Byron Lee - Frankenstein / SOUL

I Love this record, its Ska right??? always been around this type of music but never really took that much of an interest that I might gain a taste of my own, if you know what I mean, anyhow this is the DOGS, and I must have one... There is a Dawn penn 45 also, sounds like a chicago soul record minus the backing, very very good..

what else is good by this guy, and anybody got one for sale??

Although Byron Lee was much respected as an artist and a producer, his records were never taken very seriously because he was "uptown" and played the rich resorts, in other words he didn't come out of the ghetto and therefore wasn't considered authentic enough. Frankenstein is a fantastic instrumental which is pretty untypical of lee as it sounds more like The Skatalites.

If you want to hear some soulful jamaican stuff, the rocksteady section on this forum contains gem after gem..

Yes if you search for the seller Enthucol on ebay, he'll have one - his name's Phil by the way.

That was it, Dawn Penn - Are you There, could almost be something like Amanda humphrey - power of Love..

almost.......

That's a rare single on UK Rio but again you should be able to get a repress (on Prince Buster label) both sides are dionne Warwick covers and are brilliant (Long Days Short Nights or vice versa is the B side)

Frankenstein is a killer alright I'll post it up on here if its not in the Refosoul section already. Others to check for are Slow Run (JAD) which I put on here sometime back, and Ska Doo Wah which is a Hammond thing which I think I sold some years ago. I think it came on UA over here. The price on an original Frankenstein on JA Soul is probably £50-60 nowadays for a VG+ but Phil Etgart at Enthucol can sort you a repress if youre not fussed

I'm now leaning towards an original press, on JA Soul right.. anybody? would you have a scan so i know what I'm looking at?

Thing that frightens me with Jamaican stuff is the quality and Variety of presses, I'm not referring to the crackles and badly pressed labels, that makes em feel right In my opinion, but there seems to be so many re issues, etc etc that I'm not sure whether I'm actually buying an original pressed 45, even when you get what you think is the right label, the quality gives you headaches as to whether is the real deal, its not like Bell sound / sheldon MR stamps that the yanks have..

all advice is gratefully accepted, I'm a neewbie at this..

Just buy the repress!

For instance - if you were to buy an original "blank", it's just a white label.

Remove the label from your repro and hey, instant blank!

The only difference is the matrix number and half the time they can't be read anyway.
