Who Discovered What ?

Hi Ian

Sorry to have mis- Led you Ian it was the day after I went into the Church. The thing was in those days there wasn't the current pre-occupation with major label issues as there seems to be now, just to have a copy of a record was sufficient. I didn't even keep a copy of Tony Middleton as I had a Polydor copy at the time.

Didn't even know about Bostock's at the time, it was only when I relayed the story of my find to John Anderson some time later that he said it was probably part of the Bostock's deal. He also told me that the first Salvadors "Stick By Me Baby" (50 copies) and Kenny Smith "Oh Lord,What's Happening etc"(50 copies) came out of the Bostock's load. I also remmember a similar story John told me of another load he got from the west coast and sold on to Paul Bostock, though not before he removed 800 copies of Larry Atkins "Lighten Up" Highland and 200 copies of Len Jewel "All My Good,Good Lovin' Pzazz, etc

One of the weirdest things though was that on Skegness Pleasure Beach/fairground when you either took a 10p risk at hooking a duck or 3 darts in the same bed from one of the side stalls guess what they gave you as a consolation prize if you lost? Yep an american import 45, included in some of these handouts would be picture sleeve copies of 'Kim Weston' I Got What You Need-MGM

This was also a giveaway prize at our local fair too so they travelled 150 miles further down south! (Spyder Turner was too)

This really is a superb topic and it is interesting to read comments from my mate Rick Cooper of his times at Global.

Rick and myself went on a buying trip in the seventies which took in New York down to Miami and involved discovering a large storeroom of vinyl in the now art deco district of Miami.

Time meant we could only explore half the stock, but we did pull out some classics like white demos of Landslide, Brooks and Jerry on Dynamo demos, the Jewels on Mgm and all sorts of stuff.I don't remember any new discoveries, but thought our adventure worth a mention. I went back about a year or so later and Jacks Records was gone-replaced by a coffee shop. I did find a mom and pop record shop with some soul stuff , including 200 Tarpon copies of Denise Lasalles Love Reputation--which I left as the UK price was only £2 at the time- but often wonder where the other shops stock went.Probably via some deal to the UK.

I still have one of the two Showstoppers-Got to get closer acetates-actualy vinyl copies-the other sold to Neil Rushton who released it on Inferno crediting myself and Rick as a+r consultants!I am sure I had an extended 12 inch mix of Houseparty off Rick as well .

I wish. The arguement for the Servicemen probably boils down to Pep/Colin/Sam or some combination thereof LOL....

Ian D biggrin.gif

The Servicemen was a big sound at the Cats, so it may well have been Pep...??

Even in downhome Banbury ,Oxon we had the MGM / Verve '45's on the visiting fairground as prizes .I also remember winning a sealed Mel and Tim " Starting all over again " Stax album for losng at darts , which was easy for me ....Remember the local market had upteen copies of The Magictones on MAHS , and further afield in Leamington Spa , there was loads of copies of Spyder Turner and Kim Weston on MGM . Best,Eddie

Eddie, you've just reminded me of a similar stall at a local fair where US Curtom albums were given away as consolation prizes! I also remember finding the Magictones on Mahs in a newspaper shop C.1973, along with several items on US Shout, all unplayed... Very weird.

In the early 1970s , there was a newspaper shop in Doncaster's Northern Bus station ( there were two at that time - the other being the Southern - the name " Northern " always made we in / of the Doncaster Illuminati smile ) , who used to sell US cut out albums in a revolving rack , and 45s in a box on the counter .

There was the odd worthwhile thing , but never anything special .

Talking of which, does anyone remember any of those cut-out record shops that used to take over a town centre shop and knock out U.S. albums @ 25p a pop?

One turned up in Leeds with TONS of incredible titles. Lots of Curtom, Casablanca, Boardwalk and other cut-outs probably around '77-'78. I actually ended up buying hundreds of albums from 'em - I even put a small ad in Echoes with Parliament, Jeanie Reynolds and other album titles at the time.

You'd never know where one of these type of shops would appear. They'd often open overnight and close down as quickly. There were quite a few in London in the 80's as well. I remember a fantastic haul of cut-out import P&P and other small label 12"'s in a Berwick Street shop in the 80's - 1000's of 'em. Co-incidentally, the same 12"'s would become hugely collectible some 20 years later and would virtually be hung in Reckless @ £100 or £200 apiece despite the fact that the vast bulk of 'em could have been found just yards away some 20 years earlier for pennies. Fate goes full circle, what goes around comes around etc, etc

And talking of the Bostocks penetration of the UK, I worked @ Island Records in Chiswick in the late 80's and popped into Chiswick for a sandwich one lunchtime and noticed a tiny Rock N' Roll type shop packed to the gill with 45's. I just presumed that everything in there would be Rock N' Roll or Pop but popped in anyway. Lo and behold, they had a boxful of MGM/Verve stuff which could have originally come from Bostocks 'cos virtually everythng was in there - all the Spyder Turner, Howard Tate, Kim Westons, Tymes, Shalimars, Triumphs, April Stevens, Dottie Cambridge etc, etc but also I found promos of The Embers and The Velours which I'd never found in Bradford. So maybe an ex UK record company bloke from the 60's unloading a bunch of his old U.S. sample stock or the long arm of Bostock's again?

