Sean Hampsey Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Sean and Imberboy thats the baby - used to love this - would this be an anthem? It was certainly a BIG record mid 70's. Played when new and very little since, ( thankfully... ) so not really 'anthemic' status. Sean

Patto Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 4 BELOW ZERO --- MY BABYS GOT E.S.P. https://www.youtube.c...h?v=g2Vyq_Ycr3M One of my alltime faves this Simon, simply have to dance to it.These uptempo type 70s ANTHEMS are just as much NORTHERN SOUL as the 60s oldies.Venues that played these 70s dancers mixed in with the oldies were places like Cleggy Winter Gardens,Rotherham Clifton Hall,Manchester Ritz, and many more 80s venues. For me the perfect formula to a great Northern Soul night is 5 classic oldies followed by a couple of underplayed lesser known oldies, then followed by 3 or 4 70s spins. You can't beat a good accross the board night with 60s 70s played together in the main room summat for everyone , different dance styles on show with no bias to any era.

Pete Eccles Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Is it just me that sees this thread as a list of mostly 70's tunes that have been played for decades in rooms that arn't a modern room? I'm not really into modern so very rarely enter a modern room, but have heard most of these tunes (and own a lot of em) countless times played out, Anyone liking a lot of these tunes and venturing to an up-front modern room/venue expecting to hear a few, might be a tad disappointed methinks, I know it says 'anthems' but does a 30+ year old anthem that has long since crossed over to most ATB rooms still come under 'modern' (and I don't mean modern as in up to date) in 2010? Not being cynical just a little confused, are we just saying most stuff recorded after '69 is classed as modern?
Bully Boy Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 great tune but not as good as..way of lifes version What Planet You On......... Mavis Staples could fart it better

ImberBoy Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 As soon as this thread gets tired and we have listed a fair whack of tunes I will copy them all to a list. Sean and Dave, we can pick out those tracks that don't fall into the "Modern" category just as long as we don't just end up with three tracks from 2010 lol, its always going to challenge the purists version of "Modern" but nevertheless we could do with a list if for nothing less than posterity. As soon as we get a list out how are we going to put them in order of popularity? Suggestions please. I remember Richard's Jazz FM program asking for votes to compile the Kev Roberts Top 500, I'll get some advise from Kev? I cant see us getting 500 but 50 or 100 will give a datum point. ImberBoy Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 I just knew that this would end up with a bun fight over what is "Modern" and what is not, look the start of this thread quite clearly states what I am trying to do and that is a Modern list of anthem type tracks rather like Kev Roberts top 500. For those who can't, won't or are just too pseudo trendy to list a few track then why not fook off and start another thread called "I'm too up my self to have a bit of fun" Now for those who want to help compile the list then please feel free to add your track listing here. Daved Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) As much as I admire the concept, I don't think your list is going to be representative Simon. Half of the tracks posted are now deemed to be acceptable in northern rooms. This generally means that once that's happened they stop being modern, as NS is a retro scene. I know it hasn't always been the case - Cleethorpes, Mecca being prime examples but those place don't exist any more as far as NS gigs are concerned. Edited January 9, 2010 by daved

For god's sake, why do these threads which are great fun always get ruined by these semantics and impossibly convoluted babble. Everybody knows that the original 'modern' sound was one that featured/highlighted the 70s influence and then moved on from there, so when it comes to an 'Anthems' thread, anything from the 70s onwards is acceptable in a 'modern' definition. Lighten up, Man.
Guest Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) This is just so good, it has to make the top 500... Bollocks, anybody up for giving me a Techno Retards guide to 'how you post a track up' here??? Edited January 9, 2010 by chorleysoul
Daved Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) Lighten up, Man. That's a bit rich coming from you, isn't it? Actually I'm pleased that some post 60s music is getting some good exposre in a thread like this. It's just a laugh really, but I don't think a list of modern anthems that has 95% of its content recoreded in the 70s is representative. Pete B and Sean H seem to be the only ones reaching beyond the northern/modern or normodern as Dodger called it. Edited January 9, 2010 by daved

Guest Dirk Tiggler Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Great thread Imberboy, it's made me realise I like modern stuff more than I thought. My contribution would be "You can come right back to me" David Ruffin. Don't know if it's suitable for your list, but if it is, stick it on. Don't suppose anyone can post it up? Cheers Ade
