Guest Hunnymon Posted December 3, 2009 Share Posted December 3, 2009 I was out shopping with the Mrs in Morrisons supermarket yesterday, totally bored stiff when I drifted over to the bargain CDs and found for just two pounds "Believe In Love" a music club complilation on Teddy Pendergrass plus also for another two pounds "Love Train" another music club compilation on this time the O'Jays. Both double CDs too. A total of 50 tracks between them all for just 4 quid! I sneaked it in with the shopping Any one else picked up any CD bargains this week? Record companies are totally focussed on shifting bulk and with the demise of the indie stores the supers will inevitably clean up. The above albums are both through Demon who are very strong in the supermarkets. Watch out for a new series called Backbeats which launches @ HMV on Boxing Day - 10 albums @ a fiver apiece including a Northern Soul volume with Len Barry's "When You Call Me Baby" on (first time on CD) and a decent Windy City Soul vol with some tasty stuff on....... I seem to recall that when CDs first came out they cost around fifteen quid each! Richards job sounds fantastic, but I'm sure you will very much have to be "on the ball" with what's going to sell rather than filling the shelves with your own personel taste in things. Richards job sounds fantastic, but I'm sure you will very much have to be "on the ball" with what's going to sell rather than filling the shelves with your own personel taste in things. A fiver is cheap considering that the retailer will take 50% of that! However, we now only have one national music chain left which is HMV, so if they don't order your releases then you're in trouble. So now we have to design releases which will work for HMV, especially in the middle of a recession, so that means coming up with something that they can get behind and which will work for their huge sales campaigns which are about 4 times a year. In order to clear that price you have to go to all the repertoire owners and beg for a lower royalty rate, screw down costs ruthlessly and get your maths right. And then pray that the releases will sell through LOL. It's a horribly difficult market as Ady, Tony and anyone else who is in the music biz will agree. And you're quite right about Richard not allowing his personal tastes to interfere with his job. The supermarkets basically sell music the same way they sell beans - the same principles apply and it's all about revenue and shelf space. I'm pretty sure that Morrison's haven't stocked ANY of Richard's own compilations because the average Morrisons customer probably isn't too bothered about George Soule or Rance Allen and Richard knows that. Having said that, I think supermarkets could improve their ranges beyond the Top 40 and Pop compilations and offer a wider selection in their music sections. Ever since Woolworths and Zavvi crashed it's become much harder for the public to buy CD's spontaneously and I think the supermarkets could pick up more sales if they had a wider selection on offer. It shows how much music has been devalued when you can buy a double Teddy Pendergrass CD for £4.00 and some killer compilations with over 75 minutes of music for less than a packet of fags! And it's worth keep all your CD's and Vinyl 'cos when the Chinese unleash their cyber-bomb and disable all computers in the West, then you'll still have the physical copies left to play! It is not always about price. Totally agree too. It pisses me off that the majors and supermarkets have killed off a huge amount of indie stores over the last 10 years especially. It shows how times have changed - HMV is now classed as a 'specialist' and the supermarkets are seen as mainstream. We're now in a situation where for most companies you have to get an order from one or another of 'em to justify a release! Have you read "Last Shop Standing" by Graham Jones yet funkyfeet? Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted December 6, 2009 Share Posted December 6, 2009 Well cheapest CD's i got was for Northern soul CD's all under £5 from amazon in new and used some hadn't been open and one was from Kent forgot title but it only had Moris Chesnutt song on i knew other stuff was like Little Tony etc. But saying supermarkets is all about top 40 then what about soul releases you can buy from say Tesco that has no top 40 hits on it. certain complations i seen like James Brown have very little hits on it. does the average shopper want this or a comp with his most famous stuff on it same as Teddy Pendergrass and O'Jays. If only I had waited another week Morrisons must surely be selling them at a loss. About the "Love Train" album - I'm really enjoying those three live cuts at the end of CD2 "Backstabbers" "Love Train" and "For The Love Of Money". I picked up the wonderful Windy city soul cd compiled by the nice Ian Dewhirst on here 2 for 10 is a bargain, i wasn't aware that a Northern soul in the collection was released until i got home as i would have looked for it.
