASK AS THERE ARE SO MANY ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT NORTHERN SOUL RECORDS TO CHOOSE FROM - BUT I'VE HAD A GO AND COME UP WITH A TOP 100. ANYWAY, I THOUGHT I COULD TURN THESE INTO A 4 OR 5 EPISODE SERIES OF PODCASTS AND IT MIGHT BE FUN FOR PEOPLE TO LISTEN IN AND MAYBE GUESS WHAT'S COMING NEXT, WHAT'S IN THE TOP 10, AND HOW **** MY TASTE IN MUSIC IS. SO I DID IT, AND THE FIRST 20 TRACKS ARE NOW AVAILABLE TO LISTEN TO AS A PODCAST. REMEMBER, IT'S JUST A BIT OF FUN, THEY ARE JUST MY FAVVOURITE RECORDS, IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE SOME KIND OF OFFICIAL CHART! I ALSO ADDED A FEW 60'S RADIO JINGLES FOR NO REASON REALLY. PLEASE, ENJOY! WILL POST THE NEXT 20 UP VERY SOON. HERE IS THE LINK - PLEASE NOTE, THEY DO NOT USUALLY WORK WITH INTERNET EXPLORER! https://planetrecords.podbean.com/2010/01/22/the-top-100-northern-soul-oldies-part-1/ NUMBERS 100 TO 81 100 RAY CHARLES - I DON'T NEED NO DOCTOR (ABC) 99 RITA & THE TIARAS - GONE WITH THE WIND IS MY LOVE (DORE) 98 STEMMONS EXPRESS - WOMAN LOVE THIEF (KARMA) 97 LESLIE UGGAMS - DON'T YOU EVEN CARE (ATLANTIC) 96 SOUL BROTHERS INC. - PYRAMID (GOLDEN EYE) 95 REPARATA & THE DELRONS - PANIC (MALA) 94 SAXIE RUSSELL - PSYCHEDELIC SOUL (THOMAS) 93 MARION STEWART - I MUST BE LOSING YOU (R RECORDS) 92 TOBI LEGEND - TIME WILL PASS YOU BY (MALA) 91 RUFUS LUMLEY - STRONGER THAN ME (RCA) 90 JOE JAMA - MY LIFE (OPTIMUM) 89 POOKIE HUDSON - THIS GETS TO ME (JAMIE) 88 THE HIGH KEYS - LIVING A LIE (VERVE) 87 THE EMBERS - WATCH OUT GIRL (MGM) 86 CHECKERBOARD SQUARES - DOUBLE COOKIN' (VILLA) 85 THE DYNAMICS - I NEED YOUR LOVE (RCA) 84 COURT DAVIS - TRY TO THINK WHAT YOU'RE DOING (EAST COAST) 83 LILLIE BRYANT - MEET ME HALFWAY (TAY-STER) 82 EMANUEL LASKEY - I'M A PEACE LOVING MAN (THELMA) 81 EDDIE DAY & THE FOUR BARS - GUESS WHO LOVES YOU (SHRINE) Edited January 22, 2010 by Pete S
Blunny Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 You're a braver man than me. Never been able to settle on a top 20 never mind 100. Constantly moving tunes up and down, removing some and adding others. REMEMBER, IT'S JUST A BIT OF FUN, THEY ARE JUST MY FAVVOURITE RECORDS, IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE SOME KIND OF OFFICIAL CHART! Well said, still might be worth getting your tin hat on though

I think there is one 70's record, if Mel britt is a 70's record..

Pete S Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 enjoyed part one pete, nice one for spending your time doing it bring on the next chapter Cheers, I'll put it up in a couple of hours, I included this great radio advert featuring Lee Dorsey singing an advert for Coca-Cola to the tune of his record "My old car", just makes it slightly more interesting..
Pete S Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 that's Kev Roberts job isn't it? wonder if he will rewrite the top 500 again now! I thought his book was brilliant. The second one was a bit pointless but the first one is a great read.

Guest Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 I thought his book was brilliant. The second one was a bit pointless but the first one is a great read. I liked the photos and the scans and a lot of the info was interesting but the copy I have has clearly not been proof read as there are typos, spelling mistakes etc all over the place...Let's it down when it looks so good visually. The other thing is all those quotes from Soul fans on each of the 500....If you are used to reading scripts professionally, you get to recognise the 'voice' of an author or writer very quickly and a lot of those quotes are coming from the same vocabulary!

Absolutely. I'm quoted in there raving on about a record I don't like that much! But I could look at pictures of record labels all day.
