Johnmcc Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Hi all. Lots of comments since I posted this, but very few prepared to predict how long the scene will last so I will stick my neck out and give us all at least another 15 yrs. I'm basing this on average age of attendees at soul nights, 48ish? and also looking at the rock 'n' roll scene which predates ours by 7/8 yrs. Mind you I did once think it would all be over once the 70's started! nice to be proved wrong. Do whats right, not whats white. (extra point if you remeber who wrote this.) Ulyssees. Rick Warren?

Ian Parker Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 (edited) The only thing i did think of................................... Perhaps like many other scenes or apprreciation societies, Northern Soul might be discovered & revived in 80 or more years time Thats what happened in the early 20s, they discovered chamber music & had Victorian evenings in vintage dress And even now with the 40s & 50s scene, they have 40s reanactment weekends & rock n roll weekenders. Sorry, im looking at this from a Historian's point of view as usual Debbie x Edited December 13, 2009 by parkash

Paul-s Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 im with beeks, myself i was always guilty of "never been the casino" feckin ell, i was only 10 wen it shut, think there will always be "converts" as the music style can be so varied, and people can take and listen too so much under one banner regards doog I agree...i went to Wigan, but it wasnt the be all and end all of Northern soul and i certainly dont feel the need or desire to go back! There are many bigots on this scene and a lot resent young people. Probably makes them insecure., i dont know. Thats why i enjoy Melbourne, Oslo, Milan...anywhere where theres no agenda and an open mind to music. Think the problem is one of semantics and definition. Thats why i say im not into Northern Soul, as its been weighed down in a very negative way by a bunch of old duffers looking for ownership and control. Im definitely into SOUL and havent heard every track of every genre, so cannot say 'I dont like' a particular style...theres room for all. Young people are essential to 'SOUL' surviving. As for Northern Soul, its been argued overand manipulated so much that im not sure what it means. To me it was an attitude and energy, that led me to listen to soul music non-stop and travel each week to hear NEW and exciting music, to one of a handful of venues that was supported by a group of likeminded, open hearted souls. I think the situation nowadays, with a thousand vevues on every week (seems like!) and the 'older generations' dwindling desire to travel, is a lot more fractuous and thats why is neccessary for younger souls to kick some life into it and show some unity.....peace.

Guest Phoenix8049 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 This thread was suppose to be about, how long will Northern Soul be around for, but people like you & a few of the others, (& its always the same people) who seem to have a problem with folk who wear some of the clothes, it is YOU who is rude & offensive, about the way people dress, if you dont like what people wear to some of the Soul nights, thats tough!, we are not all going to change for you! But just think about it for a moment, how would you feel if someone insulted your girlfriend of wife for the way she looked?, & because we choose to stick up for ourselves you dont like it, well this is your wake up call! If you insult people they will be offensive! Back to the thread......For me, it will go on for as long as myself, Ian & all our friends enjoy a good dance, in clothes that are ideal to dance in, (if you like to move) with really nice people, (who dress vintage & modern), at great venues that play in my opnion the right sort of music, i would like to hear a bit more Antellects & Deadbeats, but im working on that! If the scene did change to more of a modern music night, i would not be interested, & the impression im getting is that the modern scene is not very friendly, & all they seem to be interested in, is what other people are wearing (going by some of these threads), so there is plenty of so no thank you to that!. Debbie x p.s (This is for the usual suspects), If in every thread you need to put people down for the way they dress, maybe its because your bored & got nothing else better to do , go & get yourself a hobby & enjoy your life Hey guys and Girls we are all suppossed to be on the same side here. we all have our own likes and dislikes in music and in fashion and cars and partners and so on. it does not make any of us right or wrong, just makes us Different. I would not care if you all come in your Birthday suits on saturday to Monaco's. Ladies please take note of that request. I am into Music full stop. I love northern soul new or old, or i should say i love the music that they play at these venues. I say that because, and i hope i dont open a new can of worms here, some of it is as far from soul music as you can get. I dont just mean the stuff they play today but also some of the things at Wigan too. But hey its all good music that we all like. As to how long it will last, well that is anybody's guess really,Probably long after i have gone. Stu.ktf
Dave Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel the truth needs to be told. The real Northern Soul scene is gone, its actually been dead for nigh on 10 years. It all started when a group of the undead were brought back to life, their mission to create an exact image of a time long gone, reflecting the best 18 months of their life's, when they had been Soulies keeping the faith. 30 years later, the faith had mysteriously returned, having been lost in an old Addidas hold all under the stairs for all those years. They soon multiplied, bringing back many other lost souls into the family, marching uniformly to their nearest Working Mans club, they could march as it was never more than 15 minutes away from home. Their initial tactic was smothering those who had survived the barren years of the 80's and 90's with talc bombs and then finally suffocating the remaining survivors with their beer towels, holding up there new leader by the vest straps, spinning him around their heads and crowning them with the exact replica bootleg of Frank Wilson, celebrating by dancing long into the night, well until half past midnight anyway as that's the latest licence the club could get. Now all thats left is a Matrix type illusion of a Northern scene, with all these alien head quarters based around the country, with a high concentration in East Midlands alleged, there are a few pockets of revolutionaries carrying on, again allegedly as don't want them to be caught, rumour says you need to look for the horses in Wolverhampton (although be careful here, there are already aliens imitating the real thing on some weeks), the smell of old jazz cats in London, and the dodgiest toilets in Stoke, they are out there but they are in danger of being overrun/ It needs to be saved, someone is needed to lead the revolution again, where is your Neo, Is he (or she) among the few remaining survivors of the guerilla Northern Scene who retreated to far off places licking their wounds and caressing carefully their vinyl, but remember nothing is as it seems, the ones wearing the long leather coats this time are likely to be the baddies.............. I don't visit this site too often now because of the high level of moderation. Thus I have only just seen this post due to the recent resurrection of the thread. I have to say, belatedly Jock, this is one of the best posts on the site, and certainly one of your most humorous! Get out of the cellar and entertain us some more! Edited March 31, 2010 by Dave

