Brigid - it's Carol from Wolverhampton at the front left in this one (not me). I have written on the back of my copy as follows:

The Torch Sat 25th Nov 1972 L-R back row Keith (Hyde), Maurice (Worcs), Kenny (Preston), Chris (Mkt. Harborough), ?Chris (Preston), Clarke, Desi (Preston) standing at back, infront L-R Carol (Codsall, nr W'ton) & Rick (Grangham). You say it is Neal (Grantham) next to Chris (Mkt. H) - didn't have his name listed! Are you in touch with anyone from these photos?

Chris

Thanks for those Lorraine, Steve was a lovely guy.

Here is one I have posted before but for anyone who missed it, I took this photo at the Torch end of 71' maybe you can put names to the ones I have forgotten, made the mistake of not writing the names on the back at the time, only the date.

Names I do remember, left to right - Keith Shepherd (Hyde), Kenny (Preston), Guy at the front left Ric Tic (Grantham), girls behind and beside him Birmingham, guy in stripey jumper - Neal (Grantham), Dessi (Preston), Christine (Wolverhampton)

Swish from Leeds? I remember him! I have this photo too! It was taken in Stockport on Sunday, May 14th 1972. The girl in yellow sweater is Liz (Corby) and of course me Chris (Birmingham)!

Swish this is your fault, discovering your treasure trove of memorabilia has us all looking back through our archives hoping there might be something we missed before!

Anyway here is another piccie I've found. I think this was one Sunday morning after the Cats. Pictured is Brian Lear and Pete Tilsley (Stockport), Dave Preece and Christine (Wolverhampton) and again I just can't remember the name of the second girl but she was also from Wolvs. Not very often you saw Pete without his glove on!

Hi Brigid - Desi passed away some years ago. Have been in touch with Kenny (Preston) - he is still in Preston and Chris still goes to the northern soul nights! Not sure about Trevor (remember him? ).

Chris

p.s. how do you upload photos onto here? I have more!!

Glad the photos have evoked some memories ... any more out there? Does anyone know what ever happened to the Preston crew from that time? Thanks Steve, should have remembered that name!! Just had an e-mail to say Dave Preece is running Kareoke disco nights in a pub now, we should all turn up one night and suprise him

Heres a couple .

One from 1972 with Dave Thompson and Mick Eastwood along with Dave Godin and Irena from Barnsley at my house.

. Also one from 1979 with Matchy, Steve Goodison, Myself(Pete Dillon) and others. I think the blonde haired girl in the pic with Ann Froggatt is called Lesley from Wakefield way. She shared a house with Ann around the time of Cleethorpes..

Brigid, Tommy from Grantham was Tommy Moore. I'm sure I'd heard somewhere that he's passed on. Will try and find out more.

I'd say there were around half a dozen or so Grantham regulars around that time. Most into the music, scene and gear and a few just into the gear.

Apart from Rick Clarke and Tommy Moore there was --- Big Gez, Little Gez, Mick Stevens, Dave Owen, Johnny Adams and girlfriend Sherry (from Notts worked in HMV) Bri Mitchell -------- memories shite nowadays as I'm sure there were at least a couple of others. Mick Stevens and Johnny Adams are long gone.

..I was about to ask..does anyone remember Mick Stevens?..he was working in Skegness and was a regular in the Maple room where we played soul/motown on Sat nites.I remember his fateful trip to the Torch when he was killed in car on route.Ross (Nottingham) survived as did pixie Mick tho sadly never the same.We had an impromtu whip round for the funeral..i was only 16 or so..tragic..anyone have a photo of Mick..? He used to come in our clothing shop and buy his shoes..

Elvis, remember Mick Stevens quite well mate. Mick was 2 or 3 years older than me and Mick being the trend setter I occassionally accompanied him over to Leicester (Irishes) to stock up on Shermans, Sta-Prests, etc etc.

