In those days Dave Burton and i were partners in selling records , We had Otis Smith " let her go" which i sold to keith minshull at the torch , "Bari Track " doni burdick , "crying over you" Duke Browner cant remember who i sold them too though!!!!! I remember in 1973 just before i exited the scene to get married i gave a few records to kev , one of which was " rosemary what happened" popcorn whylie which i had been trying to get played so i could sell it, kev played it and made it massive !!!! Its not really who had the 1st copy , but who had the balls to play it the first time, IMHO. Great thread, good posts
Goldsoul Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Blimey Dave....you are right. I played your discovery and still can't stand it today!

Guest chorleybloke Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 yvonne vernee just like you did me,don varner tear stained face, rubin you been away 3 of my all time favs. anybody know who found em first OMG are you my unknown twin brother?? DV is my all-time fave & always will be; YV never out of top 5; Rubin maybe top 20. The first 2 will be the last I ever sell - if I sell any that is. Quite unusual for folk to share the same all-timers, even in our limited brotherhood. Another thread perhaps - coincidental all-time faves? Cheers Pete

Davetay Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Kev. a good friend of mine sold Russ the Mike Post LP, at the thursday night do in Wigan, pre- Casino. (RUGBY CLUB?) Malc Jackson from Accy went to the States sometime in middle of 73, he also got Lou Ragland which he sold to Colin. He got lots of other stuff as well at the time.
Ian Dewhirst Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 LOU PRIDE Pretty certain that Rob Thomas was the first with this - l remember going to the 'Gables Country Club' near Mablethorpe, Lincs and Rob offered it to John Vincent on the night. Well the Rob Thomas bit's right but how the hell could you confuse me with John Vincent? He had a 'tache! Ian D

Ian Dewhirst Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Question from me for IAN DEWHIRST.One of my fave late casino spins was WILBUR WALTON--24 HOURS OF LONELINESS.I once heard that IAN discovered this in a Sheffield junk shop circa 1978, is this true? Correctomundo. I'd kinda dropped off the Northern scene at that point but I was promoting the Saturday Northern night @ the Central in Leeds and Pat Brady and Swish were the deejays at that point. For some reason I had to go to Sheffield one day and Pat came along with me for the ride and he spent the entire journey moaning that 'the Northern scene wasn't like it used to be' and 'you couldn't just find records easily anymore' etc, etc. I was in an optimistic mood and saying to Pat that records were everywhere and he just had to be a bit more optimistic and do some frigging digging! We were heading out of Sheffield back to the M1 and I remember saying to him that there were Northern records right under his nose and, as a joke, I said:- 'Hang on. Can you smell that"? He said. "Smell what"? I said. "Vinyl mate. I can smell vinyl!" and at that exact point I spotted a junk shop and pulled up and parked saying, "C'mon let's have a look. Records are everywhere" etc, etc. We went and there were racks and racks of records and the first one I pulled out was Wilbur Walton Jr "24 Hours Of Loneliness" on 123, went to the counter, paid the guy 25p for it and gave it to Pat and said "There ya go. There's records everywhere". He said, "How do you know it's Northern"? I said, "Look at the title. How can it not be"? We didn't even play it till we got back to Leeds. Pat was astounded. 100% good timing and the luck of the devil LOL..... Ian D

