Guest MBarrett Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I'm a long-time fan of Beverley Knight and I've just been watching through some clips on You Tube. Maybe it's just the mood I'm in today but I am absolutely in awe of this woman. She can rock it up with the best of them and sing the most poignant heart wrenching ballads. I'm really struggling to rank the likes of Aretha and Tina etc. etc. etc. above her??!! And of course if you hear her interviewed she's as nice and down to earth as "the girl next door." I believe the first church she sang at was on Temple Street in Wolverhampton so just a stone's throw from the famous Catacombs Club. Anyway here's one of the versions of her 2007 single - live on a lunch-time chat show for heavens sake!!!!!!!!!!! MB
Dave Pinch Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 she f**kin murdered piece of my heart IMHO. I did like movin on up on the right side when it came out.i got a 12 of that but havent really liked anything by her since then. a long long way to go to be considered good let alone great all IMHO of course dave
Guest Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 takes time, a fair bit of it too, b4 greatness she has the potential tho but will depend on future choons and musical trends Much better profile than AF etc etc
Anais nin Carms Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 She got my attention on the Jules Holland show not so long back. I think she is great performer and also get the impression that she likes to be different , her style was pretty unique in my opinion soulful but funky rocky if my memory serves me well. It did spark my interest because the tracks she sang were very different from the norm Beyonce type crooners associated with soul & rb today. Sorry worbelling divas do nothing for me. I would like to know if anyone has bought her current album , is it any good ?
Russ Vickers Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I really rate her..........never felt the need to draw comparisons with Aretha etc, she;s just good in her own way........I also rate Mary J Blige & in years to come, she will be rated up there with the best ever...... Russ
Davetay Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I really rate her..........never felt the need to draw comparisons with Aretha etc, she;s just good in her own way........I also rate Mary J Blige & in years to come, she will be rated up there with the best ever...... Russ I rate Mary J Blige alot more than Beverley Knight. I saw Mary in Manchester a few years back, what a great show. BTW I think Beverley is alright, but Mary is special imho.
dthedrug Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 HI Ya as they say UP NORTH! THE GIRL FROM WOLVERHAMPTON DOES UK PROUD - I think that her choice of songs let her down personally as most are forgettable and this would be my criticism OK she has played it safe and she is a star however she should co write songs to suit her style also if she does covers record like Stormy come to mind, if you compare her to other female UK singers she rate high but on hits if you compare with past stars you would remember the songs PP Arnold & Doris Troy went by with only 1 minor hit each all be it they ware classic? that's what Beverly lacks not having 2 to 3 classics in the can, I don't think I have met Beverley however I have net her Dad and his a true Gentleman also I worked with Westley the writer of her first hit "MOVING ON UP" (on the right side) a great bloke, and also her cousin DIANE who is better looking than Beverley and that's a fact DAVE KIL
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Beverly Knight is ok and i do like some of her songs but i don't rate her too much compared to others. Joss Stone and Lisa Stansfield to me are the best UK female singers we have had in the last 20 years
Guest MBarrett Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 (edited) I would like to know if anyone has bought her current album , is it any good ? If you are registered with Spotify you can hear the whole album on there - free and gratis. I appreciate I was going a bit over the top with the original post but I just love the way she can stand toe to toe with some of the acknowledged greats and not seem remotely fazed. Exactly the opposite. If this grim weather is getting you down at the moment the following clip may just brighten up your day. Fantastic (home grown) talent and sheer exuberance!! MB Edited December 30, 2009 by MBarrett
Larry Semmins Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Nice clip that MB,mind you had better be enthusiastic sharing the stage with Jocelyn who can warble a bit herself. I'd like to add Mica Paris to the list too here she is with a modern soul anthem ATB Steve
Anais nin Carms Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I just typed in Beverley Knight later with Jules Holland and got" Beautiful night" and also got "in your shoes "what comes home to me is what a great performer she is and how much I love her hair style I think the image restyle department have done wonders for her.

I've seen Beverley a few times, and agree with you Carms that she's never looked better. Here she is with a friend of Justin's in November. To me she seems to have been relaunched on numerous occasions, is undoubtedly talented, but never quite fulfills her full potential.

Guest Matt Male Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 I think that clip says it all.............the difference between a fantastic R&B singer and awesome soul singer...make your choice... I know what you mean, Jocelyn Brown makes it look effortless and her voice soars.
Dave Pinch Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 yeh.im not disputing beverley`s voice. but her material has been pretty poor. jocelyn brown has one of the best voices ever. somebody elses guy was immaculate.but again its down to material............................ i mean she did a record with right said fred. i suppose it pays the bills. she resides over here now doesn`t she dave
Anais nin Carms Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 (edited) I think it's a mistake to try and compare anyone to JB , I mean her voice is exceptional , very much like queen of soul Aretha , you just don't go there , no comparison . Why not just admire Bev in her own right as a good soul singer. There are lots of them that have come out of the Uk perhaps because some have had chart success we don't give them the credit they deserve ? For example my list of talented soul singers would include Sade , Lulu , Lisa Stansfield , Mica Paris , and I still think there is more to come from Amy Winehouse , also Corrine Bailey Rae who I believe writes her own material if you listen to "Butterfly" you realise just how talented this young woman is . I admire our UK ladies because they at least try to have a unique style and break the mould of oooooooooos aaaaaaahs and songs that have one punch line and not any real value to the lyrics in a song, which for me is just as important as the tune itself , to make it soulful. Goodness me Carmen .... and all before breakfast how opinionated you sound I would love to get all the girls together and create one UK black & white "Brit girls got soul "album Edited January 2, 2010 by Carms
Guest CarlosFandango Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 1st got my attention when she was supporting none other than Al Green a few years back when I went to see him at Birmingham, I kind of remember her mentioning on stage that she was from Wolverhampton which took me back a bit as I only live a few miles away, & I remember thinking back then what a fantastic voice & great performer she was ( not bad for a yam yam ... only joking ) I still think her best stuff is yet to come, but imho she ranks way up there. Good enough for 'The Reverend' ... Good enough for me
Guest MBarrett Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 What a darling she is - she just won one of tonight's rounds of Celebrity Mastermind on BBC1. Specialist subject was Prince - her hero - who she has supported on more than one occasion. But she also made a really good job of the General Knowledge round too. In the little chat bit John Humphreys asked her to define Soul Music. She was obviously unprepared for THAT question but did a pretty creditable job. If I can find time I'll "rewind" it on iPlayer and write down what she said. MB
Guest posstot Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 She has a poor vocal range..sounds quite flat and i don't see anything inspirational about her performances. If you like chart music only then can you assume that she is soulful in any stretch of the imagination. How dya like them onions!!

Listen to Wendell Watts "You Girl" on you tube. Shit , let the cat out of the bag again! I think Beverly Knight is is good mainstream, but it can only be second division to proper rare soul!
