Tom Smith did this a few years ago, seem to remember he bought a car and drove the Big Sur and visited L.A. he had pictures of him driving along the strip. I'm sure Tom would enlighten you you can get hold of him at Beatin' Rythym Manchester. ATB Steve

i was in san fran 2005 and wasted a lot of time looking for 45s in stores in sf and berkely & oakland. i was also in a couple of shops selling donated stuff and on a fleamarket. i'm still pi**ed - my best find was david ruffin - walk away from love for 7$. two hints: 1. rooky ricardo's shop owner has a manship guide 2. rent a car and drive to big sur

Went to L.A. in 2004. Didn't find any shops selling any kind of vinyl. Brought some nice stuff back though-but NOT from KR or his 'associated' dealers. A local guy from East L.A. was hanging around the hotel lobby with a 50 box! He gave me a look inside, everything was mint and still in their original sleeves. Mostly local demos. I went across to the bank ATM over the road with my VISA card for some cash..Nice... thumbup.gif

Big Sur is a must had a loveley breakfast overlooking the river, monterey pacific grove really beautiful places, the drive from san francisco all the way to san diego is fantastic, we stopped at 2 places on the way Carmel a gorgeous place, and San luis obispo very nice also, Hurst mansion is well worth a visit, and in san diego you have sea world and the zoo, the drive on the coast road is breathtaking. didnt bother with record shops as we were on holiday.

Carmel is Clint Eastwood's place-he was Mayor there wasn't he? Does he still own that bar in Carmel called the Hog's Breath I wonder?

We travelled mainly on the Los Angeles Metro (underground train system a bit like the tube but miles cheaper) to get around-it sure is a big place. Went to Universal Studios Hollywood. Went on the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Blvd not to mention the tour around Beverly Hills. The wife went to Long Beach. We went Sunday shopping in East L.A. and you'll never find nicer and more polite people than in the Latin area of East LA. We told them where we'd flown from and they made us feel very welcome. Very memorable.

I've done this drive but was distinctly underwhelmed. Thought the west coast of Britain would p*ss all over it.

What part of the West coast of Britain iS that???

He means the A6 that goes through Chorley Steve, puts the San Diego to LA freeway to shame it doeslaugh.gif

I was in California in August & had a mooch round Rooky Ricardo's in SF - some decent 45s but don't expect bargains. There's also a store in Long Beach, didn't manage to get there & can't recall the name of the place.

Best haul for me though was Rich Rosen in Las Vegas, he turns up some very good titles but charges like a wounded rhino. However when he realises you've got more of a clue than he does about current values, he's open to negotiation.yes.gif

Cheers

I went a couple of months ago to see Rich Rosen (what a nice guy) at WAX TRAX in Vegas.

Noticed the vast amount of price guides he had..Manships included. When I started looking through the guides Rich seemed concerned. He then asked me why I was looking through the guides as he guaranteed to beat the guide prices anyway. He did-but not by much.

Have you looked (google) to see if your trip ties in with any record fairs, not been for a few years now but the Pasadena swop meet was very kind to me more than once.

How can you be underwhelmed by the route 1 coast road breathtaking views all the way along lots of twisting and turning following the cliffs, small bridges across inlets, no the only thing about the west coast of britain is it is always being pissed on

Have also done the Great ocean road in Australia not a patch on route 1 but still enjoyable.
