Now that is good value for money!!! Only one i'd challenge is your first batch of 70's as Billy Cee pushes it to £55-60 (imho!) but i'll let you off Cheers Steve

Steve Plumb Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I think the Plumby price check should have its own topic .. Like a reverse antiques roadshow type of format Telling folks their records are worth more than they think and them being disappointed cos they failed in the £50 challenge
pikeys dog Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 can't understand why Contract on Love doesn't get more plays- a great early Stevie RnB tune . Only usa 45 release ? Nope, came out on a french 3 track 45/EP on 707 Records, and on Canadian Tamla as well. Poossibly on at least one more French/European EP/45
Douglaschip Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 question.... i just got the superlatives. i think "lonely in a crowd" is pleasant enough - but the flip ("i don't know how (to say i love you) don't walk away") is AMAZING. am i the only one who thinks it totally outshines the A-side? Check out Carl Carltons version of don't walk away on Backbeat - also fantastic!!! Best Adam
De-to Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 dave love, colalined baby,on solid-soul you can buy it for a tenner plus,a great old mecca tune with the inst on the b-side,imo quality for £10 ish,
Ljblanken Posted January 12, 2010 Author Posted January 12, 2010 This topic could have a forum of its own... 5 tunes so close to my heart... And oh soul full of what i like in soul music.. Ural thomas... Pain is the name of your game.. for the folk who like the deep deep soul, the vocal will knock your socks off.. I call these tunes " the wrist slashers", me and Nick Hacket delight in these after a long weekend... flip side... Since you went away is also a firm choice of a few folk, nice ballad, fatastic voice indeed with sweet flute intro.. ( a Richard Bergman special ) Fab Traits.... Love is strange, monster soul funk track that i have played for many many years.. Then i only flipped it over a coujple of years ago and found one of the sweetest deep soul sides ever called Lonely man( another top wrist slasher ).. Take away the Tams.... quality early Soul/ RnB TRACK thats caught many folk out.. played this to many who have it and had not flipped it over.. The big A- SIDE is Hey Girl don't bother me.. Bill Withers... Harlem..... Another b-side of epic proportions... As folk say, hear it out loud, it just builds and builds and builds, a true delight.. The A side needs no introduction.. Betty Swan... My heart is closed for the season.... Once played this to a guy in LA and he fell off his chair.. Picked himself up and was offering me a blank cheque for a copy.. Told him to do a little search and left it at that.. He contact me to say that he found a copy for £5.. I could name a thousand more... Just dig deep into them boxes and find quality tunes that aint been battered to death and go for silly cash.. Its great to see certain events can now feature tunes like these.. That lot should be about £50 or less if you dig around... Got a few off the lists above in the last few days.. Thanks so much for the info on quality/ cheap tuuuuunes.. steve x good list! i got another ural thomas (can you dig it/i'm a whole new thing) for five dollars - both sides funky-uptempo-awesome. also, i agree that bettye swann (closed for the season) is great AND the flip is a great ballad as well (don't touch me). here is a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPF6FfHLN78

Guest GFAS03 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Fully agree about the Bettye Swann, Steve, first heard on a CD in the car and played it on repeat from London to Dartford and back.... And if you think about it, you could probably pick up all 50+ tracks on this topic for about 600-700 quid in total, which would get you a copy of the Blenders "Your love has got me down" on a good day. Nothing against that record at all, but that's quite a trade off...
Liljimmycrank Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 (edited) Superb topic this, and with the knowledge and musical taste of people on here, people might just be digging behind the coutch to cobble 50 large one's together at this very moment. Got a spare grand or so and you're well on your way to a decent collection!! I notice that everyone thus far has posted 45's lists. Interesting to see some LP / LP only tracks lists.......or is that another thread? Azza Edited January 14, 2010 by LilJimmyCrank
