Weingarden Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 Just found it yesterday: Jeanette Nellis, Let's Get Together/Wait (Chess 1855) It's from 1963, according to the discography. Two pretty excellent early soul/R&B sides. Not completely mind-blowing, but very solid; what IS mind-blowing is that a very good Chess 45 could be so seemingly obscure. Google brings up the Chess discography and that's it. No playlists, no sales sites, no compilations, no nothing. Anyone know anything about it? Thanks, M
Weingarden Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 Not completely mind-blowing Okay, I take this back. Upon further listening, I find both sides to be awesome. I'll try to post clips Monday.
Weingarden Posted January 18, 2010 Author Posted January 18, 2010 Here are short clips of both sides: DivShare File - let_s get together.mp3 DivShare File - wait.mp3
Tommy1 Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Gee, tough crowd! Sorry mate, didn't see this post before now. She sounds white? The best side for me is "Lets get together", but I'm at "not completely mind-blowing" after a couple of listenings
Weingarden Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 Thanks for giving it a listen, Tommy. She doesn't sound white to me, but who knows.
purist Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Never knew it before you posted this up. I think they're both good sides and would buy a copy. Thanks for posting !
KevH Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Gave "Wait" a couple of listen's via wfmu,great track.!! On the r'n'b side,but i'll have one if there's a spare..reminds me a little of Thelma Lindsey...prepared to love you..in parts...
sostenuto Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Now that did make me laugh; 'reminds me a little of Thelma Lindsey...prepared to love you..in parts' .......can't hear that at all. Seriously, you should ask the Belgians, who like that Popcorn sound and have done for years, if they know it. Most folk here in Britain are soul-laden and would bypass that sort of 45.

Glad you liked my post. Should clarify - parts of the vocal reminded me of Thelma Lindsey.Popcorn maybe, but what's in a name?
sostenuto Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 The genre 'Popcorn' describes a certain type of music, such as the record in question. Thelma Lindsey is so obviously Northern, so I couldn't see your connection between the two.
boba Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I liked the record (at least one of the sides), sounded definitely Black to me.

sostenuto Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 Your original quote was: "reminds me a little of Thelma Lindsey...prepared to love you..in parts" That's what I was commenting upon, your comparison of this Popcorn record and Thelma Lindsey, which is a archetypal Northern record. Your most recent comments suggest that NOW you're commenting on her vocal style. Popcorn or Northern doesn't come into it.I was commenting on what i thought was a similar vocal style.

You're trying to make something out of nothing here.I think you're implying i dont know the difference between this record and "Prepared to love you".!!!!. A year or so on here we could have had a slagging match,if that's what you are after. But not now."This here guy is now a changed man". If you want a debate about Popcorn, start a thread,i'm not interested.
Ady Croasdell Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Anyone got a sound file of Lets Get Together? I couldn't get this to work. Ta Ady
Ady Croasdell Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 PS I like Wait and it sounds black to me. Bobby Dunn seems to have been a gospel writer mainly. In 1963 the soul sound wasn't so accentuated on records.
The Phantom Janitor Posted September 20, 2016 Posted September 20, 2016 Heard this quite a few years ago now, been after a copy ever since but never seen one for sale, don't think it's in any of the price guides, wait is the best side for me. 1
Weingarden Posted September 21, 2016 Author Posted September 21, 2016 A few have turned up since my original post. Still love both sides.

Weingarden Posted September 21, 2016 Author Posted September 21, 2016 Played it here, Ady: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/52533
Ady Croasdell Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Thanks Matt I'll try it on Friday, couldn't work it today!
