Ljblanken Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 ok, i am relatively new to soul. i see people buying and selling stuff for 100s (maybe thousands) of pounds, but i am still discovering new, great stuff for only about 10 bucks. i feel like (at least hope) there is still plenty out there at the "low end" before i have to spend big dollars. so.... if your entire soul 45 collection burned up in a fire (god forbid), and you had 50 pounds to restart it, what are the 5 best singles could you buy for that?

What would your five be mate? I would be interested to see what cheaper records people on here would concider there must haves. cheers , Daniel.

gazman Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 What a question....soooo many great tunes to be had. many of the above tunes would be right up there, Superlatives, American Gypsy, Gloria Shannon etc but i'd go for these purely 'cause There's too many to pick from and Jimmy Robins is the ultimate deep track (IMO). C.M. Lord - Oh Mama John Edwards - messing up a good thing Dells - Make sure (the best Soul tune ever?) Lucifer - Don't you think Jimmy Robins - I made it over/Can't please you gary
Guest Nick Harrison Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) And you can also purchase these delights for £10.00 pounds each................US 45's - still today. Lenny Williams - Since I Meet You (Motown) James Bradley - I Cant Get Enough Of Your Love (Malaco) Willie Clayton - Too Many Love Pains (Kristee) Lenny Welch - Just What I Need (Big Apple) King Floyd - Im Gonna Fall In Love With You (Chimneyville) Paulette Reeves - Jazz Freak (Blue Candle) Mavis Staples - Love Gone Bad (Phono) S.o.u.l - This Time Around (Musicor) .................................... Like Gazman states ...............far too many to list. I would pick any 5 from these 8. Edited January 7, 2010 by Nick Harrison

SteveM Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 Well Nick Harrison has suggested the first thing I'd buy, S.O.U.L."This Time Around" Musicor. The best £15 you could ever spend imo. And I'll get slated for this, sorry Mr Plumb but I really can't see what the attraction is for the Dells " Make Sure" I love the Dells but this really does leave me cold. Hate mail by pm only please

I remember hearing "Make Sure" around 1991 in a club in Gloucester and couldnt believe I'd never heard it before and that it was in my price range (a fiver I think) It still sounds good now - what price if it was rare - a tenner? The Chimes I heard in the pub at Prestatyn - where all the best mid tempo cheapies are played - the best sets, imo, are played here.

I've just got them there Masqeuraders for less than a tenner including the postage from the US. What a great little tune from a great little group... Trouble is it's hard to key the name into searches on the Evil Bay cos the spelling is hard and its easily mispelled - so hopefully my copy of "How Big Is Big" won't get found and I'll buy it for peanuts!

I'm with you on this one. Two good sides but the the mid tempo flip really is the business. On the topic of double siders , I picked up Jackie Wilson - The love is real / Love Uprising for about 7 bux the other day. What a cracking record , both sides deliver the goods.

Little-stevie Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 (edited) This topic could have a forum of its own... 5 tunes so close to my heart... And oh soul full of what i like in soul music.. Ural thomas... Pain is the name of your game.. for the folk who like the deep deep soul, the vocal will knock your socks off.. I call these tunes " the wrist slashers", me and Nick Hacket delight in these after a long weekend... flip side... Since you went away is also a firm choice of a few folk, nice ballad, fatastic voice indeed with sweet flute intro.. ( a Richard Bergman special ) Fab Traits.... Love is strange, monster soul funk track that i have played for many many years.. Then i only flipped it over a coujple of years ago and found one of the sweetest deep soul sides ever called Lonely man( another top wrist slasher ).. Take away the Tams.... quality early Soul/ RnB TRACK thats caught many folk out.. played this to many who have it and had not flipped it over.. The big A- SIDE is Hey Girl don't bother me.. Bill Withers... Harlem..... Another b-side of epic proportions... As folk say, hear it out loud, it just builds and builds and builds, a true delight.. The A side needs no introduction.. Betty Swan... My heart is closed for the season.... Once played this to a guy in LA and he fell off his chair.. Picked himself up and was offering me a blank cheque for a copy.. Told him to do a little search and left it at that.. He contact me to say that he found a copy for £5.. I could name a thousand more... Just dig deep into them boxes and find quality tunes that aint been battered to death and go for silly cash.. Its great to see certain events can now feature tunes like these.. That lot should be about £50 or less if you dig around... Got a few off the lists above in the last few days.. Thanks so much for the info on quality/ cheap tuuuuunes.. steve x Edited January 11, 2010 by little-stevie