whereismy record Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 My daughter is 6 years old & she loves dancing around the front room to northern, for her 18th she wants to go to a 100 club niter, so I think we have plenty of time left. My oldest daughter when 9 said she wanted to work in the Scottish Widows building in Edinburgh because it has water around it and she would go swimming at lunch time. She is now 24 and still never done it. She also liked soul music just like my youngest who is 5 but the ass has to fall out it at some point. Open here retirement homes for soulies. Food Fast food/ junk food. Exercise dancing to soul records (and still no cds or pressings). Medication a wee bit of go fast. Visits to seeside resort holiday camps where pensioners go and have weekenders (so we are nearly there).
Saxafone Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 (edited) If the attendance at last weekend's London Crossfire Nighter is any indication, we're clearly doomed, the end is nigh and the grim reaper is on his way The place was mobbed with annoyingly disrespectful teenage types, dressed in strange, non regulation uniform, many dancing in styles representing a direct contravention of the Soul Police Handbook. There was also widespread disregard for other elements of the aforementioned handbook (etiquette section) such as no drink on the dance floor, no pushing, shoving and orderly queuing at the bar at all times. The buggers were also seen to be openly smiling, laughing and generally having a fantastic time and loving the music. Many were also seen "pinching" flyers for the dozens of other soul events that were on display, heaven forbid they turn up at a soul night near you any time soon Taff p.s. Dazdakin Posted October 30, 2010 Posted October 30, 2010 To keep the scene on-going it got to get back to it's basic's and try to encourage & embrace the younger ones that are new to it. Is is not the togethernes, friendlieness & sharing our different levels of knowledge of the music we all embrace anymore. How many people have we all made friends with by brushing past each other and then spent hours getting to know them.Meeting people at Motorway,Bus & Railway stations and shooting the breeze with them, because we all could tell by just looking at each other that we were all part of a family that most would welcome with open arms, no matter what colour, creed or what part of the country you where from. To me it was like a tight knit community where we all looked out for each other with certain morales + standards to adhere to, yes there were some blacksheep [ is that politically correct ] amongst us and i'm sure we all knew a few, i suppose most of us would say they were lovable rougues, but to me it was a family that was spread the breadth and width of the country who where united in our love of the music. In my own mind i think part of the demise was caused by a Goverment who let all our manufacturing jobs go to the floor, industries like mining, mills, steel works to name a few ,these were the backbone of communties with local workermans clubs and estate pubs where lots of us would socialise with people of our own kind, all these have gone by the wayside and it seems it has lead to a selfish society where a attitude of f*k you jack i'm allright and b*llocks to the rest. Gone are the days where you new everybody in your street, i bet there's lot's now who don't even know there next door neighbour. a parallel to which you could say about the scene where most of us knew lots and lots of people who would unite together in times of need. The Scene in it's unity & togetherness as took a bit of a demise just like a our society.Me personally, i hold all these strong morales & values of the scene and society which i think go side by side but it seems a lot don't, and are'nt prepared to make the the sacrificies to make, wether the scene or country a better place to be part of. That's just my theory i suppose others have their own, i'm not spoiling for a argument. My two biggest gripes are about how we are all letting the MP'S keep putting their pensions up besides them all being indexed linked [ when ours are getting to the stage ware they are'nt worth a s*it ] and also the increase of energy prices after shutting all the Oilfields and British Coalfields [ and no i ain't a ex-miner ]The N U M warned the british public what would happen when all the coalfields and oil refineries were closed or sold off, that we would in time be paying a lot more for our energy resources and oh how that has come back to haunt us all. All in all it's up to us all to make sacraficies to make the scene and in my eyes the country a better place to be amongst. Thanks - that was a letter on behalf of the Monster Raving Loony Party. ffs! take it your not a tory lover then.........but then again the last bunch fooked it right up good and proper me thinks. gettin back to the question, the music will last forever as its here and thats that, the scene as we knew it has already gone, and the scene as it is today is kind of kicking and screaming its way to pastures new.......imho

Not really for me mate, I was going to House clubs in my 20s as well as Soul things. I find the idea of spending a Saturday night with ecstasy pills in my pocket under a railway bridge in south London in 2010 about as appealing as spending a weekend out of season in Spain with a load of old people. Memories are just nice things to have ! Keele, Bradfords queens hall, 100 club, happy jax, strawberry sundae, chunnel..... i could go on all night memories I like to travel to the Caribbean these days ! The all inclusive hotels are to die for ! Edited November 2, 2010 by mossy
