Modern Anthems

Back in the day, well my day any way, most Northernsoul tracks where unknown by the great unwashed, now that was a shame as the music is mega and most people would enjoy the tunes that have become classics and anthems.

When the CD collections happened it allowed our music to be heard effortlessly and we now have well known and loved anthems that capture our imaginations and get us dancing or at least tapping our feat.

Yes we can all get snobby about this, I am the worlds worst offender but lets put these things to a side for a while and list the Modern Anthems, I hope we can do this without getting bogged down in the "It aint Modern coz it's old" argument.

If we list some of the better known, well loved danceable Modern tracks here then we may get more people peeping into the Modern Rooms or just listening and enjoying.

I'll start with a couple of my faves from over the years:

The Dells - Your Song

Lou Rawls - See You When I Get There

Thelma Houston - Saturday Night, Sunday Morning

These are all available on youtube and they make me smile and dance, I hope you enjoy them and I hope this list will be added to so we can all expand our minds in a expanding kinda way.

Maysa's version of the The Bottle is on a CD called "All My Life" on Expansion. Excellent CD. Mirrors and Hooked on Your Love are also supern tracks on it.

As for modern anthems, I guess it would be stuff like:

Sean Oliver - You & Me

Maxwell - Ascension

Ann Nesby - In The Spirit

George Benson - When Love Comes Calling

Cheryl Lynn - Sweet Lind of Life

Jaheim - Just In Case

Ron Carroll - Back Together

E-Smoove - Deja Vu

Al Green - Keep On Pushing Love

Dazz Band - You Are My Starship

Ivan Matias - Somebody Knows How You Feel

Angie Stone - Wish I Didn't Miss You

Jill Scott - Golden

Kindred The Family Soul - As Of Yet

Next - Wifey

Michael Cooper - Stepping To A Love Song

Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (steppers remix)

Tashan - After Hours

Maysa - Friendly Pressure

Earth, Wind & Fire - Can't Hide Love (MAW remix)

Luther Vandross - Are You Using Me

April Hill - The Search

Mary J. Blige - Be Happy

C-Nario - Body Fusion

Hil St. Soul - Alright

D'Influence - Magic / Taste of Bitter Love

Impromp2 - Give It Up

The O'Jays - Imagination

James Day - Don't Waste The Pretty

Donald McCollum - U Don't Want My Love

Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight

R. Kelly - Step In The Name of Love

These have all been hammered by DJ's (some way too much lol) and filled dancefloors over the last 15 or so years.

Great call!

I am going to list all of these and then see 9f we can put them into some batting order like The Kev Roberts list.

Keep adding em but try to avoid being too high brow, we don't just want a list of Modern tracks, lets get the definite top 500 if possible? It may only be the top 100 or 50, lets give it a whirl.

Simon, are you after creating a list of modern tracks that are more than 30 years old?
