Dave Abbott Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) just been playing some old records and put "the esquires listen to me" on was it covered up and if so what as and who by? absolutely brilliant - the best £1. i spent last year - or many a year come to that (and i have played it out...) i believe it was covered up "Flights of Fantasy" i think... Dave Abbott Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 p.p.s I'm not saying i believe in Guy Hennigan as some sort of idol - or that i have mentioned him before and am now doing again. what i mean is that i think it was him that covered it under that name because i heard it last year as that then went and bought the thing. just wanted to clear my beliefs up.
Ian Williams Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 absolutely brilliant - the best £1. i spent last year - or many a year come to that (and i have played it out...) i believe it was covered up "Flights of Fantasy" i think... Loads of copies on the bay for less than a tenner!

Sebastian Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 It was a nice surprise when I realised that the exact same recording of "When I'm Ready" that was issued as a Mill Evans 45 on TOU-SEA is included on that Esquires album. One side of his CONSTELLATION label 45 is also on the LP.

45cellar Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) GOT A NICE WHITE DEMO OF THIS ONE. NOT THAT COMMON EITHER DAVE Hi Dave Appears to be true of most of The Esquires Stuff on Bunky. Guessing there's West Coast & East Coast Variations too. Either way, there can't have been many DEMO's made for some reason, compared to the Stock Copies. This is the only Esquires Bunky DEMO that I have. ESQUIRES - AND GET AWAY - (Soundclip from Refosoul Archive) Edited January 9, 2010 by 45cellar

Benji Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 When was it covered up?,this used to get plays at Cliff Steels do`s in N/hton back in the 80s,can`t really see the point if it was a recent cover up,but hey thats just my opinion Dave f........ I have a tape from the Great Yarmouth weekender radio station in 1990 and Guy H. plays it covered. Tho I have the feeling he wasn't really serious about it and meant it more tongue in cheek.

Louise Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 The Esquires other Wand release, often over looked is worth checking out. "I Don't Know/Part Angel Wand 1195 two really nice sides. In response to Val's post that we don't hear records like this enough, sadly the uptown soul sound is out of vogue in England at present, maybe time for a change. Dave.W
Anais nin Carms Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Eeem you got one of these for a fiver Toad nice one When I split from Brian and we negotiated who was having which records a few years back he charged me 50 bloody quid for this , mind you I would pay that today for such a great sound. I too picked up the Lp quite some time back and found every track a gem , no one has mention girls in the city yet ?

In response to Val's post that we don't hear records like this enough, sadly the uptown soul sound is out of vogue in England at present, maybe time for a change. Dave.W Brought "I don't know" back about 78 from a local shop. Was suprised then to hear the version by the Prime Ministers spun by Gary Spencer about 91/92? for a while, as it isn't a patch on the Esquires version. Reviewed "How could it be" in issue 12 of Soul Renaissance, and heard out recently somewhere like the Attic or Disciples of Soul? Sounded brilliant.

KevH Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I'd love to hear more too ....dj's ?? It depends on the venue, what time the dj is on,wether its a nighter etc.,or just a soul night. But i'm sure the more individual nites play this kinda soul.