I'm beginning to think that the vast majority of everything on MGM and Verve ended up in the UK 'cos I never saw much of it in the U.S. at all come to think of it...........that early Bostocks hit probably cleared all of their overstocks in one fell swoop!

Dave,

l remember that load, it originated from a distributor on Pico Blvd in LA around 1978/9 l tracked it back to Bostocks, but before l got to it both John Anderson and Ian Dewhirst had visited the warehouse in Bradford and picked the place but l did come out of there with a few bits but all the quantity stuff had gone !!! The next day l went to Ian's place in Leeds and bought stuff from his stock and mail order list, items purchased on that day for around £1.50 each - Brewster Crew, Ultimates-Br-roma etc..... mmmmmmmmm bargain days Ian.biggrin.gif

Yep. That's the one John. Well remembered! Interesting shop. I was going through a mad 12" collecting mentality at the time so I wasn't totally focussed on 45's so it was happy accident that I found 'em - I never did go through the place properly. Did you find anything there?

Ian D biggrin.gif

If I knew then.... :shhh:

got some great records from Terry at Spinning Disc (I grew up in Brentford, just down the road), but I was buying US garage / UK beat / rock'n'roll / punk then, moved out of London to go to college in late '78, never went back to do it properly.

Selectadisc in Nottingham was also a prime source in the early-mid seventies - my first visit there was in 1972/73 to Arkwright St.

Pretty certain that some major discoveries came out of the Canal Street Warehouse.

Maybe Kev Roberts could fill us in ??

Out of curiosity, did Simon also supply Selectadisc with bulk loads of assorted records as well as the pressings? I'm wondering where else Selectadisc would have sourced from other than Simon?

Also, talking of Nottingham, where did all the Ila Vann's "You Made Me This Way" come from? I know they came from Nottingham originally but I'm not sure if it was Selectadisc..........

boxing.gif Hi Just thought I would put up a few list addresses from the mid 7ts I have some early ones somewhere but the best were from Contempos lists always at the back of B&S which was the equivalent to the inner net in its early days don't you think I have not got a Carlos Bedford or REDERFUSION in Notts and I don't think MOORES did a list, As for Simon he lived in the Leicester shop I used to get free records from them and the Black Magic stuff also the cloth badge for black magic are all fake unless you got them direct as they were sent out to DJsph34r.gif DAVE THE BLADE

Here's the interview with John Anderson from Big Daddy Magazine. The interview was in 3 parts and at he moment I can't find Part 2.

Anyway here's Part 1.

Can't get my scanner to work so have photographed the pages. I think that it can be read with a bit of manipulation.

If people can read it OK then I'll do Part 3 at least for the moment. I seem to recall that Part 2 was more concerned with his reactivation of Grapevine which I think was the underlying reason for the interview although I could be mistaken.

I can't find the year but would guess about 10 years ago ?

If it doesn't work i apologise but technology is not my strongpoint

Another source for import packs was a place in Ashton-under-lyne - John Hillell? If l recall. A 100 count box cost £10 mostly mixed pop, country, soul and funk 45s - Bagged a Chris Cerf - Sweet Music - Amy- from one box load just as Soul Sam started to play it covered up mid 70s.

I Think Dave McCadden visited the place and found one of the first copies of Larry Hale - Once - Diamond.

I also heard lots about a place in Sheffield called 'Violet May's' but didn't get there until around 1973/4 - any BIG discoveries from there ??? - Over to you Malc Burton-Steve M

When global took over selectadisc in canal street, the only remaining stock, were pop records,ie david bowie-man etc (desperate dan cover) US mercury, northern pressings, the only decent 0rig.stock, pete warner. Old timers, might remember bjd label, brian selby( selectadisc owner) and john bratton. Was there a third party, hence the d.

Somewhat out of order I know but here's Part 2 of the John Anderson interview.

I was wrong with my previous comments, there's quite a lot of interesting stuff here I think. Apologies again, this time it's on brown paper !

Hope you can makeout most of it out by zooming in.

Not much comment about it so far, perhaps it wasn't as interesting to others as it was to me !

Marvellous thread!:)

Anyone know who discovered Tony Galla-In Love?

I found a copy of TG around 73 or 74 at Global Records when I worked there. It was on a yellow Swan label. Global also had the studio tapes for it. I thought it was rubbish so stuck it in my reject box. Sold it as a job lot to someone for peanuts. Still think its rubbish, sorry.

So could have been you maybe Rick that discovered it. As for who broke it ... the mystery continues ..

big spin for Keb but dunno who actually discovered it.

Really? Never heard Keb play that back then. Remember saying to Joan that it was a good tune at Buzzard in about 84 - she said "it was about four years ago". So maybe he played it early 80's (Stafford?) and I missed it. Just surprised as he complained about stuff that wasn't soul - hated Bobby Valentin etc...

GuyH and Keb were both playing it c/up as 'Winfield Parker' during the early 80's...thought GuyH may have been before Keb, mind?

Bought my copy at Stafford when it was still covered up...£15!

Sure is! I'm glad I swept one up early on. In a way we slightly devalued it because it was a 30p special on Brian '45' Phillip's list but I bet it's rare as hell these days. I certainly didn't see that many around after the mid 70's. Just looking at that label now gives me goosebumps LOL.....