I missed the Torch by a few months, me and a couple of mates were set to go when it shut. Anyway my first "event" was Top Rank Hanley. Late one Friday night was outside the pub when Mick asked us bump Ross' motor followed by "D'ya wanna go Va-Vas". Needless to say we piled in, Andy capes, Steve Gutteridge and I.

Anyway, great night and came back to Grantham. Ross & Mick dropped us off. That following week my mum & dad were gonna be on holiday at Ingoldmells near Skeg and I was going to go over mid-week. Mick said to me "Come down the fairground I'll be on the Waltzers" I think it was the Waltzers he was working on but memory for small details is getting shite nowadays. That said, I went to the fairground midweek and asked for Mick. "He's dead mate, blah, blah, blah". I was stunned to find out that it was after Ross & Mick dropped us off that they had the smash, hit a bridge I think. Came home and went to his funeral.

A bit later the law knocked on the door and started asking questions re gear. Then the 3 of us got a subpoena to attend court. Turned out in the end we didn't have to appear (phew).

It deffo wasn't the Torch they were going to mate, as mentioned above Torch was closed by then. If I remember correctly they were on their way to Leeds.

in my minds eye I can still see Mick in a number of situations. Great lad and one of the Torchites that had time for us who were a few years younger and starting out on the soul/nighter road.

Coincidentally about 25 years later around 1998 I was in a charity shop when in the back room I saw a 50 record box. Opening it up I saw it was full of Northern and knew immediately it was Mick's box, bought the lot for a fiver. First thing I did getting the box back home was seeing if the gear was still in the bottom ... was it fook :wicked:

There must be some photos of him somewhere, anyone?

yep..its making more sense..this must've been the summer of 73..because Ross was seeing Marilyn from Mansfield (both working in Skeg) at that time ..because i went out with her from early '74..so rightly Torch was closed.Leeds central maybe..we all knew Pixie mick well, but i never asked him about the crash! and i think Ross went from bad to worse..i also met another guy from Grantham who knew Mick (at Skegness weekender) called Dave i think..(gary Wade intro'd us) was that you or someone else?

..terrible thought just occurred to me..there but for the grace...in '73 i really became aware of Northern soul..having gradually been collecting Motown and Soul 45's for a few years..i hadn't passed my test so was always trying to get a lift here and there (usually to Boston's Gliderdrome) i knew Mick had wheels but i didn't know him well enough to cadge a lift..of God go I...never thought about it before..heres weird thing..i can remember clearly Mick's outfit! usually wore white skinners with a navy blue wool long sleeve jumper with green collar..that he bought from us,,,can see it now..

No, not me mate. Can't think who else called Dave from Grantham would know him. Apart from Dave Owen who was living in Grantham at the time but can't imagine it would be him somehow. Dave Raistrick from Skegg knew him, any chance you've got wires crossed.

I can remember him in denim skinners, they looked great on him as he had the right build for 'em. I can also remember coming back from Leicester where he'd bought a new maroon Harrington, probably a year or so before I got into soul ie '71 ish. Anyway at a local village disco  a scrap started and someone got whacked. As he was falling back he grabbed what he could to stop himself landing on the deck. Unfortunately it was Mick's new Harrington that he was wearing at the time and he ripped it. Very vivid memory of Mick then hitting this same poor fooker, him landing in a chair whence Mick gave him a kick with his brogues which glances off this blokes chin and hit's the underneath of the fire extinquisher which came off it's bracket and fell on the blokes head  ... I kid you not, can still see it .

Ah, Dave Owen then. Dave used to live in Grantham and was a window cleaner. I used to borrow records off him to tape.

Think he's in Donny now, at least he was last time I spoke to him about 3 years ago.

Wasn't Dave Owen living in that flat on Infirmary Rd in Sheffield by then with Karen...he had the bottom flat and Dodger and Pauline had the middle one..I was knocking about with Judy S at the time and shortly afterwards Dodger moved back to Grantham cos' me and Judy used to go and stop with them
