Sheldonsoul Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 asked a question on the recent jd bryant thread about who discovered it and i think it was tedsoul who replied and said it was kev roberts, which then got me wondering who discovered records like larry clinton, don gardner and and other big tunes like these 1

good angel Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 john Anderson, was the main man for me, he use to box hundreads of 45s up north in the early 70s two top jocks at station road,Billy. Yes,Billy I used buy off John(SoulBowl)well I was at work my Mam,rang John for me. Kev.
Goldsoul Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Kev, I bet you was happy with that price back then. Kev I did not give it a second thought. The disc sounded boring and stale with no real danceability. I love it today though. Funny thing is, I thought The Cashmeres on Hem at £70 was about right in 1978. I let that go to Richard Searling, while selling Bobby Kline for £3 and a certain record on Triode for £30. Hence I am no record dealer today!
Goldsoul Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I would say these three are gonna take some beating !! Lovely isn't it! I think this was the photo shot for Pye Disco Demand by Dave McAleer in the Summer of 1974. Russ has the Gloria Barnes album that featured You Dont Mean It. I think the A&M single of Towanda had not been discovered at the time. Richard's holding Free's Taking It Away. Ironically a failed spin for him. As for me, I have no idea what the heck the 45 is. Could be Ernie Marbray or George Juke Byrd, both being championed by yours truly...to no avail. Rumours of a clutched Javells acetate were seriously distorted!
Billywhizz Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 he supplied searlings sounds didnt he ? some not all,
Billywhizz Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Yes,Billy I used buy off John(SoulBowl)well I was at work my Mam,rang John for me. Kev. jonh was well ahead of his time, luv to no who was his suplier was. Billy

A great link to John Lamont's House of Sounds in Upper Darby, PA Bernie generally lined up the hits with John flying in to scoop em up.

LOL, 'pot-smoking kitten thrower' is a classic! Another was that 'Charles Manson lookalike freak' from L.A.! How come the nutcases had all the good tunes? Ian D

I know you're fed up with the attitude sometimes on here and you promised to never post again, but a thread like this needs guys filled with obsolete data like you. It's a shame you only participate to give you credit where it's due. It'd be great to hear more stories from you... There has been many threads about classic 70s discoeries (never boring, keep 'em coming), but I've always wondered who discovered more recent plays ie Ace Spectrum, David Ruffin (Rode By The Place), Exportatios I Want you, 5 Royales, etc.. PS I'm I the only one on here who kinda likes The FLasher? Edited December 8, 2009 by Dante
Sheldonsoul Posted December 8, 2009 Author Posted December 8, 2009 dont know if anyone can clear up a mystery on uk cbs demo , chapter five you cant mean it, my mate found a pristine demo in a junk shop for 10p,sold it at wigan(totally unknown) for about a quid, then a few weeks later lo and behold guess what was played at wigan and well recieved, never really got my head round that one,who claimed they discovered that and did whoever buy it off my mate 1
good angel Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Did'nt the Frost brothers turn up one or two things? Cant remember now Kev
Scooterboy Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I believe that a more recent 'find' was The Jokers, Soul Sound (Skofield). I understand that a very good mate of mine (Neil Brown) jointly found the first 2 copies of this with Stevie Z in the mid 90's in Val Shiveley's in Philly. If memory serves, Stevie kept his copy and Neil sold his to Ginger. Ian Cunliffe (I seem to recall being told) found the 3rd copy. 2 years after Neil and Stevie found the first copies Neil and I returned to Val's and found copy 4, misfiled under 'T' instead of 'S' (Val's is organised in label order). Bought it for $15 and took and offer from Terry Davis for £1,500 within a week of coming home (paid for the trip did that). Wish I'd kept it though as it was in tip top condition. Chris