Cheapsiderecords Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Just sat here with a couple of Stella's while the wife is in the other room watching some North American crap chat show. Great thread and it doesnt matter if it is Muriel Day or Eddie Parker I thank you guys who were out there discovering these great tunes.
dthedrug Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Hi All a bit more info not that I am biased but most of the best UK discoveries post Twisted Wheel were from the IN_CROWD TEAM that frequented and hosted the 6ts all-nighters in London's West End, I remember from about 75 picking up anything on PYE group of labels for Mick S, Ian & Pete W had good finds and I wrote about him turning up at WIGAN with half dozen mint "walk with a winner" not sure if he discovered it but I will always attribute the record with Pete W for those who cant remember I got the cracked one £7, still got it , back to the IN CROWD although I say Mick but that is because it is he i 1st heard them played but back in 71/2 the IN CROWD met at the Birds Nest, a motley crew of Soul-boys not the norm at the time as most faces were more Smooth and up to date, Crisp From Napper to plates, however my keen eye and love of stimulation, soon found me swifting in at the Dive Bar, certainly mick Clive and Randy etall discovered a lot more than you would think and though most Northerners would like to make claim it was indeed the men from the Midlands and south ward that fueled the Early days Mick & Clive LEE DAVID GOERGE CARROW FRANKIE BEVERLEY "IF THATS.." AND Clive found both fairmont sides however the IN-CROWD never boast or brag about there finds? if it was me I would as me and the north are as Alain as me & the French as we all know the can speak English but choose not to, a good example is the northerners questions about attending a future event example (a)RR t u go-in t berry later on RR u, or ( demoe ave u t got t any t Tamla t Motown t demoose) © that t gear i got t from u s t best t it was reet champion r u go-in t Ritz Alldayer u r u go-in r u) as you can imagine no wonder the true soul scene had to be propped up by the IN-TEAM, and before you start I lived in the North and went to school in Preston so I speak with Forked Tongue? Yes I am aware that my remarks may cause some annoyance but don't worry you will forget it all by t tomorrow once you have had a milk stout?. Where was I yes many records were found in the London area right up until the mid 8ts and for myself I remember Buying 2 records from Mick in 72 that had cover up label's at £1.50 each it turned out he had crossed me as both were still available in the shops Buster Pearson on Action A Torch CU play & Honyend Heartbreaker which after a swallow of Caps sounded like the Dogs DAVE (REMEMBERS THE CHICKEN RUN) KIL A COUPLE OF THE IN-CROWD WITH OLD SAGE GIVING ADVISE TO A YOUNG PTETENDER FROM THE MIDLAND (SOUL ON SPOON) BLESS YOU ALL (MORE THAN SKIN DEEP)
dthedrug Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Who played Little Richard's Okeh recordings first? I remember in early 70's hearing them played at Up The Junction, Torch and Blackpool Mecca but cant recall where I heard them first GLEN BELLAMY PLAYED MANY RECORDS THAT WERE NOT FROM THE WHEEL DAVE KIL

Dave Thorley Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Rob Moss found the first Moments on Hogg , still got the letter from him saying" guess what I've found It's not The Fabulous Impacts "...Rob also discovered the first Kell Osbourne " Quicksand " , taped 3/4 of it on the end of a tape " what do you think of this - think it would go ? " .Remember taking the tape to Stafford and playing it to Butch and Dave Thorley , think Dave bought it in the end ? Think Rob had one of the first Wayne Anthony's " Blow me a kiss " [ Waylana ] Sold it to Guy who played the flip " Go Go Wedding " instead ...Thought of covering up the top side as Carolyn Crawford as Wayne sounded a little female with his young vocals ...Best,Eddie I did, Eddie
Goldsoul Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Heaps of other stuff from Dave Raistrick from early 80's (when I was a regular customer, Limitations, Four Sights, Soul Communicaters, Lee Bates "Why Don't You Write", Isonics and many, many more. Steve Cooper (Bedford) for Tina Roberts. Pete Lawson for promoting loads of semi-known sounds Tommo from Leicester for pushing Detroit sounds I had Tina Roberts in 1979 selling it to Butch in '81, around the same time I sold him the Atlantic's on Marquee and Debonairs(Soul Click). I also had the Empires on Chavis around 1978 too! I also turned down the first ever Tamala Lewis in 1977 from George's Golden Oldies,Clifton,New Jersey citing '$100' was way too much. I generally bought Velvet Satins, Steinways and similar off him for $5-10 each, so there was no way I was having any 100 bucks mularky. Martin Koppell bought it instead. The very same guy took me to a store in Newark where I got the first Del Larks Demo(sold to Dave Raistrick) Two days later I met George Blackwell's widow and purchased all the vinyl and tapes she had. Upon my return to the UK in '79, the whole country had gone Joe 90,Green Onions and Muriel Day mad, so my Soul packs were littered with George Blackwell's Mr Loser, Exayveons,Herbs etc! Happy days....
Marc Forrest Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Dennis Edwards Johnnie On The Spot I thought it was Martin Koppell/Tim Brown? Well, both told me they were the first to play it. Tim then said to me "well, maybe Steve (Smith) was first but then again I was the first to have played the flipside" So, Johnny On The Spot = Steve Smith I Didn`t Have To = Tim Brown
grant Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 well $100 was a lotta money back then so how much did the del larks demo set u back?
Chris L Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Its not really who had the 1st copy , but who had the balls to play it the first time, IMHO. Great thread, good posts They were great DJs in them days Dave. Ian L, Jebby, Minshull, Ellis, et al................................. Chris L
