Kev,

I bet you was happy with that price back then.

I did not give it a second thought. The disc sounded boring and stale with no real danceability.

I love it today though.

Funny thing is, I thought The Cashmeres on Hem at £70 was about right in 1978. I let that go to Richard Searling, while selling Bobby Kline for £3 and a certain record on Triode for £30. Hence I am no record dealer today!

I would say these three are gonna take some beating !! > 4r.gif

Lovely isn't it! I think this was the photo shot for Pye Disco Demand by Dave McAleer in the Summer of 1974.

Russ has the Gloria Barnes album that featured You Dont Mean It. I think the A&M single of Towanda had not been discovered at the time.

Richard's holding Free's Taking It Away. Ironically a failed spin for him. As for me, I have no idea what the heck the 45 is. Could be Ernie Marbray or George Juke Byrd, both being championed by yours truly...to no avail.

Rumours of a clutched Javells acetate were seriously distorted!

John had the finance and a great contact in Bernie Binnick, a former label owner in Philadelphia(BB Records- The Showmen etc). A great link to John Lamont's House of Sounds in Upper Darby, PA

Bernie generally lined up the hits with John flying in to scoop em up.

I would have to agree with your choices but with an addition and that would be Tim Ashibende.(hope iv'e spelt that right) most of Gary Rushbrooks came thru Tim(a bit of a dark horse you may say)smile. Lets not foget Dave Raistrick and Arthur Fenn when they were kicking it around too. regards Gilly and Nicola.

Cheers Gilly - Yes Arthur and myself came up with quite a few new discoveries from our regular trips to the states through the 70s & 80s and onwards.

William Powell - Heartaches Souvenirs - Powerhouse

Don Ray - Born a Loser - RCA

Imperial Cs - Someone Tell Her - Phi la soul

Young Brothers - What's your Game

Admirations - You Left Me - Peaches

Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again - Soultown

Vondells - Hey Girl - Airtown

and quite a few more........

I Sold mostly to Gary Rushbrooke, Soul Sam and Arthur, Dave Withers, Rod Shard, Guy Hennigan, Keb Darge and an up and coming chap(at that time) from Stoke called Butch.

Thanks

Dave.

Brad came up with some beauties! He had direct contacts with a lot of people in the states in the early 70's which was unusual at the time. The source of the first copy of "Send Him Back" among many others (£2.50 if I remember rightly on a Tuesday night @ Burnely Cricket Club)!

Didn't Sam play Larry c/u as Eddie Seaburg ''She's wanted in three states'' before Richard got his......?

Larry Clinton.

John Manship to Soul Sam - Soul Sam to Richard Searling

L.C. was found in Orlando, Fla 1976 in the front room of pot-smoking kitten thrower; i believe the full story is featured in Neil Rushton's new book.

Don Gardner.

John Anderson to John Manship for £3.00 John Manship then sold it to Ian Levine for £3.00 at the Ritz circa 1976.

the above deal, is almost legendary as he also bought Inspirations - Breakthrough, Utopias - LaSalle the 3 cost him £26.00 in total i think he beat me down to £25

Sorry Golden 101,  The Inspirations - Breakthrough came from Neil to me.. and then to Levine. Although I did do a few deals with Colin, but I think Neil sold me it, Neil will know best.

LOL, 'pot-smoking kitten thrower' is a classic! Another was that 'Charles Manson lookalike freak' from L.A.!

How come the nutcases had all the good tunes?

That would make you late 50's/60 ish or thereabouts Chris? Both were huge Torch records and "Quick Change Artist" was probably the biggest tune when I was just starting out......

C'mon John. Is that seriously the only thing you're going to say on this thread. I know you're fed up with the attitude sometimes on here and you promised to never post again, but a thread like this needs guys filled with obsolete data like you. It's a shame you only participate to give you credit where it's due. It'd be great to hear more stories from you...

There has been many threads about classic 70s discoeries (never boring, keep 'em coming), but I've always wondered who discovered more recent plays ie Ace Spectrum, David Ruffin (Rode By The Place), Exportatios I Want you, 5 Royales, etc..

PS I'm I the only one on here who kinda likes The FLasher?

dont know if anyone can clear up a mystery on uk cbs demo , chapter five you cant mean it, my mate found a pristine demo in a junk shop for 10p,sold it at wigan(totally unknown) for about a quid, then a few weeks later lo and behold guess what was played at wigan and well recieved, never really got my head round that one,who claimed they discovered that and did whoever buy it off my mateg.gif

I believe that a more recent 'find' was The Jokers, Soul Sound (Skofield).

I understand that a very good mate of mine (Neil Brown) jointly found the first 2 copies of this with Stevie Z in the mid 90's in Val Shiveley's in Philly.

If memory serves, Stevie kept his copy and Neil sold his to Ginger.

Ian Cunliffe (I seem to recall being told) found the 3rd copy.

2 years after Neil and Stevie found the first copies Neil and I returned to Val's and found copy 4, misfiled under 'T' instead of 'S' (Val's is organised in label order).

Bought it for $15 and took and offer from Terry Davis for £1,500 within a week of coming home (paid for the trip did that).

Wish I'd kept it though as it was in tip top condition.

Ian categorically states he discovered it in 1973. Battle it out on Twitter!
