Guest Brett F Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) Has anyone seen Soul Power the documentary, fascinating film, watched this last night, basically it was a music festival backdrop for the Kinshasa (Zaire) 'Rumble InThe Jungle' Heavyweight world title fight between Ali and Foreman, some brilliant footage including James Brown, Bill Withers, BB King, The Spinners,Celia Cruz and the Fania All Stars and others. It was all staged in Kinshasha for a 3 day festival, the film footage remained in the vaults for over 30 years, besides the obvious Soul musical performances, it is just a great piece of cinema, I have now got to get myself one of the 'Zaire 74' t-shirts wow, e-bay here I come…………………. Brett F footnote...........i just got the t-shirt..... Edited December 30, 2009 by Brett F
FrankM Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 I saw it at the cinema and it can recommend it. The film is dominated by the presence James Brown and Mohammed Ali. The local acts are ones obviously picked by the tourist board and are more french influenced than funk. The Latin acts are brilliant and one can't say you've lived till you've seen the Spinners in all their finery on a sixty foot screen.

Kris Holmes Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Yes, I saw it at the cinema a while back. Great footage. Apparently there is lots of stuff still unreleased, so I'll definitely be looking for a follow up of some description.
Pete S Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I think Soul Power is currently showing on Sky Anytime.
Guest Jamie Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I think Soul Power is currently showing on Sky Anytime. It was, but it's finished now. The Spinners stood out for me, along with the Fania All-Stars and Celia Cruz. Can anyone name the funk-ish track that the Spinners performed? It was only a short clip and looked like they were warming up back-stage. The vocals were awesome.
